I take it you've never seen the stage version. I've seen both Donny and Lee on stage. Donny did the traditional camp version. Lee did it more dramatically and it was an entirely new show. When he when he went to meet his father at the end, the entire theatre went from cheers to complete silence.

Both were completely different interpretations.
