  • ALL of this done on a single pedal. Using technical control that you wouldn't be able to imagine.

  • @PoloABD no.. he's definetly using a double pedal... just look at his hihat

  • @kevinyo4 Actually you can see his foot I concede. However this doesnt detract from the brilliance of the man.. in any way. In other words Joe bloggs with a double pedal is still Joe bloggs with a double pedal it isnt a 'shortcut' nor 'cheating' The majority of experienced players know this. Vinnie Colaiuta with a double pedal is drum nirvana.

  • @PoloABD Vinnie is a true master of the drumset. Man, I would kill to have his skills. One day, I will be there..

  • I think this guy can also handle modern metal, including Death Metal

  • @metalballs2010 vinnie recorded an album with megadeth, so yes he DOES know how to play metal.

  • muuuuuuuuuuuito bom!!!!

  • anybody who bashes vinnie is obviously jealous...how could anyone say this guy sucks?? its like saying carmen electra is fat and ugly..its not right!!!!

  • 100000 Zappas can't be wrong.

  • Hes definitly no lars but hes ok i guess.

    serious potential.

  • @dwilmer7 are you serious? haha :S

  • oh yea, travis barker is so much better than vinnie caloutia. Just trolling :} vinnie is probably one of the best drummers in the world! EVER!

  • @jamesdancer73

    Probably? I think DEFINITELY! :)

  • @jamesdancer73

I am not even a drummer but I could have stabbed you before realizing it's a joke...

  • anyone know in wich year was this concert??

  • Grande maestro, esempio di tecnica e personalità.

Per me è e rimane uno dei grandi a livello mondiale.

    ciko drummer Presezzo (BG) Italy

  • If you knock Vinnie = you are NOT a drummer..........period

  • Watch him with Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts jazz club on youtube.

  • @Winterstick549 Ive been listening to it for months now. floors me every time.

  • Check out the brand new official Steve Hass YOUTUBE channel. TheHassbeatDrumChannel! See you there!

    Sincerely,

    Mia Chambers

    The Web Assistant

  • All Tony Williams on this micro solo full 39 onward flamaddle flam taps flammacue all Tony with a ballzy samba feel

  • sound over everything else? thats just retarded. anyway, vinnie's sound is very professional not toy-ish. first person i see complaining about vinnie's SOUND.. wow. what's sound without musicality and chops? bonham had a big ass sound but he sounded really sloppy unlike my cousin Vinnie. i rather have a good (or toy-ish as that guy said)sound with good technique, musicality, chops, everything great drummers usually have.

  • Dumb question: Is a solo like this structured, or does he just sort of blow until he's finished? I'm watching Patitucci toward the end of the video, and it doesn't look like he's counting or keeping time. But I often see that, even during the most rhythmically deceptive drum solos, the rest of the band will simultaneously jump right in to the tune in a place that seems totally random. So do they wait for some kind of cue or something?

I just can't see an entire band counting through this.

  • "CIRCUS" DRUMMER ! ..... 1000 of tthese dont make one only like Elvin , Tony , Jack , etc. etc.

  • I can't believe someone said Vinnie lacks chops....

  • " Vinnie doesn't have the chops," Just stop right there. The day God made Vinnie he broke the mold of chops. Seriously, people, liking of disliking what someone does on an instrument is one thing, but saying Vinnie Colaiuta doesn't have the chops to keep up with someone is just a ridiculous statement.

After reading this I would actually rather get involved in some asinine Joey Jordison argument because the people that follow him are just beyond hope. I expect it from them...

  • @saintvituscrush- yes , a totally cool record, and Vinnie is

undeniably musical and virtuosic on it- as he is always

  • This guy is pretty good, but he's no Rikki Rockett or Peter Criss...

  • @SaintVitusCrush you must be joking right? peter criss or ricki rockett couldnt even dream of beiong able to accomplish what this man can do behind a set of drums

  • @rhythmninja0987 haha im pretty sure he was joking..

  • @rhythmninja0987 No... not joking at all. You can add Phil Rudd and the guy from Poco to that list as well. Colaiuta just doesn't have the chops to keep up with these guys...

