I feel really sorry for the people who find so much enjoyment criticising David. He has done so much to try to attract younger people to classical music but it seems some people want to keep it for the elite. What an arrogant and miserable lot they are!
This is quite good. The tempo is fresh like it has to be and the phrasing seems also logical to me. Only thing to criticise is his bowings, he use detachee instead of slurs. Anyway, it works!
Garrett is at THE VERBIER FESTIVAL performing and not you guys who keep criticizing him behind a computer screen, please stop being so childish and criticizing hes playing.
@unotelly so why are spending your time on watching him on you tube? Don't you have anything more interesting to do? Or you just love to be angry?"this Garret guy" - do you really think that being rude makes you more cool?. It's a waste of time. Find this X guy who doesn't annoy you to extreme and just listen to him
Both beauty and ugliness attract attention and stares... We find ourselves sometimes looking at something so ugly we cannot believe it exists, and while we are contemplating that, we stare at it. Youtube provides all kinds of experiences, from both sides. Plus, fame rests on controversy these days, not on substance. All of that (plus, some formidable technical skills, without a doubt!) contributes to the success of david garretts of the performing arts of today.
interpretation folks! if nothing changed, such as the way to look at a piece of 'classical music' how do we advance in any way! it is how he feels it, not how it was taught in some violin/music classes
He doesn't know how to phrase and shape this music... he seems to be a sincere musician but he seems to just play the notes without understanding how to build them into a piece of music which will lead your ear and your mind on an interesting journey. Most great musicians spend their lives learning and Mr. Garrett will always be compared with the good and the great of recorded violin history so he needs to up his game with this particular genre, and I hope he does.
@hugothebear Excellently said. It's not that he's a bad musician, it's a matter of his playing of this style of music. He will always be compared to the greats because that's how so many of us have become accustomed to these pieces. Also, it's not to say that innovation or interpretation are bad things (look at Kogan's rendition of this piece), it's HOW one interprets a piece.
im sorry but bach is really not meant to be played as some simple contemporary piece with no real thought, or depth. frankly, garrett killed this piece pretty nastily, and ran it over with his car about 1002349238423940293 times. you can tell from his face he doesnt really have the same feeling as perlman or julia fischers...
Complete trash. Here Garett can't interpetate this piece at all… totally tasteless. What is that trill in 1:36??? It makes no sense! Firstly I thought it's a mistake… that's not a boroque trill at all.
I've just listened to Julia Fischer's version on youtube - beside that, this seems pretty matter-of-fact. Even the way he starts it, hardly waiting until the applause is over, seems miscalculated - though to be fair he is fully in control technically, the tuning is pretty much spot-on and the sound is good. But this is a special piece, and he does not make it seem so.
I love the way he plays and I have seen him play this piece better then this, everyone has there days. I still think he is a very good violin player :) Thank you for posting it
They say THIS brings young people in contact with classical music. Id say, they should stick to pop and leave the classical music to boaring old ladys and gentlemen. But please leave BACH and all the others rest in peace. Even forget them, but dont do THIS to them.
Well he's certainly got talent and I think he is a very good violinist...but Bach is definitely not his thing. That's okay though, because Bach isn't most violinists thing anyways. :P
I actually like this piece, but of course how he rearranged it could not be appreciated by some people. The wonderful thing is that great artist like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and others created these wonderful pieces which, still nowadays, can be modernized and rearranged however someone likes...
@Pastisknowledge This is not rearranged at all, what he plays here is the original Bach score. And if you allow me, it's played like garbage. Nothing is right about this performance, this guy has absolutely no idea about baroque musical approach, intonation, sense of dance, phrasing, beauty of sound and most of all the very emotional meaning of this masterpiece.
@daniluzzu i think i must have mistaken the video! Because i copied this comment and instead of pasting it somewhere else i pasted here! sorry my mistake, i just checked the video and I too think this isn't really good.
not really sure why everyone hates this, maybe because I'm not sure what he's playing it from or based off of... it sounds nice if you have a genuine opinion rather than the idea of someone else's music in mind.
It's his own version and it doesn't matter that it doesn't sound like Bach. He didn't copy it, right? So don't be that stupid and tell that it's bad okey? He is a really good player. I Loved this version. <3 (i'm german sorry my english isn't that good :D)
its not easy to listen to each single note. great interpretation. no matter what you say - imho BACH should be played as much as possible in any thinkable wise and kind .. even if its not the classical one. this music should endlessly reach the minds of audience today...
There are two sides to being a great musician: technique and musicality. Garrett definitely has the first, but where is the second? Most of it is played forte with little dynamic variation, and more importantly, why so fast? Come to think about it, I've never heard him play slowly.
Speed works for flight of the bumblebee, and other such pieces, but NOT for Bach.
David Garrett! Lass bitte die Finger von den Sonaten und Partiten von Bach!
Also tut mir ja Leid... Der Typ ist ein mords guter Geiger... aber wo ist das Gefühl für dieses Stück geblieben?? Ich will nicht wissen, wie er die Chaconne spielt..
David has a genuine artistic approach to everything he plays.
He is enjoying crossing over as well. What's wrong with that?
He has a sound that is reminiscent of the old world charm, and technique to burn. Listen to his Clair de Lune, it is very Heifetzy in sound production, articulation, timing as well as slides. It is beautifully played.
David Garrett is THE best violinist of the past decade+. He interprets music, as any artist does. He's not trying to be anything he is not. He plays the music how he hears in in his genious of a mind.
I think originality is important... He doesn't have to follow a guideline that doesn't exist, Bach did not make the piece for people to follow it strictly.

AWFUL!! the worst thing about this is his vibrato...vibrato while playing Bach?!...the sound is horrible...I can´t hear a simple note of Bach there...he doesn´t know anything about him....it was a terrible experience to watch this vid and I will never watch a video of David Garrett again
So you agree with this way how to play Bach?.....Have you ever played some old baroque music (Bach)?...you would know that vibrato is impossible and the sound must be flat but formed by your right hand...he uses horribly lot of vibrato and has no idea in right hand!
If you want to be true to Bach you would have to use a Baroque violin, a baroque bow, gut strings and tune the instrument different. With the new instruments and steel strings you have to use a certain amount of vibrato on A and E or else it will sound too hard, and not at all as it did 300 years ago.
@beffalo13 Well.....IMHO, Claire de Lune's just boring...I'm not into the Impressionist stuff regardless of whether I play or someone else does. *lol* I do however, greatly admire his work with a number of other songs.
I understand your point, but you shouldn't expres that way about Garrett, is his interpretation of the melody, is like an opinion about something, it's something you interpretate your way and besides, he's not Bach, he's David Garrett.
@ppimpolh00 you are probably not really open to create interpetations ... imho bach should be played in our time especially as free as possible. are you a violin player? good one i suppose...
@ppimpolh00 Yeah right! i'm amazed how you could become so skilled in violin technique and have absolutely no feeling or taste for this music. Garbage!
@ppimpolh00 Well, you know. I think that he is perfect for Schubert, for metal pieces, but yea. He plays so heavy, like a bear. I have absolutely the same problem with it.
I really don't want to compare myself with him, because I'm just...nothing, but it's really hard for me to play baroque pieces. I don't know why. Baroque must be so gentle, so... Well, I have no idea how to call that thing, but I hope you will understand.
And he plays it with his emotions, feelings...Perfect for romanticism.
