Vinnie Colaiuta with a double pedal is drum nirvana.
anybody who bashes vinnie is obviously jealous...how could anyone say this guy sucks?? its like saying carmen electra is fat and ugly..its not right!!!!
sound over everything else? thats just retarded. anyway, vinnie's sound is very professional not toy-ish. first person i see complaining about vinnie's SOUND.. wow. what's sound without musicality and chops? bonham had a big ass sound but he sounded really sloppy unlike my cousin Vinnie. i rather have a good (or toy-ish as that guy said)sound with good technique, musicality, chops, everything great drummers usually have.
Dumb question: Is a solo like this structured, or does he just sort of blow until he's finished? I'm watching Patitucci toward the end of the video, and it doesn't look like he's counting or keeping time. But I often see that, even during the most rhythmically deceptive drum solos, the rest of the band will simultaneously jump right in to the tune in a place that seems totally random. So do they wait for some kind of cue or something?
I just can't see an entire band counting through this.
" Vinnie doesn't have the chops," Just stop right there. The day God made Vinnie he broke the mold of chops. Seriously, people, liking of disliking what someone does on an instrument is one thing, but saying Vinnie Colaiuta doesn't have the chops to keep up with someone is just a ridiculous statement.
After reading this I would actually rather get involved in some asinine Joey Jordison argument because the people that follow him are just beyond hope. I expect it from them...

@rhythmninja0987 No... not joking at all. You can add Phil Rudd and the guy from Poco to that list as well. Colaiuta just doesn't have the chops to keep up with these guys...
No... actually I dig Vinnie's work on Gino Vannelli's Nightwalker, as well as his more fusion-oriented stuff. Neil Peart is my favorite drummer of all time, but my admiration of his work transcends just drumming (lyrics, his books, etc.). Chad Wackermann and Terry Bozzio are two another fucking monster musicians...
Are you serious? Colaiuta is one of the twenty best drummers in the world. His ability and creativity have no limit (listen to Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar, Joe's Garage).

Eh? Have you even the faintest who this guys is? I agree it definitely itsn't one of his most exciting solos, and Lars does do very well for the music...but Vinnie is...well, Vinnie Colaiuta! bullshit. Metallica sucks in comparison to Megadeth anyway. If you want to have any valid opinions on music you need to get off of that metal shit. Most of it is garbage.
Geez platapus, Your lights are on, but nobody's home! Why did you delete your comment? No camera? Yeah right! Better starting practising Carl Palmer's "Tank" right away, idiot! Lol!
overrated you gotta be kidding, watch him on the buddy rich memorial concert doing a solo and then talk.this guy creates some magical and original sounds on a kit.
Tony Williams smokes assclown here in every orifice. Always could did and Vinnie will never equal anything on Tony's level. So you can calm down about his mediocre drum sound.
Please do not mention that overblown obnoxious Carl Palmer in the same breath as Vinnie. It's disrespectful. Palmer's playing seems impressive when you are 11, but completely unlistenable by the time you reach puberty. Glad he's working in a Walmart or whatever he's doing these days. ELP could have really used a more solid foundation than THAT.
you are being a bit hard on old Carl . . but I agree with your statement. he's a showman . . a circus performer, who can flip his sticks and take of his shirt while doing a one footed drum roll . . i do think that he was perfect for ELP however. every 11 year olds favorite band.
A lot of guys bagging Vinnie over his sound. There are things to consider: The engineer has influence over this; It's a video on youtube so sound quality is not the best. I play 2 yamaha 9000's too, one with deep toms one with small sizes like in this video. I believe you actually get a bigger sound from the small size toms-toms. I think too, that Vinnie wouldn't necessarily want his toms to ring out too long anyway because he plays so many fast fills. Vinnie is incredible overall IMHO.