No... actually I dig Vinnie's work on Gino Vannelli's Nightwalker, as well as his more fusion-oriented stuff. Neil Peart is my favorite drummer of all time, but my admiration of his work transcends just drumming (lyrics, his books, etc.). Chad Wackermann and Terry Bozzio are two another fucking monster musicians...

  • @SaintVitusCrush

Are you serious? Colaiuta is one of the twenty best drummers in the world. His ability and creativity have no limit (listen to Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar, Joe's Garage).

Anyway I love Neil Peart too, he's really really good. I think they are both masters. Love Wackerman and Bozzio too (Zappa's drummers).

  • @Informatisse Love me some Zappa.

I'm just trying to be a funny asshole. Either I completely fail at it or some people haven't caught the obvious joke (c'mon... Rikki Rockett? Peter Criss?!?!) :)

  • @SaintVitusCrush

Interesting how your favorite drummer of all time decided to take lessons from another jazz cat not mentioned: Mr Peter Erksine. Apparently, Mr Peart has respect enough for the genre to realize he could grow by bringing what it had to offer into his repertoire of skills.

FWIW, I've seen Rush multiple times. First time was Caress of Steel tour...

  • @JonP1961 Not only Peter Erksine, but Freddie Gruber as well. It takes a real love for what you do to realize that you can always be better, and to explore that avenue.

  • @SaintVitusCrush

And to recognize that by seeking out jazz musicians means taking it to the next level.

  • his ghost notes are unreal

  • @DyingSID666 they are crazy good. but i think benny greb still rules the world of ghost notes

  • That's a drummer!

  • check out this relatively obscure record, with absolutely brilliant and musical drumming by Vinnie-

    NightWalker by Gino Vanelli

    very cool!!!

he used to cut the grass,

he was a very nice boy!!!

  • @davelewitt yes yes... Nightwalker is a great one. My favorite song of all time is on that album; Put The Weight on My Shoulders....

  • whatever vin, like to see you try wipe out or iron man..

  • This kit sounds SO much better then the Gretsch he uses now .

  • @TheChiFlows

there was a point when yamaha had colaiuta, weckl and gadd signed, its just good buisness.

  • @TheChiFlows You know I am a drummer and a hard core Gretsch guy but I completely agree with you! His Gretsch should sound way better then they do but I hate the way he tunes them and somehow his tuning seemed to work better on his Yamahas. If you want to listen to my first track in my channel go for it, to me that is the way Gretsch are supposed to sound, I cant even figure out how he gets the tone that he gets out of them.

  • @Monsterdrumma its called all of his recordings are put through mixers and EQs

  • Still one of my favourite drum clips ever . Polyrhythmic 9s and 5s for the win and stuff.

  • decent drummer but i think that this solo is a bit bland

  • @Squishay1

Solo might not be your taste but calling Vinnie Colaiuta a "decent drummer" is like calling the Petronas Towers "kinda big buildings".

  • @decadyne or like saying Michael Jackson was kinda good at singing, dancing, and molelsting kids.

  • ive always thought that vinnie was a destroyer.

  • gay

  • @2222loko What is your fixation with homosexuality? You type it on all your posts. Please excuse yourself, idiot. Clearly, they're must other gay sites for you to drool over. Become a missing person.

  • @williamson609 ok?!!!! faggot!!!

  • @2222loko Like I said: Talking about the only thing you'll ever know, you stupid baboon. Learn from your parents' mistakes - use birth control!

  • @williamson609 sure faggot... do you look Michael Jackson too? i"d bet you do

  • Comment removed

  • @2222loko "I look Micheal Jackson too?" Jesus, idiot! You type like a two year old on Valium. Too bad stupidity isn't painful. Would you like a Tylenol, Dimwit? you know, we all spring from apes, but you obviously, didn't spring far enough.

  • @2222loko Oh Dear. Speak for yourself, Fudgepacker. Your posts are ranked with it. You could probably suck a tennis ball through a tennis racket.

  • Vinnie is simply the best. Amazing to have such fluency, energy, presence in time and independence - and creative humor! Put him alongside any other drummer and he WILL bury them :) I've been playing for 30 years myself and have nothing but awe for the sheer talent and work put down to get to this level.

