  • you must be/been a nintendo employee lol

  • Amazing *.* Where do you get this Prototype Controllers from ?

  • The analog on that first controller looks much better than the normal 64 one.

  • 009 sound system has some major glitches, cuz IT SUCKS SO FRICKING BAD!!! other than that, the video is ok.

  • the black one looks the most comfortable actually. Is it just me that always found the stick on the n64 controller too small and your fingers would slip off?

  • Tactical mute inbound.

  • That's one sexy analog stick.

  • The size of the analog stick is better.

  • Joysticks.. all of them plastic.. throughout the entire lifespan of the console they never once thought this was a bad idea and release an improved controller.. And now I'm stuck with controllers with wobbly analog sticks. I actually went as far as to buy replacements and grease them up. That's another thing, for some reason Nintendo didn't lubricate the thing to prevent friction from ruining it. Maybe it's an FDA thing and maybe it's fine in Japan..

  • Best controller design ever....PERIOD

  • Cool, do they work with the retail n64?

  • How do I know that's just not an N64 Bootleg controller made by a Third Party Company?.

  • @TrapnestShinigami

Because this is the style of controller that was shown all around the magazines when the system was announced.

When the controller was unveiled, the joystick is the same one that was shown on the cover of Nintendo Power.

  • The Ultra 64 joystick looks better

  • Wow, that black one's joystick looks interesting. Have you taken it apart to see if the mechanisms inside the joystick were the same as the retail one?

  • The WMG shit they did isn't really a problem if there was no speech in the video, because you can just mute it and you aren't missing anything

  • i have the middle one X3

  • The black one is the cutest! Wish I could lay my hand on one of these controllers!

  • This may sound stupid, but by "Phone Type", do you mean like a phone jack?

  • Does the Proto Ultra 64 controller work on a Retail N64?

  • Well,i can see it IS a prototype since it has the place where the ultra 64 logo would have beenbut ya,how did you get your hands on one?

  • Do the joysticks wear out on these like the released pads?

  • @blowmeuptomleykis Yes. They are still the same plastic stalk on a plastic dish setup so eventually they will grind each other away.

  • Wasn't this supposed to be called the Ultra Famicom over in Japan?

  • Microsoft used copypasta

  • the anolog stick looked like it would work much better than the actual n64 controller

  • what is it with people uploading videos and using a shit generic audio track from a shit musical artist, god this has to stop. neat video tho how'd you get your hands on the proto?

  • @femix Copyright conflict. Youtube used to mute videos they thought infringed on copyrights. The end result was you had to use audioswap with the limited free selection of crappy music they provided, or have no sound at all. Now they just overlay obnoxious ads on the offending video and leave the music alone.

  • How did you get this stuff? Did you know someone or did you work for Nintendo?

  • honestly, I dont know why they went with the 3 prong system. When I first saw that in mags back then... I thought... wow very interesting. then I tried the thing at the blockbuster and zellers display and was sadly disappointed with the controller. I think they should have at least put the joystick on the left most prong since a lot (if not most) of the games do not give you the option to use the cross stick.

  • how did u get the ultra 64 controller?

  • man cool! where you get them?

  • i want to put my hands on the silver controller

  • didnt the gold one come in a bundle when ya first buy an n64 when they 1st came out?

  • dude awesome

  • This may sound strange, but is there a version of this with the original, non audioswapped audio?

It turned out that the original actually worked as a trigger for ASMR, but obviously the overlaid music eliminated the original audio...

  • I like the name N64 better because Ultra 64 make it too Sega-ish. same with that black and grey controller(very SEGA-style behavior).

  • Did you ever manage to get ahold of a SGI Indy Nintendo ‘Ultra64’ development system? There are some people on Nekochan.net who have them, including controllers and all the development software and libraries. One person even made a short, but very nice, video.

  • @eMGeeGFX Yep I have a few full setups.

  • @ASSEMblerEX, a few even? Including all development libraries and so on? Damn. (They're worth a lot on eBay and elsewhere.) You should make some videos about it! Did you also ever managed to get your hands on one of the even more rare SGI Onyx-based Nintendo ‘Ultra64’ development systems?

  • How did you get these?!

  • the worst and ugliest controller ever ^^

it was good, but not comfortable.

  • those are not prototypes i have those ones

  • This controller was the worst controller I have ever used. The analog stick was a much needed and long overdue innovation, but the controller was too difficult to hold. The obsolete D-pad was given prime real estate while the stick was built onto a redundant wing that was either too hard to reach or smashed both the hands together depending upon which wing you held. A 3rd party controller was a necessity on the N64. Thankfully ergonomics was rediscovered during the GCN's development.

