I am looking at this product for my Nikon D700 . I am not a pro wild life shooter . Uses for my vacation to National Parks . Whats your advice in getting this for D700 . can u please let me know .. meetrijas@gmail.com
I had this lens and the lens creep gets much worse the longer you own it but really this is not a problem as you can start to use it like canon's 100-400mm push pull lens but there is one thing i found that gets bad with time is the lens moves around abit when you zoom it out to 500mm. but apart from that it is a brilliant lens for the money so sharp and light i used it hand held for a full day doing motorsports photography
Hi, I live in Hawaii, I want to buy a lens to shoot surfing photo, so, the action is a bit fast, but in Hawaii, the sun light is good most of the time. Do you think this lens is fast enough to do the job? I have a Nikon D7000. Thanks

I'd like to see the lens close-up. It would be nice to see where the hood attaches, how easy/difficult it is to put on and take off, etc. I'd also like to see the switches cose-up, with you showing how easy/difficult they are to switch. I have an old lens that has a crappy switch. I had problems with the switches on my Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS, because they were difficult to grip, and they were hard to switch. Is this the case with the big Sigma lenses?
I just checked out your website... you have some pretty good shots. I have a video on my page of some of my work as well you should check it out and let me know what you think as you seem to be pretty knowledgable around the camera.
good review. what's the minimum focal distance on this thing? I'd like to use it for insects but kinda thinking 400/500mm would push me too far back to even spot a subject. anyhow, good video.
@grassyapple hello, i need help. i have canon EF 24-105mm F4 IS USM mount on 1D Mark iii, i need more zoom lens, for you which is the best, Canon 70-200mm F4 or Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 APO DG macro.tnx.
I have this lens. My lens creep is a max of 2-3mm, so perhaps you've damaged your lens or got a bad product. My lens hood is fine, I have dropped it many times and no scratches. Also, with the hood on, and removing/putting on the lens cap, you just need to be more careful.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@xdarrylx Two things - One don't tell me what to do (that means KISS MY ASS) Two- MANY people have the same creep as mine the pictures are the important part and they are not effected by it.
@grassyapple I won't be kissing your ass and I will do as I please. I have absolutely no problem putting on the lens cap with the lens hood attached. I have never scratched my lens hood, on any of my Sigma lenses. But then again I obviously take more care of my equipment than you it would seem. The creep. I get it, but not that bad. I guess I got lucky :)
Now where can I find some of your images? I wish to judge them like everyone else.
@xdarrylx LOL good luck to you in your picture taking. Sorry about my comments yesterday. I'm under a lot of stress and I have a wedding today (which doesn't help). AAAAAAA My bad man I apologize to you. For real my other sigma lenses are in mint. This one must be weird cause it can just be sitting there and over time, I don't know it's like chips come out. Bad paint job I guess, still love the lens tho, it's just too slow but for the price it's nice. Some of the scratches DID come from me tho
How accurate is the AF? And how is the Bokeh? Can you tell difference in the pictures when it comes to lighting and vignetting when you change aperture and focal length?
@MediaAde I haven't had a problem with any vignetting with this lens. The AF is very accurate, I haven't got anything bad to say about this lens. The Bokeh isn't too bad, 500mm, considering. But very good at 150mm full frame.
I owned this lens for over 2 years, and got some really good shots with it. But I never got great shots. It shoots soft at the long end of the zoom range, and never gets that razor sharp shot. I had 3 different copies of it, had issues with the OS system, and each time they sent a brand new lens. I have recently purchased the Canon 100-400L and it is night and day better than the Sigma. It was mounted on my 30D and 7D.
Nope, and no lens on the planet could anyone hold steady on a small bird from 60 meters out and manually focus it. You would be too shaky unless you had a tripod and even then it would be tough. Especially on a small bird, those things fidget all over the place so if by chance you did successfully manually focus on the subject it would probably move and dance around. Causing much frustrating on yourself because the second it did the bird would be out of focus again.
You will have an array of problems shooting a little bird from that distance. I would snap off a quick few in auto focus and then set it to manual only if you had a tripod.
Thanks for your video. A question. What do you suggest for a little bird which is in a tree in a distance 60-80 meters; AF Manual or AF automatic ? Thanks
Hi my friend, 1st i thank you very much for the video. How much in Euros a lense like this? I like to register birds and thinking to buy a EOS 550D + a Sigma 150-500mm Is apropriate? Thank you.
Thank you for this video, I was looking to purchase this lens, but your video gave me some good tips as well. I now have the lens and just came back here to get the strap you attach to your waist thanks again
Nice straight forward review of this lens. I owned the lens for Nikon for about a year and a half (end up selling it though) and would agree with everything you have said regarding both strengths and weaknesses of the lens. For the price it's a very good lens. I finally sold mine because of suboptimal results and speed in low light conditions due to aperture constraints and because I also found myself only using it up to about 450mm to prevent really soft images (as u mentioned).
Great review, like your mobile leash ideas. I have a shoulder bag which I keep as a permanent fixture to myself while swapping lenses, SD cards, adding mini tripods etc as I know the value of keeping mobile. Yes, I'd like very much to see your birding adventure. I've been disappointed with my Canon 55-250mm so far at capturing wildlife (great for moon shots tho).
thanks for posting this video. I'm definately going to check out the website. quick question though. since the XSI is APS-C what's the 35mm zoom equivalent you get with that lens?
@quickshooter100 excuse me I'm here to help folks not be harassed by you.But congrads out of over 70 comments your the first negative one. You MUST BE A REAL NICE PERSON. Anyway b+w mrc glass filters are some of the best glass filters out there, and it wasn't cheap. so keep your thoughts to yourself please. Or post it on a video or something but don't write on my page.
@quickshooter100 Thank you for another nice reply, are you Done? I thought I said not to post here. I use the filter because I'm in the bush and go off trail to some crazy places. Whatever man I don't need to explain myself to you.
@sdsbhatia I only know you can use it with a w/ Sony Minolta Mount. I'm not familiar with Sony but if you have a Sony Minolta mount than it will work, yes.
@chriselpuma That I can not answer I would suspect the Nikon would be slightly nicer but I have been told differently. I would track down as many pictures as I could from each and remember the skill level of the photographer and the camera they use.
@chriselpuma if you are going to use the cam for hardcore photography, than don't buy the 80-400 or the 150-500. That is because if the more you can zoom on a lens, that means that u have more lenses inside the lens itself. which means the light needs to go through all those smaller lenses, which means that you are not going to get bright images. So, more zoom, more lens, darker and lower quality picture. darker picture, longer shutter speed.
@geneycab If the light is good yes you could. Night games could be an issue, I'm going to Pittsburgh Pirate game in 3 days and I will be taking day and night sport shots with it. I will let you know more than.
I have had the Sigma Enigma about a month now and this is my first experience with a lens of this size, weight and zoom. It takes a while to bring it all together and your recommendations for the cotton carrier and minimum shutter speeds of 800 are very helpful as well as the cropping effect at various distances. Your critique puts into perspective, the limits of a zoom lens of this proportion.
just checked out your 18-250 sigma lens pictures on your website and wow. That's a very sharp lens you have there.Nice waterfall Pic's. Did you need a ND filter on the lens to get the shutter speed down for the milky water. Just asking because if you did use a ND filter then how sharp would it be without the filter lol.
The sigma 18-250 will be my next review. I didn't use any filter, I was just lucky and had a overcast tornado warning day which is best for waterfalls. That or getting up at the crack of dawn which I haven't done yet, lol.
I got the 100-400L canon lens and had bad back focusing. exchanged for another new one that had back focusing issue as well and was even a softer lens than the first.They then sent this lens of to canon to calibrate and it came back better but not great.This time i told shop to stick canon lens and try the sigma 150-500mm (The lens i was originally going to get lol) and it focuses perfect. Seems you dont always get more for your money now. Has canon gone down hil in quality or sigma gone up lol
@adey7569 Very nice to know. I always wanted to try the L I would have been surprised if it didn't do a better job than the Sigma. So I guess I'm a little surprised but only a little, haha. I just got a Sigma 18-250 which I will be reviewing soon and it's awesome. So perhaps Sigma is stepping up their game. I have some sample pics I took with it on my site. I also took family and senior pictures with it yesterday. I plan on using it as my backup/zoom wedding lens. Thanks for the comments
Hey man if you buy one through Adorama or B&H photo please please please go to my website (about me link) and click through my links. It's exactly the same as ordering directly through them. It helps me out a ton man, thanks in advance if you do for hookin a brother up.
NIce clip. Glad ya mentioned about the tethering the monopod tip.
You might want to look into a Gimbal head for it.
I use a Jobu Jr3 with mine & I love it.
Rock steady when I need it, but moves smooth as glass tracking birds or sporting events. It's GREAT for getting that high angle for moon & star gazing.
Yes it will work but I think you loose the auto focus. I wouldn't do it though it's already a semi-slow lens a x2 adapter would make it a turtle. If you had like a full frame camera or something I might (and that's a big might) put a x1.4 adapter on there and I also think with that one you would have auto focus.

