The vocoder part is awesome, even better than on the studio album were it was very good, stunning doing this live...I wonder how he could connect his vocoder to the prophet, good knowing from his old gear
phils high hat usage is way advanced b4 its time, truly great playing, mark bass is always amazing considering he's singing as well , boon and mike are just awesome
omg he had had some empty drinks thrown to his head. I stood near him, call me a liar, good diam old times, i feekin loved his les paul! Great recording!
Wally Badarou on percussion, almost the fifth member back then. Standing in the light, first album i ever bought, produced by EWF's Verdine White and Larry Dunn, great stuff
That's Leroy Williams on percussion - not Wally Badarou. Wally is a keyboard player rather than a perscussionist and never (unfortunately) played live with Level 42.
If there were an Oscar for 'physical onstage vitality' Level 42 would be the all time winner. All they did in studios, is lousy crap. They always needed the stage, to explode. And they did!

Mark King's bass sounded so flat...although he could play. Should have sounded much richer like Louis Johnson's. Mike Lindup is cool. The rest of the band is rubbish.
not so corigraves, WBLS NYC used to play starchild back in 1980 on the Frankie Crocker show. I was 9 years old and asked to have the 45 puchased for me. Been a fan a long time. a little miffed that they don't do more u.s. dates.
Am I right in thinking Mike used a Roland SVK-350 rackmount for the vocoder sound? If so what part did the Prophet play - I don't believe it had a MIDI input?
i was 15 when this was done .. but thousands of miles accross the ocean .. most North Americans hadn't had the pleasure of this sound yet!! But it would come !!!!
All the guys sound Amazing,Phil is making the drums funky as always!

I stand corrected! I knew Badarou was a keyboardist but thought he did perc aswell. Was Leroy Williams a regular with them back then?
mrbenn71 2 years ago
He played with them a fair bit in the early eighties and also played on their debut album. No idea what he's up to now though.
