I am ashamed of all of these hacks. Not only do they ruin a perfectly good retro computer, but they don't even use a CRT. The hackers could at least try and use the original screen, or a similar-sized CRT. That would at least make it look authentic.
Yeah, because after twenty odd years of hardware failures they DEFINITELY hacked up a working one...
The donor mac probably wasn't worth fixing up. Although for the CRT monitor they should just have cut the front glass off of the old CRT, cleaned it out and put the lcd behind it.
No, no LCD! Hacks using LCDs are highly inauthentic. They should use a CRT (original or a different CRT that is similarly-sized) for authenticity. They might be able to find a cheap colour RGB monitor that is correctly sized if they absolutely need colour. If colour isn't an issue, they can use the original.
You do know if they used the front crt glass you wouldn't be able to tell, right?
And do you know how much of a pain in the ass Hooking up a 80s b&w CRT would be? That shit ain't exactly got a vga connector. Finding another crt is out too, as different models have different screen curves.
And if you can find a colour CRT that isn't too long to fit in the case, i'd really like too see it.
Nevermind the hideously low resolution would make a modern os unusable.
People HAVE hacked the original CRT monitor to work with newer hardware. In fact, I remember a mod someone did to a Macintosh SE where they modded a PC into the case, but still used the original CRT.
Furthermore, CRTs look so much better than LCDs. LCDs look like shite, unless you pay an arseload of money. Good CRTs can be found for cheaper, and even dumpster CRTs look good (in fact, my monitor is a trash day find).
nice to see a fellow CRT fan. I use my 2001 CRT that I found in the trash 2 years ago. The picture is absolutely perfect on it. In fact, it is too good for the shite PC that is connected to it.
I'll never understand how CRTs died. I mean, by the time they stopped production, they had flat glass, widescreens, and 120hz or higher refresh rates. And they cost almost nothing.
Then everyone went and picked the option with poor contrast and lighting instead.
That's not what I meant, I know that's a keyboard, I was replying to XinkinXark's comment...if alaptop is the size of that keyboard it is one fat laptop.

Oh, I know the CRT hack has been done, but it's a huge pain in the ass. Very few people have the know how to do it.
You don't need to tell me about how awesome CRTs are.
LCDs are like a smudge in a blur factory, as viewed though a cheese grater.
And the contrast is bullshit too.
And the brightness is different one pixel to the next.
And they lag like ass.
And the pixels have huge gaps between them, and a terrible grid layout.
Still using my CRT from 2004, will never get rid of it.
