@rhkatz3@rhkatz3 I haven't read the book but looking at the cultural understanding of doulos in those days, I think MacArthur's right. The same understanding pervades the OT understanding of what a servant/slave is. Also note that he didn't say we're only slaves but slaves that become sons and joint heirs. The problem with only seeing doulos as servant often is that we see God just as an employer, not master. All he's saying is not to impose our modern understanding of 'servant' on 'doulos'.
The most profound reality for me as a believer is my relationship with Jesus Christ. He is my Savior, my teacher, & my friend. But the Bible teaches at the most basic level Jesus is my Lord, my Master, which means I'm His slave. In Mark 8:35 Jesus taught the people & His disciples they must lose their life for His sake & the gospel.
(Jesus came to take over. Romans 10:9). People lay down their lives for a cause. Is He not a worthy one? Lk 12:8-9, Mk 8:34-38, 1 Jn 2:15-17, Jn 8:31-32, 2 Cor 5:21
"Doctor" John MacArthur? Nonsense. The man has never earned an academic doctorate, and is therefore not entitled to be addressed in the same manner as one who has.
An honorary doctorate no more entitles him to be addressed as "Doctor" than a pair of United Junior Captain's wings entitle my four year old nephew to take the controls of a Boeing 767 on final approach.
Erm...if MacArthur (or anyone who professes to be a Christian) just opened up a King James Bible to 1 Corinthians 7:20-24 and read what it actually says and believed it, he could have had this "revolutionary" paradigm shift in his understanding of his identity in Christ, without getting bogged down with the semantics game of 'doulos' - 'servant' versus 'slave', or writing a new book (I could say something cynical here), or be arrogant enough to think God needs his help by correcting His word!
I also checked MacArthur's Charismatic Chaos that came in at three and one-half stars. Many people were pleased with the book, but the ones that weren't really weren't! They thought he only picked and chose scriptures to suit his opinions and was a little bigotted in his viewpoints as well as mean-spirited.
That is the run down on several well known books for you, if you are interested.
but there are several that come in at all 5 stars! "The Power of Simple Prayer: How To Talk To God About Anything" was one. Nothing less than 4 stars in the reviews! There was someone dissappointed that they had not received their book yet and gave 1 star, but that is not a pan. "Ending Your Day Right: Devotions For Every Evening of the Year" another with 5 stars, as was "Straight Talk: Overcoming Emotional Battles With the Power of God's Word" which came in with NO pans! Nothing but 5 stars!
Biblical reasons why this was probably not so, and like someone said below: that after all these years He is the one to discover this new truth.
I also checked on Osteen. His "flagship" book "Your Best Life Now" came in with 4 stars too. The pans were what we see and hear everyday right here, so no need to repeat them. He has one new book, sorry, don't remember the name that is coming in at all 5 stars!
Finally I checked on Joyce Meyer. Most of her books come in at four and one-half stars,
TheSapphirestation ....Joyce Meyer? = equals 1 big delusion of lies & lying-by-omission lies about health - wealth - speaking in tongues - false teaching after false teaching. There is a reason her Church gave her the boot~
@memama2 There is always the argument of lies, lying by omission, health and wealth (although I thought that was Olsteen's thing) speaking in tongues, etc. And, there is never any resolution to the argument, is there? If her church gave her the boot, the real question is did she repent for what she did or not, and that we don't know for sure. Only God knows that one, so we can't judge her on that. In other words, it doesn't matter why she was booted, did she repent? If she did, God likely
@memama2 forgave her and so should we. I like the bible and many other books that I am sure you would think are not worth their time because they are not the Bible. My congregation says to read all good books. And, I enjoy hers, they minister to me, just like the Bible.
I would likely not enjoy MacArthur's "Slave" because I think it breaks some scripture that is important, such as: Romans 8:15 that says,
@memama2 "For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba," Father." We are not slaves because slaves have no choice about staying or going. We do! We can accept Christ's teachings or not, it is up to us.
I did a little research of three authors on Amazon.com. One of them was of course MacArthur and "Slave". Overall the book came in at 4 stars. What I think is always the most telling thing about any book is to read the glowing reports AND the "pans" of it. The glowing reports were what you might think. They loved it and learned a lot about their relationship with Christ, etc. The "pans were interesting. They went from thinking it was boring, repetative, could have confined this to a paper instead
Some other great books everyone should read are: "Ashamed of the Gospel", "The Truth War", "The Gospel According to Jesus", "Fools Gold", "Charismatic Chaos"
This is total and complete FOOLISHNESS. There is new, revolutionary, or transforming illumination on this subject whatsoever. This is a CLEAR ATTEMPT to sell books, dvd's, and seminars.
I'm very disappointed in John MacArthur. I will indeed address this in a soon coming video.
@skifast In all my experience with Christ and God, they never say I said this but I mean that. They say what they mean and mean what they say! So don't think that Christ said that but he meant this other thing when you read it.
Doulos...slave... IMHO, I think they both (God and Christ - I separate them Father & Son) would be insulted with the idea. Christ willingly paid the price for us with his death and we can take advantage of it if we choose, but unlike a slave, we are not forced to do so.
