For Tenor players, I like what everyone says, plus, Joshua Redmond, most of the tenor players on Mingus albums, ditto Carla Bley albums like Tropic Appetites, Music Mechanique, Social Studies. On The Best of Charlie Parker I really like Lucky Thompson's solo on A Night in Tunisia. James Carter is fantastic too. He plays a lot of different sizes, notably Bass Sax.
Lucky to find this song....Ten years ago, someone gave me this aIbum, and I heard it just for once. Then my classmate borrowed the album out and never gave it back ...
I can't even remember the album's name! Now I can buy it back again....thanks for your publicing^^
Well, rather than albums, mind if I recommend some artists? While saxman was correct in recommending Cannonball as an excellent saxophonist, he happens to play alto rather than tenor. That being said, I would look into: John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson for starters. Good luck with your sax playing!
P.S. Sorry for the late response, I've not checked comments in a while
@jojokimbo Also check out Warne Marsh, Paul Gonsalez and Lenny Popkin! And there's some great free jazz tenor players like Albert Ayler and Evan Parker. Many people hate their playing, but who knows, maybe you won't...
Listen to as many saxophonists as you can, regardless of which one they play. My listening list would include Cannonball, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Parker, Phil Woods, Coltrane on soprano, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman. As a sax player, I also listen to vocalists and try to emulate their phrasing.
I often see Dexter Gordon overlooked when it comes to saxophonists. Actually, he did a fine job on this song; it was on his Go! Album.

cannonball's solo on this is just pure, greasy, soulicious be-bop delight
The drum groove at :26 is just pure funk, and the fill at :33 leading into the head is oh so tasty

This solo of Cannonball's along with the one on Autumn Leaves (same album) are both considered among the best ever recorded in jazz.
They are regularly transcribed and analyzed as part of jazz education at the best music schools like Berklee.

Love for Sale is one my favorite compositions. It has an unusual form. Adderley blows through the changes as effortlessly as a knife slicing butter
