Love deserves the bashing. If it weren't for his "don't fuck with the formula" attitude, we might've had SMiLE back in '67. I personally don't like him because of how he took control of the group's live shows from Carl in the mid-70s and turned a rocking, soulful, innovative group into a corny golden oldies act. The whole "America's Band" thing is an embarrassment to the Beach Boys legacy. Long live Brian, Al, Dave, Blondie, and Ricky. RIP Carl and Dennis.Go see Brian live instead of this joke.
Yeah I know what you mean. BUT SMiLE would have tanked just like Friends, Smiley Smile, 20/20, MIU, Keepin' the Summer ALive, Carl and the Passions ' so tough and others. It was not commercial music, IT was Brian's music and I am glad it was eventually done by Brian and his wonderful band, It's ca;;ed the Music BUSINESS for a reason
I love Brian. Always have, always will. However, I think it's just plain childish and dumb the way you guys put down Mike all the time. And this "golden oldies stuff"? What are they supposed to be singing? They sing the classics we all want to hear. As for "Smile", we got it eventually, didn't we?
Yes, and no. SMiLE '04 will never be what SMiLE '67 could have been. While it's nice to have a finished version, the new recordings don't do the material justice. The songs sound sooo much better with Carl, Dennis, Al, Mike, and a much much younger Brian singing them.
another example of the rather poor quality of many of the beach boys' live performances. thanks god that they did much more better studio recordings :D
Cool song! By the Musical God named BRIAN WILSON!!!! Too bad Mike Love now inisists he is the Beach Boys and continues to go around singing Wilsons songs... Now that Carl and Dennis Wilson are dead. He can sing them all and claim he co-wrote it, hahaha what a joke! What a good strategy. What a "talented" person.
I am a huge Brian Wilson fan. But he did not write this particular song. Mike Love did. This was a rare thing for the Beach Boys obviously in that it was a #1 hit that Brian didn't even sing on. As far as the other Beach Boys the one that had the most writing talent other than Brian was Dennis. But after Dennis I would say Mike comes in 3rd as far as writing is concerned.
John Phillips was a cowriter of the song that is true. It was a joint effort between John Phillips, Scott McKenzie, Mike Love and Terry Melcher. Brian Wilson is the undisputed genius of the band. Dennis was somewhat of a genius too but noone compares to Brian. That is part of Mike's problem. He has made significant contributions to the band... albeit with some less than admirable contributions too. But he did help lyrically on some of Brian's best work.
Actually, I would place Carl, Al, Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar, and Dave Marks in a tie at third, Bruce in fourth, and Mike in dead last. Check out the Summer in Paradise album, if you still like Mike after you've heard it, then you have a kinder heart than I.
I Have purchased every single , LP and CD since 1961, have actually sung on stage with them 9 times, have attended over 100 BB concerts and STILL I place Summer In Paradise as one of their top recordings. Carl's voice is 'spot on'. Everybody's is. The harmonies are flawless.Mike has been given too hard a time by some, including me. Lusten to MIU if you wanna hear a lame LP. John Hunter Phillips
Summer in Paradise is crap. The only Beach Boy to play on the album was Bruce Johnston. It was a pathetic and emberrassing album for the Beach Boys. At least the MIU album had a hit with Come Go With Me that reached #18!
The concept of SIP was to try and make the equivalent of the first BB LP, but do it with digital recording. I LOVE the LIVE version of SIP. I also love Lahaina Aloha. The clarity of the album is so vastly superior to MIU. MIU sounds like a bunch of old men , which is also what Bruce Johnston said. SIP harmonies are 'spot on', whether you like thsongs or not. and Carl's voice make it worth the listening alone
Yes the ML bashing is childish. I have been guilty of it at times too, but mostly because I don't like him using the name 'The Beach Boys'. It's a tribute group ... a very good one, but still a tribute group
a prime example of why I have to constantly defend PET SOUNDS as NOT being the BEACH BOYS most people know of, this is like a KARAOKE open mic at a wedding reception.
Pet Sounds, recorded in 1966, was mainly Brian Wilson Brian wrote all of the songs. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was sung by Al, "God Only Knows" was sung by Carl. Mike at first didn't like Pet Sounds. He said, "Don't *&%# with the formula." After Carl Wilson passed Feb.6,1998, Al left the Beach Boys, Brian, today has his own band and only Mike is left from the original 1961 Beach Boys. After 45 years of touring(the Beach Boys use to tour every single DAY for weeks at a time) his voice is shot.
The Beach Boys needs more Beach Boys in the band. Get Al back. Get David Marks back. Get down on your knees and get Brian back. This is ridiculous.

Mike was the base of the 5 point harmony which the beach boys are very well known for he just needed to stay in his range is all.