  • @nortuber

Vinnie is one of the best out there , however to say he'd bury some of the more modern legends like Jojo Mayer and Steve Smith is a bit much. lol

  • All this waffle about Lars Vs Vinnie, Maybe some people are trying to label these drummers into categories. Lets talk about Vinnie Paul then, compared to Lars. R.I.P Dimebag

  • I had some dude mentioning Neil Peart the other day too..........Metal/Rock dudes will never get it. They are all percussion morons that think a double bass peddle makes you cool!

  • @JonnyCashmore but vinnie is using a double pedal to he-

    nevermind

  • @JonnyCashmore : Dude.. You totally don't get it.. In metal music double bass is esential. But there are great funk/jazz drummers that use double bass as well, and it is up to metal guys how to use it. Just singles till your ears start bleeding, or a step further and sound original. Don't think you know it all men

  • @JonnyCashmore

o_O But it does. It's blast beating that makes you sound like a fuck-tard hemorrhaging dead baby screams out of the speakers. Neil Peart is god, Dennis Chambers is god, and Justin Foley is god. Need I more proof?

  • lars is crap - And I'm a Metalicca fan - oops, did I spell that right ?

  • I remember when I thought Lars Ulrich was the best drummer, then my teacher played me the Buddy Rich Memorial 89' video...ahah, eye opener. Life was never the same.

  • @Croatch yeah i saw lars in detroit last year .check this out he was running at the side of the stage hitting fans hands when the song started it was prerecorded tracks then he ran and jummped in and started playing thats why drummers like jeff porcarro still fuckin rule.

  • @Croatch

I hear you man... for me it was "wild" Mick Brown from Dokken, then I heard "Spectrum" from Billy Cobham. Rocked my world!

  • YOu guys are hysterical. The comments are way more entertaining than any vid could ever be...

Vinnie's playing. Shut up and listen.

  • wow

  • how the hell does lars name come up on a vinnie vid??? 1 is a drummer and 1 is a musician.

  • Vinnie is a stud. A beast of a drummer.

  • Most of Lars's beats were absolutely pathetic until death magnetic. He was alright back in the day, but had some really good parts here and there. His drumming on reload and St Anger was pretty terrible though. Lars could probably a lot of Vinnies stuff since hes been playin for 30+ years but he doesnt have the knowledge to come with shit like that on his own I bet. Why am I even argueing with you, now that you think about it. Youre comparing a jazz drummer to a thrash metal/rock drummer, lmao.

  • Eh? Have you even the faintest who this guys is? I agree it definitely itsn't one of his most exciting solos, and Lars does do very well for the music...but Vinnie is...well, Vinnie Colaiuta! One of the most recorded guys in the history of drumming, played with everyone from Corea to Sting to the Buddy Rich Big Band. I think you need to think more about who he is to be fair....

  • and don't forget Frank Zappa my dear amigo!

  • Wow! In the shopping mall of the mind, you're in the toy department. I hope you weren't serious when you made that comment.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheEarlOfDublin I seriously hope this guy is a fake troll.

  • Geez platapus, Your lights are on, but nobody's home! Why did you delete your comment? No camera? Yeah right! Better starting practising Carl Palmer's "Tank" right away, idiot! Lol!

  • Un genio Vinnie...

  • What kind of an ignorant dick would say that Vinnie Colaiuta has no feel? It shows nothing but ignorance

  • overrated you gotta be kidding, watch him on the buddy rich memorial concert doing a solo and then talk.this guy creates some magical and original sounds on a kit.

  • your right! actually one of the best in the world!

  • man jeff (rrdrums) shut the fuck up. stop trolling drum videos you has been.

  • lol

  • Tony Williams smokes assclown here in every orifice. Always could did and Vinnie will never equal anything on Tony's level. So you can calm down about his mediocre drum sound.

  • Awesome talent

  • Colaiuta might be the best single pedal player ever

  • @Hheawy you do realize he's using a double pedal right?

  • the begginnning sounds a lot like the neil peart drum groove from 'freewill'

  • lmfao u being serious? vinnie is 1000000 times better than fallout boys drummer

  • @MrGreeva Not even 1000000000times.

he is just like comparing god and rock.

  • @MrGreeva

i think your going to need a bigger number..

a three year old is ATLEAST 10000000 times better than fallout boys drummer.

