This is a rare film. Bob Burns drumming and Ed King actually playing lead on "Sweet Home Alabama"! I would give my left nut to here this lineup recorded in a studio setting. The lead by Ed is Awsome. Never heard or seen this before now.
If you go to Lynyrd Skynyrd-Sweet Home Alabama- 1977 by 92586tony you'll see this song in it's maturity. Steve Gaines was the difference . Thank you, Ed. If not for your leaving the band, we may have missed out on his Genius.
@BufordWoody I have to disagree as well. Love Steve Gaines too, but Ed King was the technical wiz in this band. I think King's solo(s) in Sweet Home were a notch or two above what came after him.
Great video. You never get to see these guys together. Ed Hill much of left soon after this performance. He played base, switched to guitar then left. thanks for posting.
This is one of the reasons my redneck family moved to Alabama. THE HEART OF DIXIE. We fly 2 rebel flags on house, shower curtain, bedspread and pillow shams. Thats not all. I love southern living.
@joshzelmer Ed left the band in 1975 - but he co-wrote a lot of their big songs and came up with the guitar parts. He's from California and had previously been in the Strawberry Alarm Clock ("Incense Pepper Mints") He tells a great story about how they wrote this song.
Hard to believe that chubby guy in the front, Ed King, only a couple of years earlier was in the Strawberry Alarm Clock of Incense and Peppermints fame.
watch the whole concert. This was filmed in Hamburg Germany 1974. It has become apparrent that the bitch who think she has rights to ronnies money cannot touch this one. The record companies will take the residuals, and ed king gets a paycheck every week. That is the american dream.
Lynyrd Skynyrd first and then participate Queen if you can see Freddie Mercury's piano and at the 3:37 you can see the drummer Roger Taylor or can also be seen on the 4:58
Absolutely great, My sons loved it too. He heard the Kid rock thing and I figured I better show him the real thing, man that is a great vidio of a great performance.
@bearing44 no he says my donuts god damn sir. i read a story where when recording ronnie brought donuts to the studio and went to the bathroom but when he came back all the donuts were gone and he was pissed. lol
around 3:00 ed king kinda wanders off there for a second-watch Ronnie at 313 he gives Ed the "stink eye" . TOO FUNNY, thanks to randy for catching that one
i was lucky enough to meet the swampers at muscle shoals sound in '98 Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, Jimmy Johnson..that was a trip, they were really humble cats
Great to finally see videos of Ed and Bob playing with um, love Steve's playing but I've always wanted to see live stuff from Skynyrd with Ed on guitar!!! Thank you soo much!
OMG!!. I never thought I would see a clear video of this. Brian & Mary Nash, god bless them, were kind to send me a free lower video quality VHS copy of this many years ago. Its great to see the sharpness especially Bob Burns and Ed King who got no face time on Free Bird The Move nor Old Grey Whistle Test
The first time I saw Skynyrd live was summer of 74' at Rich Stadium (now Ralph Wilson Stadium- where the Buffalo Bills Play)in Orchard Park NY. They started off the show which included The James Gang and Emerson Lake and Palmer. It was the first concert that I ever went to and I had never heard of Skynyrd before. They stole the show and I became an instant fan. I can't believe it was 35 tears ago but their music is timeless.
You can hear a little CCR in the first "turning".. This is the same time period I started following the boys all over the state of Florida. I saw them at least 8-10 times..so many great shows.. I went to Ronnie's funeral..and that was a sad day. Thanks to folks like you, he lives on.
they are awesome. and thanks to all the fans like you said ronnie lives on and his music continues to thrive. yeah i also have been to many skynyrd concerts probaly been going since i was three years old. my whole family loves skynyrd. and i will have to say to me they are the best band. but that must have been a sad day to be at a funeral of such an amazing person. god bless Ronnie and the rest of the members that have passed away.
keep ronnie van zants music alive he lives forever in my heart its getting close to the october 20th the day we lost ronnie steve cassie n dean they were killed not for from where i live n i been blessed to have known ronnies family i miss him n the others that are gone now their memories live non forever in my heart