You see ...There are others tha know what makes a good drummer in nthe bottom line. Sound Guitarguy1000.Good job. What else matters more than that big sound? The sound that upsets a nervous system into a visceral creature. That sound that is immrdiately soothing and attractive but oh so threatening all at once.Toy drummers just can't do that. That's what bugs me about Vinnie. His toyness. I've seen him live w/Sting and I had the same complaint. 140 lb Mitch Mitchell had the sound. Not Vinnie

"Vinnie frustrates me cause he has all the stuff except is sounds miniature."
Totally agree. I've watched 30 vids of this guy and I don't get it?? I never hear his toms, or, it's just snare and cymbals. I'd take Gary Novak, Chambers, Sean Rickman, Simon Philips ( what a sound ) over this guy any day.
Sound counts. I don't care about limb independence, I like SOUND....and this guys sound is just okay to me.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is clear that I actually stated that Vinnie had all the things great drummers have except the big sound. You apparently have never heard Buddy live or Carl Palmer or John Bonham or anybody that drums larger than life. Once you see and feel that power there is nothing else to aspire to unless you want to simply be a groovemaster. Vinnie frustrates me cause he has all the stuff except is sounds miniature. That has nothing to do w/anythinbg except my observation trhrough impeccable ears.
I've seen Vinnie play live and his sound was out of this world, totally uncomparable to the sound of this very average video, so please don't base your opinion on that. I've never seen before or since any one who compares.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For a great drummer his drum set choice and sound is so amatuerish. This drum set sounds like a little toy set except for the snare. Dude get some bigger shells and some sticks w/wood on them. what? you don't have the arm and wrist strength to make big pop? Are you related to Porcaro or something? Oh no Gadd? No you're too fast to be a Gadd. Carl Palmers anemic cousin? No, not enough Buddy in you. Oh you're just you. Great chops , meter and creativity packed in a go kart size body?OK
You're clearly here for the attention because everyone here knows you don't have near the skill as you do opinion.
I've seen you knocking 5 or 6 other excellent drummers & yet there they are doing their thing for years so who are you comparing them to that makes you so qualified?
Sure guys like you like to compare up to the few who may be better, but you certainly do live vicariously through those few & nothing you yourself have accomplished, fact.
The mistake guys like you make is that you think the world is supposed to cotton to your likes and dislikes, hence all the overbearing insults you sling as you accomplish nothing close to what these guys have.
Opinions are one thing, but you're the quintessential mediocrity seeking to maintain its current dignity hoping to stomp out excellence.
Good luck with that task because nothing changes for these awesome musicians as you rant. If I'm wrong, prove it...
@MuscleBound46 You just used big words on Youtube, now think about this... You are defending the honor of drummers, telling people that their opinion is wrong and their doing the very same to you, just like I'm doing right now. It's really cyclical and you don't need words with more than six syllables or have a doctorite in mechanics and grammar to know this.
Somehow it does not surprise me that you're here posting negative things about Vinnie again. You sure watch a lot of his clips for someone who loves to tear him apart. Odd........
when Vinnie dies--he will be the best drummer that ever lived!!! untill then, I think you still have to give it to Buddy Rich---Mad props to Vinnie though!!!!!! GB5K
I think he's playing sextuplets with kick accents and hitting the crash, the downbeat accent of the snare on every quarter note, kick in triplet feel accenting on 1e+, but he changes it rapidly. His double strokes are extremely accurate and powerful, amazing.
I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.-
More 'people' may know about Tool than they do VC, but more 'drummers' know about and respect VC than they do DC. DC is a nothing on the drum meter compared to VC.
I highly doubt DC can even read a drum chart and he sure as hell wouldn't be able to hang in Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock's drum chair, that would be laughable.
Peuknee, you need to listen to more VC, he was incredible even in the 70's
Vinnie is amazing but I'd dispute that Danny can't read charts. He played in his high school jazz band so surely he'd have to be able to. He's also a humble enough guy to probably admit that he wouldn't be able to do half the stuff Vinnie can. Still, he fucking rocks it and he's one of the most creative band drummers of all time.
i'm sure DC can read a chart, the guy is a real beast. He's done sessions and did a lot of classical study, and all of his drum study was in jazz. I suck ass at drums and i can read. He hits really hard, but there's no way you can be as fast and precise as him without having your technique together. I bet he could hang with Chick Corea or Herbie.....it's be different, but I bet either of those guys would dig it because they're both nuts.
Of course they can play DC material but it's the fact that DC came up with the unique sound on his own. He doesn't sound like every other jazz drummer that thinks fast snare rolls sound good. I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.
look at generatrix999's comment.... Being more popular is no proof of being a better musician. Sure most people know The Beatles more than Chick Corea but whos better in terms of rhyhtm n harmony? just an example. Prog rock is complex, but Jazz Fusion is even more complex in both rhythm and harmony.
But at the same time, being more complex doesn't make it better either. Personally, I prefer the Beatles than Chick Corea, who cares if his musics is better in terms of rhythm and harmony? At least I don't.
Thats alright. Music(and just any type of art) is a matter of taste, right? you like what you like no matter what other think and that's okay as long as you enjoy it and as for me, complex is better and more enjoyable and... I like the Beatles too, and nobody has to care, im fine with my stuff.... peace(so you notice im not trying to fight here, lol)
actually you're right in a way, but Vinnie Colaiuta is known for having recorded for ashlee simpson, herbie hancock, even megadeth. Meaning, he can play absolutely anything. This is a particular solo he did during a show where "complex" is what the audience wanted to hear. I doubt he'd play the same thing at an Alejandro Sanz concert (he's this hugely popular spaniard ballad singer)
VC sounds like a machine gun. Always over plays the snare. DC has a much better modern sound that utilizes the whole kit better. It's all about style and I think DC has a much more distinctive sound. Unique!
Thats THIS particular solo. Carey is a good rock drummer...but he just isnt on Vinnie's level. Lets see him play Vinnie's type of material, and I'll give him props. Otherwise I havent heard him play anything like Vinnie.
They're both amazing musicians. But I think that even Carey would have to admit his chops aren't as mind boggling as Colaiuta's, and his discography isn't as impressive. Of course, I'm sure that Carey has a lick or technique or two that Colaiuta would like to incorporate into his repetoire. Watching either of them makes me want to practice...

