Who else but the incomparable Ennio Morricone could paint a better picture with music of the American Civil War, with such distinctives sounds? The conversing bugles at the end of this track is pure magic! What a composer!! His brilliant scores have had me praising this genius musician since September 1968, when I first heard his unique music in "A Fistful Of Dollars". Ennio is the best.
This is from a deleted scene from the film, and it is a amazing that it was cut, since it brings the emotion of the aftermath of battle. You can almost smell the smoke of the burning debris as Angel Eyes prowls through the fort looking for information on Carson's whereabouts.
@Chompobar He quite probably IS stupid. Either that or some worthless weasel who just did it out of spite. Seems to happen a lot whenever there's a huge number of "likes".
What complete knob pressed the dislike button? Someone was obviously castrated as a child and never knew that liking a touching song CAN be considered masculine.
If this track don't put you right in the middle of that conflict, nothing will. Again, another distinctive trait from Ennio - The masterful arrangement of a conversation between two trumpets, as heard elsewhere in this movie but in different styles. What a musician!! What inventiveness!! These are the right sounds to portray the American Civil War.
This scene is to me, the most telling scene in the movie, and it's absolutely stunning that it was cut. It takes Angel Eyes from a two dimensional "bad guy" into a character just as human as anyone else in the film. Which is more fitting of the theme than having him be just some walking evil guy.
no more evil than at least Tuco, who raped, murdered, and stole from who knows how many people
even Blondie could be considered evil, it was only by luck that Tuco didnt die horribly in the desert after what he did to him, he also murdered those bounty hunters in the beginning in cold blood, just to falsely turn a rapist/murderer, only to shoot him down from the gallows and run off with the money
true but whether he did rape isn't a fact. It was a charge.... what tuco does when we see him is largely based on greed and although he isn't an angel he isn't evil. he doesn't kill for the fun of it like angel eyes or get fun from sadistic nature or from torture.
It wouldnt be right to cast a perfect character in that climate. As tuco said "if one did not want to die of poverty"
he is like he is through necessity, not through choice.
Angel Eyes comes across a smoking, defeated Confederate fort and finds many wounded soldiers. An officer greets him and comically offers him some grub. Angel Eyes hands him a bottle of booze, and asks him of the whereabouts of Bill Carson. It is then that he receives word on the fort where he may be prisoner. This does fill in a minor plot hole.
@dan8585 well he was definetly evil, no question. he just sees all the wreckage around him and understands it, but i dont think he was that much sympathetic really. we're talking about a guy who kills the father of a family along with the son, and an old sick guy, and beats a woman unti shes bleeding.
One of the best music ever.

there are no good guys in this film. The only one who comes closest is clint. But thats because of the way the characters portrayed in the film.

I love this song :)
Isn't it played though in the scene where the commander is dying and the bridge is blown up by Tuco and Blondie?
salvasirignano 2 years ago
@salvasirignano Yes, it's also heard a few other times as well.
Such as:
When Angel eyes walks through a small Confederate Camp.
When Tuco and Blondie see Bill Carson in the Hospital Wagon.