@skifast In all your studies you must have come upon a few errors in translation too. There is one glaring error in the New Testament in the Lord's Prayer. It had been bothering me since I was about 9 years old, because the prayer itself, never made sense, especially one phrase. That was a while ago. Finally I found someone with the correct translation. NOW it makes sense! Most people have trouble when I point it out, so I will let you find it.
So perhaps this is not a distortion of truth on everyone's part, and Macarthur did not, on his own discover the "hidden" word that marks the believer's identity, so why have no other preachers revealed this word before in their preaching? It is an important word/concept in my opinion. Also, Macarthur will be able to explain more in his book. Therefore, I believe this video was to help others, like me (who knew nothing of this word before Macarthur explained it, to just understand more.
It's all there in the Greek. Have you heard of Esword? It's a free download Bible program that has multiple translations, dictionaries, commentaries, and concordances etc. I often use it to cite Greek and Hebrew definitions. All we are saying is that John is not saying anything new. The WBTS exclusively translates that word as slave in their Bible; New World Translation.
"G1401 δοῦλος doulos Thayer Definition: 1) a slave, bondman, man of servile condition 1a) a slave 1b) metaphorically, one who gives himself up to another’s will those whose service is used by Christ in extending and advancing his cause among men 1c) devoted to another to the disregard of one’s own interests 2) a servant, attendant" >>> Looks like Thayer wasn't hiding anything either...
"The word "douleia", used often by contemporary Greeks, is translated as "work", and this is not by chance. Additionally, the accurate translation of the word slave is "sklavos". This shows that Greeks distinguish "doulos" from slave.
In Athenian Democracy a doulos is not actually the same as a slave, but "doulos" may have had an identical meaning to "slave" in other ancient Greek city-states, like Sparta."---wordiQ (dot) com
The word "sklavos" is a newer term that did not come into use until around the 6th century. The most common term for slave in Jesus' time was "doulos." You should read the book. It will answer some of your concerns.
Has everyone below studied the Bible 30 hours a week for over 30 years??? I think not! It is easy to be critical of MacArthur when you know nothing about him and his love for Christ and his love for the Word.
Dark ages? Marketing Campaign? Macarthur corrupting the Gospel? Let me ask you, Middleman, Empiri, Bridge and more, how much do you intently study the Bible a day, with a pure heart, seeking the Lord's wisdom in what you read? How many years have you been reading and can you actually say these things without looking at the heart of Macarthur and knowing his intentions? Certainly not! But, go study greek, hebrew, and all translations of the Bible, mature your faith, and then come back
I actually like the guy and most of his preaching. I listen to him on the local radio here in L. A. I just feel/see some sensationalism here...just my opinion.
@middleman777 I think the marketing campaign has been started already! This was a flat out advertisement for his book, "Slave"! I'll bet you get a good audience on YouTube too!! I've read how some people have already bought it! I thought maybe it was people in his congregation doing the buying, but nope. Right here, they are hearing the ad right here!!
@TheSapphirestation You should read it, it's a good book and he is a great bible expositor. You should start listening to John McArthur(Grace to You), you will definately learn about scripture. But if you continue to listen to that false teacher Joel Osteen you won't learn a thing.
John also has a great study bible, you should get it, that is if you want to learn something. He like all true Christians know that JW's and Mormons are cults.
@TheSapphirestation Why am I not surprised. You do not want to know the truth, just your version. But that's no truth at all is it? In all love be warned of the path you're on. Not because you won't read John McArthur but because you will not except the truth, that makes me fear for you.
MacArthur believes he has uncovered hidden truth, that was distorted and/or concealed through "conspiracy, a cover up," a truth that no one in NT history has discovered until he has. Red Flag! This promises be another abuse of Scripture from his "Lordship Salvation" theology. Since MacArthur has corrupted the Gospel, i.e. the faith that saves through Lordship Salvation, corrupted the simplicity that is in Christ (2 Cor. 11:3) , his new discovery will never square with the whole counsel of God.
@empiricist93 -- I agree. I've studied cults in depth, and feel very nervous when i hear the grandiose claim of "new light." "There has been a conspiracy to cover up a truth that is SO essential to the New Testament, that without it, we misunderstand our relationship to Jesus Christ." What?! Pity all the believers that have lived in the dark ages before MacArthur! -- Reminds me of the JW claim of conspiracy to remove the word "Jehovah".
This is a theological issue that needs to be addressed over and over in today's world especially. This will make waves no doubt, and I appreciate John MacArthur being willing to take on this important subject. It may not be a new truth, but the "deeper life" Christians of today want to play down and even explain away this Biblical truth and we need to get back to it!
This is absolutely nothing new. When we read works of deeper life Christians such as Andrew Murray ("Like Christ, With Christ in the School of Obedience" etc.) and others, these points are simply reiterations. Not to say that Mr. MacArthur stole these ideas, mind you, but they have been around for a few hundred years, yet largely ignored by mainstream Christendom. Kudos to MacArthur for bringing them to the surface again, but really, "nothing new under the sun."
This is so true. Awesome, I'll look forward to reading it. A slave does not make a decision or participate in his own purchase. He is bought and owned. So many people think they need to make a "decision" for Christ. But one dead in trespasses and sins is incapable of making any decisions at all, so the Master has to make Him spiritually alive by His will. It is not our own will at work when we are redeemed. It is God's.
This is incredible. It is a huge revelation