  • @MrGreeva check out the swedish drummer Morgan Ågren.

  • @MrGreeva Understatement of the century

  • Comment removed

  • I submit in my humble opinion as a drummer for 34 years that Vinnie is one of the Best!

  • Please do not mention that overblown obnoxious Carl Palmer in the same breath as Vinnie. It's disrespectful. Palmer's playing seems impressive when you are 11, but completely unlistenable by the time you reach puberty. Glad he's working in a Walmart or whatever he's doing these days. ELP could have really used a more solid foundation than THAT.

  • you are being a bit hard on old Carl . . but I agree with your statement. he's a showman . . a circus performer, who can flip his sticks and take of his shirt while doing a one footed drum roll . . i do think that he was perfect for ELP however. every 11 year olds favorite band.

  • PORCO DIOOOOOOOOO! Vinnie ma vaffanculo ti amo!!!

  • A lot of guys bagging Vinnie over his sound. There are things to consider: The engineer has influence over this; It's a video on youtube so sound quality is not the best. I play 2 yamaha 9000's too, one with deep toms one with small sizes like in this video. I believe you actually get a bigger sound from the small size toms-toms. I think too, that Vinnie wouldn't necessarily want his toms to ring out too long anyway because he plays so many fast fills. Vinnie is incredible overall IMHO.

  • I've seen Vinnie play live and his sound was out of this world, totally uncomparable to the sound of this very average video, so please don't base your opinion on that. I've never seen before or since any one who compares.

  • Comment removed

  • yeah man, just a really fucking overrated drummer. no feel whatsoever.

  • Oh really? Why don't you post it on youtube, so we can all witness this. Lol!

  • @platapush your a lying idiot

  • @platapush: No comment from you. That's what I though.........

  • Comment removed

  • You're clearly here for the attention because everyone here knows you don't have near the skill as you do opinion.

I've seen you knocking 5 or 6 other excellent drummers & yet there they are doing their thing for years so who are you comparing them to that makes you so qualified?

Sure guys like you like to compare up to the few who may be better, but you certainly do live vicariously through those few & nothing you yourself have accomplished, fact.

You're telling Vinnie what to do? LOLLLLL

  • The mistake guys like you make is that you think the world is supposed to cotton to your likes and dislikes, hence all the overbearing insults you sling as you accomplish nothing close to what these guys have.

Opinions are one thing, but you're the quintessential mediocrity seeking to maintain its current dignity hoping to stomp out excellence.

Good luck with that task because nothing changes for these awesome musicians as you rant. If I'm wrong, prove it...

  • @MuscleBound46 You just used big words on Youtube, now think about this... You are defending the honor of drummers, telling people that their opinion is wrong and their doing the very same to you, just like I'm doing right now. It's really cyclical and you don't need words with more than six syllables or have a doctorite in mechanics and grammar to know this.

  • Somehow it does not surprise me that you're here posting negative things about Vinnie again. You sure watch a lot of his clips for someone who loves to tear him apart. Odd........

  • how do you play that?!

  • hahaha john p. fixing his stugg

  • initiallly... winnie plaing gary cheffy??

  • how deep are toms14 and 16"?

  • he knows everything! the fuckin master!

  • .....and god!

  • Sounds sorta' like the stuff Morgan Agren does with the guitarist from Meshuggah.

  • dont........just...... dont...............

  • a bit over compressed... but, at least you can make out the drum tuning.... good player.....

  • I love so much the sound of his Recording Custom drum-set

  • He's really taken to those lessons I've given him.

  • lol

  • @DCussen LOL ;)

  • when Vinnie dies--he will be the best drummer that ever lived!!! untill then, I think you still have to give it to Buddy Rich---Mad props to Vinnie though!!!!!! GB5K

  • so glad he went t gretsch

  • im seeing everything in youtube upside down

  • Whoa, that's crazy! Are you standing on your head or what?! :-P

  • April Fools

  • Anyone know what patterns he's playing around 0:36?

    Thanks!

  • a hard pattern!