bullshit. Metallica sucks in comparison to Megadeth anyway. If you want to have any valid opinions on music you need to get off of that metal shit. Most of it is garbage.

I submit in my humble opinion as a drummer for 34 years that Vinnie is one of the Best!
CelticSong 2 years ago
Please do not mention that overblown obnoxious Carl Palmer in the same breath as Vinnie. It's disrespectful. Palmer's playing seems impressive when you are 11, but completely unlistenable by the time you reach puberty. Glad he's working in a Walmart or whatever he's doing these days. ELP could have really used a more solid foundation than THAT.
stravinsky1970 2 years ago 2
you are being a bit hard on old Carl . . but I agree with your statement. he's a showman . . a circus performer, who can flip his sticks and take of his shirt while doing a one footed drum roll . . i do think that he was perfect for ELP however. every 11 year olds favorite band.

That has nothing to do w/anythinbg except my observation trhrough impeccable ears.
rrdrums110 2 years ago
I've seen Vinnie play live and his sound was out of this world, totally uncomparable to the sound of this very average video, so please don't base your opinion on that. I've never seen before or since any one who compares.

Great chops , meter and creativity packed in a go kart size body?OK
rrdrums110 2 years ago
You're clearly here for the attention because everyone here knows you don't have near the skill as you do opinion.
I've seen you knocking 5 or 6 other excellent drummers & yet there they are doing their thing for years so who are you comparing them to that makes you so qualified?
Sure guys like you like to compare up to the few who may be better, but you certainly do live vicariously through those few & nothing you yourself have accomplished, fact.
You're telling Vinnie what to do? LOLLLLL
MuscleBound46 2 years ago 6
The mistake guys like you make is that you think the world is supposed to cotton to your likes and dislikes, hence all the overbearing insults you sling as you accomplish nothing close to what these guys have.
Opinions are one thing, but you're the quintessential mediocrity seeking to maintain its current dignity hoping to stomp out excellence.
Good luck with that task because nothing changes for these awesome musicians as you rant. If I'm wrong, prove it...
MuscleBound46 2 years ago 14
@MuscleBound46 You just used big words on Youtube, now think about this... You are defending the honor of drummers, telling people that their opinion is wrong and their doing the very same to you, just like I'm doing right now. It's really cyclical and you don't need words with more than six syllables or have a doctorite in mechanics and grammar to know this.

a shitload of rolls w accents. probs mite be an idea to master the single handed drumroll if ur gna attempt tht lol
Flameboyance360 2 years ago
He's playing a diddle pattern:
[R] is on crash
{L} is accent on snare
All other sticking is on snare:
[R]LRR{L}RLRLL[R]L repeat (all same note value)
drumonit 2 years ago
I think he's playing sextuplets with kick accents and hitting the crash, the downbeat accent of the snare on every quarter note, kick in triplet feel accenting on 1e+, but he changes it rapidly. His double strokes are extremely accurate and powerful, amazing.