  • @ScubaSteve1974 I know what you mean. The analog stick would wear out in a very short period of time and before you know it Link isn't moving on Zelda. Luckily you can find N64 controllers from companies like Yobo that work just as good as a gamecube controller.

  • @Valientlink I never noticed a problem with the reliability of the N64 controller, but I probably didn't use it very long since I snatched up the first ergonomically-built 3rd party controller that appeared on the market.

  • @ScubaSteve1974 I hate the Third party controllers... I personally think this is the best Controller ever made and as I was reading the comments saying the control stick would wear out fast is false. I still have mine since launch and that control stick is tight as ever. The N64 is a Unbeatable tank. Not even the 360, PS3 and Wii combined could beat such a system. The controller could be held in a conforable position where you can have your fingers on the D-pad and the buttons at the same time.

  • Is the gold one a real N64 controller? I didn't know they came in that color.

  • @SergeantLuke

about a year before they stopped making n64s they made them in diffrent colors

  • @SergeantLuke goldeneye special colour controllers : )

  • I'd say the black one's design wasn't lost really.

  • Thats probably very, very rare.

  • the ultra64 thats just what we know as the n64 right?

  • No its the next thang artard its coming out in 2011..... Riiiiiiiiiite Guyyyyys!

  • how much

  • can you PLEASE MAKE A SEQUEL TO THIS VIDEO!!!! I don't know about everyone else, but my life will never be the same, having watched this.

  • I have a pokemon game where you need to know what color buttons to press. If you had that you couldn't do that part if you've never seen a regular controller and you had that.

  • Well Ultra 64 was the prototype right? So this was made before the N64 release. So that game your talking about would have been made around the controller, since they added color to the controller before releasing it makes sense that that game used the colors instead.

  • The black look to be the best but it would have been better if the buttons were like the original.

But the stick looks wayyyyy better.

  • The black ones always look better in my view

  • i wish i could mod my N64 analog stick D:

  • i have a test cart for the n64 with a picture of that controller lol

  • what does the test cart do?

  • it test the memory the sound and graphics the colors and the ruble packs that includes the Exp paks and controllers

  • Why si it that Nintendo always teases us with something mega-cool and then dials it down to something that's fair. I mean Nintendo Ultra 64, Nintendo Dolphin, and Nintendo Revolution were all cool concepts but we got stuck with the N64, Gamecube, and Wii.

  • You bought this? Hero. God. Jesus. Zeus.

O_o xD Collector here! Two actually! Me and you!

  • The stick on the black controller looks uncomfortable.

  • Ew.

Lol the black controller looks like someone sucked the soul out of a regular nintendo 64 controller.

  • @IyoGata i agree

  • That black controller is pretty kick-ass. Wish I had one.... or four. Too bad that the little face piece is missing.

  • Wow i want these beta's for collectors purposes... Mmm. I wonder how much they would get on ebay? I wouldnt sell them if i had them though, this shit is pricless. :)

  • the analogue stick looks much better on the black prototype than on the finished n64! The analougue stick was good untill the ps1 got dual shock. The strange thing is the prototype looks like it uses the new style analogue stick rather than the weird nintendo on, why did they change it!?

  • Ï want a balck one

  • Which is the best one? On your website the final controler have an bigger wearout than the other two. Which have the best controll?

  • Comment removed

  • no its not, the very first images of the U64 showed this black controller with the concave analog stick.

    google images it.

then at shoshinkai in 95 the controller was grey with circular imprints on the analog stick (the second controller shown here)

    they are legit.

  • prototype controller looks almost like a moded ps3 controller

  • i dont think this is an ULTRA prototype. All it seemingly lacks is colors....

  • I always held the entire controller and it felt comfortable. i could never do the middle one, just felt awkward. that being said i love how sony and xbox fans always bash nintendo controllers when the sony and xbox are always incorporating nintendo ideas into theirs. nintendo had the analog joystick first, same with the rear trigger button(minus sony on that one) and motion control. seems like nintendo sets the bar and everyone follows like sheep

  • Technically, Atari created the 360 pressure sensitive joystick with they're 5200 console, but Nintendo was the 1st to actually perfect it.

  • Close but no cigar.

  • Hmm? What do you mean? The Atari 2600 had a joystick controller, sure, but it wasn't actually pressure sensitive, so it was basically a D-pad with a giant stick attached to it.