  • a shitload of rolls w accents. probs mite be an idea to master the single handed drumroll if ur gna attempt tht lol

  • He's playing a diddle pattern:

    [R] is on crash

    {L} is accent on snare

All other sticking is on snare:

[R]LRR{L}RLRLL[R]L repeat (all same note value)

  • I think he's playing sextuplets with kick accents and hitting the crash, the downbeat accent of the snare on every quarter note, kick in triplet feel accenting on 1e+, but he changes it rapidly. His double strokes are extremely accurate and powerful, amazing.

  • Good

  • Great Colaiuta...

  • i love expensive yamaha sets!

  • I love danny carey too but so different, if u want to hear him kill it listen to his other band VOLTO pretty good stuff

  • crasy...

  • Vinnie is beyond words.

  • watch Sting's "7 days" and hear vinnies groove on that song, that about sums it up!

  • amen

  • So, who has DC played with?

Look into VC's bio. DC is a nothing compared to.

What musicians are calling DC to be on their recordings?

  • who started comparing danny cary to vinnie? thats like saying neil peart is the best drummer in the world.

  • why won't this video play and show?

  • I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.-

More 'people' may know about Tool than they do VC, but more 'drummers' know about and respect VC than they do DC. DC is a nothing on the drum meter compared to VC.

I highly doubt DC can even read a drum chart and he sure as hell wouldn't be able to hang in Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock's drum chair, that would be laughable.

Peuknee, you need to listen to more VC, he was incredible even in the 70's

  • Vinnie is amazing but I'd dispute that Danny can't read charts. He played in his high school jazz band so surely he'd have to be able to. He's also a humble enough guy to probably admit that he wouldn't be able to do half the stuff Vinnie can. Still, he fucking rocks it and he's one of the most creative band drummers of all time.

  • i'm sure DC can read a chart, the guy is a real beast. He's done sessions and did a lot of classical study, and all of his drum study was in jazz. I suck ass at drums and i can read. He hits really hard, but there's no way you can be as fast and precise as him without having your technique together. I bet he could hang with Chick Corea or Herbie.....it's be different, but I bet either of those guys would dig it because they're both nuts.

  • Nothing exceptional here. If you want to see the best ever solo take a look at "Buddy Rich West Side Story solo". Leaves this for dead!

  • I love Weckl too, but you've got be joking about Vinnie not being creative.

  • Of course they can play DC material but it's the fact that DC came up with the unique sound on his own. He doesn't sound like every other jazz drummer that thinks fast snare rolls sound good. I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.

  • And I'll bet you're living under a rock.

  • look at generatrix999's comment.... Being more popular is no proof of being a better musician. Sure most people know The Beatles more than Chick Corea but whos better in terms of rhyhtm n harmony? just an example. Prog rock is complex, but Jazz Fusion is even more complex in both rhythm and harmony.

  • But at the same time, being more complex doesn't make it better either. Personally, I prefer the Beatles than Chick Corea, who cares if his musics is better in terms of rhythm and harmony? At least I don't.

  • Thats alright. Music(and just any type of art) is a matter of taste, right? you like what you like no matter what other think and that's okay as long as you enjoy it and as for me, complex is better and more enjoyable and... I like the Beatles too, and nobody has to care, im fine with my stuff.... peace(so you notice im not trying to fight here, lol)

  • I'd noticed, don't worry. I agree with you.

  • lol

  • actually you're right in a way, but Vinnie Colaiuta is known for having recorded for ashlee simpson, herbie hancock, even megadeth. Meaning, he can play absolutely anything. This is a particular solo he did during a show where "complex" is what the audience wanted to hear. I doubt he'd play the same thing at an Alejandro Sanz concert (he's this hugely popular spaniard ballad singer)

  • Of course not, so? Sorry, I couldn't get your point.

  • VC sounds like a machine gun. Always over plays the snare. DC has a much better modern sound that utilizes the whole kit better. It's all about style and I think DC has a much more distinctive sound. Unique!

  • Thats THIS particular solo. Carey is a good rock drummer...but he just isnt on Vinnie's level. Lets see him play Vinnie's type of material, and I'll give him props. Otherwise I havent heard him play anything like Vinnie.

  • They're both amazing musicians. But I think that even Carey would have to admit his chops aren't as mind boggling as Colaiuta's, and his discography isn't as impressive. Of course, I'm sure that Carey has a lick or technique or two that Colaiuta would like to incorporate into his repetoire. Watching either of them makes me want to practice...