So, who has DC played with?
Look into VC's bio. DC is a nothing compared to.
What musicians are calling DC to be on their recordings?
generatrix999 3 years ago
who started comparing danny cary to vinnie? thats like saying neil peart is the best drummer in the world.
berkdrummer 3 years ago 3
why won't this video play and show?
12erb 3 years ago
I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.-
More 'people' may know about Tool than they do VC, but more 'drummers' know about and respect VC than they do DC. DC is a nothing on the drum meter compared to VC.
I highly doubt DC can even read a drum chart and he sure as hell wouldn't be able to hang in Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock's drum chair, that would be laughable.
Peuknee, you need to listen to more VC, he was incredible even in the 70's
generatrix999 3 years ago
Vinnie is amazing but I'd dispute that Danny can't read charts. He played in his high school jazz band so surely he'd have to be able to. He's also a humble enough guy to probably admit that he wouldn't be able to do half the stuff Vinnie can. Still, he fucking rocks it and he's one of the most creative band drummers of all time.
Benjomatic 3 years ago 2
i'm sure DC can read a chart, the guy is a real beast. He's done sessions and did a lot of classical study, and all of his drum study was in jazz. I suck ass at drums and i can read. He hits really hard, but there's no way you can be as fast and precise as him without having your technique together. I bet he could hang with Chick Corea or Herbie.....it's be different, but I bet either of those guys would dig it because they're both nuts.
ilovesolfege 3 years ago 2

carterito 3 years ago
I love Weckl too, but you've got be joking about Vinnie not being creative.
Ardent15 3 years ago 4
Of course they can play DC material but it's the fact that DC came up with the unique sound on his own. He doesn't sound like every other jazz drummer that thinks fast snare rolls sound good. I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.
peuknee 3 years ago
And I'll bet you're living under a rock.
jerrywitaj 3 years ago 3
look at generatrix999's comment.... Being more popular is no proof of being a better musician. Sure most people know The Beatles more than Chick Corea but whos better in terms of rhyhtm n harmony? just an example. Prog rock is complex, but Jazz Fusion is even more complex in both rhythm and harmony.
juanbarros88 3 years ago
But at the same time, being more complex doesn't make it better either. Personally, I prefer the Beatles than Chick Corea, who cares if his musics is better in terms of rhythm and harmony? At least I don't.
nicodelaguila90 3 years ago
Thats alright. Music(and just any type of art) is a matter of taste, right? you like what you like no matter what other think and that's okay as long as you enjoy it and as for me, complex is better and more enjoyable and... I like the Beatles too, and nobody has to care, im fine with my stuff.... peace(so you notice im not trying to fight here, lol)
juanbarros88 3 years ago
I'd noticed, don't worry. I agree with you.
nicodelaguila90 3 years ago
lol
juanbarros88 3 years ago
actually you're right in a way, but Vinnie Colaiuta is known for having recorded for ashlee simpson, herbie hancock, even megadeth. Meaning, he can play absolutely anything. This is a particular solo he did during a show where "complex" is what the audience wanted to hear. I doubt he'd play the same thing at an Alejandro Sanz concert (he's this hugely popular spaniard ballad singer)
ibangstuff 3 years ago
Of course not, so? Sorry, I couldn't get your point.
nicodelaguila90 3 years ago
VC sounds like a machine gun. Always over plays the snare. DC has a much better modern sound that utilizes the whole kit better. It's all about style and I think DC has a much more distinctive sound. Unique!
peuknee 3 years ago
Thats THIS particular solo. Carey is a good rock drummer...but he just isnt on Vinnie's level. Lets see him play Vinnie's type of material, and I'll give him props. Otherwise I havent heard him play anything like Vinnie.
jerrywitaj 3 years ago 4
They're both amazing musicians. But I think that even Carey would have to admit his chops aren't as mind boggling as Colaiuta's, and his discography isn't as impressive. Of course, I'm sure that Carey has a lick or technique or two that Colaiuta would like to incorporate into his repetoire. Watching either of them makes me want to practice...