If that's not what you were talking about, elaborate plz.

  • AGREE.

  • the black is mebey beter than the witte

  • where did u get these

  • why do people complain about how HORRIBUHLLLLLL the controller is, when it seems most people actually didn't have a problem with it, myself included?

Plus, you're not supposed to use the entire goddamn controller all the time.

  • I know the only part of the controller you should be holding is the middle section (control stick and Z with your left hand) and the right hand covers all the c buttons and the B+A buttons as well. and people wonder why thier control sticks break easily if ywould just hold it the right way there would be no prob

  • @TheCheezWizz Yeah, I've never played an n64 before, but the controller actually looks like it would work quite well.

  • @TheCheezWizz

    i thourght it was great

the joystick coulda been abit easier on the fingers tho

i have permanent scars from holding forward while playing zelda on it haha

  • @Rusty2540 Ouch; that's got to hurt from the scar(s)...

  • @TheCheezWizz ikr? But i HATE the analog sticks!

  • @TheCheezWizz

I remember the D-pad being stiff and overall quite shitty, but the rest was good. And at least the D-pad was better than the Xbox one. I can't play Streetfighter on 360 :(

  • @TheCheezWizz

Tell me about it. I never heard anyone complain about it back in the 64's time.

  • lol... glad somebody can agree w/ me... and without giving me a 'thumbs down' reguardless of all the 'imo's and 'no offences' in my comment..

and yeah, mario64 was unplayable for me with that controller. at the time, i wanted a d-pad. imo EVERY game for that console that didnt utilize both the d-pad and the stick should of had the option to use either preference INCLUDING MARIO64... and sorry guys, theres a reason nintendo changed styles for the cube while sony maintains the duel shock design

  • i have to sort of agree, when i was a kid i really didnt like the controller and i didnt really know how to hold it properly sometimes, it just felt awkward to hold. it was one of the reasons i never like the 64- that being said, I used to love the ps3 controllers till recently when now it feels like my hands are too big for the controller...they need to make it bigger now i reakon

  • yeah, the odd thing is the controllers seemed to grow with me... started w/ the nes controller (smallest i can think of at the moment)... i grew a little, snes controller came out, larger controller... then gotta psx, more complex controller... etc... personally though i preferr the 360 controller... i was kinna 50/50 on the xbox1 controller 2 (not the gi-normous one but the refinned one) and the ps2 one...

  • ah I see yer i sort of get you there because when i was a kid the ps1 controller was perfect for my hands and so was the ps2 I guess now the ps3 controller is just too small for me haha at first i didnt like the 360 controller either but after playing for a bit it is a very good feel and it seems to mold to your hands rather than scrunging your fingers like you do with the ps3 Were there different xbox controllers? I thought they were all the same and the 360 was the same (save afew buttons)

  • the 360s 'bumper' buttons on the shoulders replaced the black and white buttons on the face of the origional xbox's controllers. the "xbox 1" had two different controllers... 'the duke' controller (from launch in america) that was pretty large, achward and got complaints. in japan's launch of the 'box, consoles came packaged instead with the 'controller s', which became the preference and replaced the 'duke'. If you never seen the duke, google-image it... lol i'd never grow into that beast...

  • @ebag10

idk the ps3 is like the best IMO,

the xbox 360 controller is good but its like if the dualshock 2 and the sega dreamcast controller had a baby... seriously

  • Comment removed

  • *the*shit... unless your comparing it to xbox360's controller... cuz microsoft's is the best yet

  • The second one looks a lot like ours. It was just gonna have a biggier D-pad and a bigger control stick.

  • I meant the second one was gonna have a smaller D-pad! ^-^'

  • i read somewhere that the ultra 64 controllers DIDN'T have a slot for a memory/rumble pak. am i just wrong or is this a model that was fairly close to the real release?

  • whoa, since when is there music in the video now? I downloaded a copy of this before there was the music and the 480p HQ (mine's in 360p). I wanted a version with the 480p resolution but with the original audio and not the music...

  • turn off your speakers?

  • @ASSEMblerEX Wow! you got these prototype Nintendo 64 controllers! I should've play Mario Kart 64 with that.

  • Black one looks pure awesome.

  • Look where you're pointing the camera next time.

  • I like the one in the center more

  • How you instal analogic of gamecube in nintendo 64 controler!!or other (if are possible)

  • lol why didn't you sell ill during back in the day :D

  • Would the Ultra 64 controller be compatible with a retail N64 system?

  • Yes you just need a converter since the end of the ultra controllers uses a phone jack.

  • Do a barrel roll!

  • Press A to shoot!

  • I have the second(light gray) and the third(golden), but the firts( the black one) looks like much better, and the analog stick of the n64 controlles is a shit...

  • How is the gray one compared to the final release? I mean does it feel better when playing games like Super Smash Bros.

  • playing SSB in my N64 it's a little hard because my controlles analog stick are a little "broken"

  • The gray one or the regular?

  • I don't know if I can say regular, but the analog stick of my joystick is a F@#$%¨...

  • The first one looks so much better.

  • Dude, your breathing scares me.

  • I have chronic asthma. It's a terrible disease.

  • those controllers suck major balls they dont last much specially with that shitty analog stick

  • cmon your black controller is a chinese copy of the originals dont be stupid just say the truth

  • how to tell its prototype controllers and not imported chinese $1 controllers? (i mean the black one)

  • wow nice Assembler has some of the cooles prototype stuff

  • COOL

  • Mann... How do you get that O.o???

  • the black one looks sooooo nice!

  • look like case mods for the n64 controllers....

  • No.... Do you not know a prototype when you see one?

  • dude put em on eBay.

  • One day I don't remember exactly but I saw the memory card extension (on N64 controller, not on the N64 machine) hackers connected a fake memory card which contained a virtual console game.

I know it's possible with miniaturization progress (see memor32 on PS2 to run backups) but my question is,does it exists?

Am I right or did I misundastood?

  • I guess it's real but there are much easier ways to play backup N64 games.

  • oh yes I remember! there were south americans took a N64 controller and connected directly on a tv screen, and they played NES just with a modified memory pack (with emulator and roms) put in a controller! I didn't see on web but I read it on a fanzine)

  • ummm no..... the easier way is actually a rom dumper called Z64.

  • ware did you get these?

  • A former employee at Nintendo.

  • do they work?

  • Apparently they do. You just need to convert the connectors as the prototype controllers use phone cords.

  • you should make a converter (a cord that at one end has a phone port and the other has a n64 plug) it probably wouldn't be very hard once you figure out what wire on the phone cord corresponds to which wire on the n64 plug.

  • ASSEMbler has the adapter.

  • Ugh, I wish the joysticks were thicker like in the prototypes. The damn N64 joysticks never re-center properly.

  • The Black one looks awesome

  • The jostick look better than the one in the final release controlers.

  • damn that black one looks cool! if only it still had the ultra 64 logo on it tho, that probably would've made it more valuable

  • i have to ask, how in the world did you get those?

  • Probably people who worked at Nintendo. Apparently over a hundred of these things were made.

  • will they actually work in the 64?

  • Yes but you need a converter for the type of controller slot.

  • I like the gold better than all of those, why didn't they make them that way? or did they...

  • They did. Can't remember for what games, though. I'm guessing Zelda.

  • cool where did you get these? and do they work in a normal n64?

  • he has a gamestop special made remote for a dollar xtra. I have that gold one, I don't even know why the gray one is special but i have it, a transparent one with shorter handles, and flat black one but still normal colored buttons. I also have an orange 360 remote, a white 360 remote, and a green wii remote and nunchuck, a white wiimote, two silver g-cube remotes, a silver g- cube remote thats shaped a ps1/2/3 remote, a black ps1 remote with pinky grips, and turbo for rappid fire and cheatin

  • How the fuck did you get those? Are you the Nintendo 64? You sneaky bastard, you.

  • I was wondering the exact same, id like to have them ^^

  • I think I have a theory. This GUY is actually a Nintendo 64 disguised as a person.

    Sneaky bastards.

  • where did you get those??

  • Want. That black one is smexy.

  • +1

    Me wants too

  • how did u get those in the first place?

  • They never even completed the actual n64 controllers. This was quoted by miamoto in an interview about either super mario 64 or star fox 64. I cant remember. But these must have been way earlier. After all, the final disign was released the same day the 64 had its first trailer.

  • I think the prototype joysticks may have been more comfortable. And do they work to play games?

  • The analogue stick on the black controller looks like it would probably have lasted longer than the ones in the final release controllers. Nintendo hit the nail on the head with the Gamecube controller, probably the most ergonomically designed controller I've ever used.

  • what happened with the ultra 64 logo???

  • Oh, would you look at that! I would like to buy one if I had the chance.

  • what's a ultra 64?

  • Ultra 64 was the beta testing realease of the Nintendo 64

  • exactly!