@kush757 Unfortunately, the 150-500 is NOT one of the handful of lenses that retain auto focus functions with either the 1.4X or the 2X.
If you're using the 2X on a crop sensor, that's 35mmEQ of 1600mm@f13. Best to go with higher ISO, a good sandbagged tripod & a laptop with the EOS Utiltiy at that range.
I was thinking of getting this lens with the Canon 550D for wildlife shooting.I think your camera has a similar FPS of about 3.5fps. Are you happy with this speed or do you with it was faster, Have you missed many shoots through lack of camera speed.If so i may save a little more for the Canon 7D which does 8 FPS. If you don't find it to much of a pain maybe the 550D will do and i could spend the extra on a wide angle lens.
Yes, I do the same with my 70 - 300 zoom,I don't go over ISO 400,I still can't decide between the Sigma 100 - 300 f. 4 and this 150 - 500 lens.I wish the 100 - 300 had stabilization but it doesn't .This 500mm lens seems to be quite heavy,that's the one problem I see with it. Thanks for your tip.
Thanks sir,but that means that you have ISO set on auto if you wish to maintain your speed at 640 minimum and aperture around 7.1,right? Thanks for the great review of this lens.I'm just getting into bird photography.Cheers.Pilsenaaa
Yeah I would keep it on auto if I had a better camera but the max I can go is 400 without (or little) noise. So you can imagine I don't always maintain the speed that I like.
never touched the material, but it looks and sounds like the same material they use on the black nintendo DSi.. i own one and the material IT IS very annoying, easily scratched.. even if u nail touched it, it leaves a mark.. but u get used to it.
This was helpfull. Actually made me less "dissatisfied" with my current 300mm. Because as you say, you need to get close even though your are at 500mm. Those perfectly crisp closeup of tiny featherballs are really about getting close enough in the first place:)
I carry a second camera--a D40X---using the belt clip on the right side. This is the best rig I have ever used for carrying two cameras at the same time.
That's so cool that you use the same set up. You can also take the mountain clip and attach it right to the side of the carrier as well. It might actually be more comfortable.
haha, looks stupid with the tripod just hanging xD

I hear the lens is not it's sharpest at 500mm...
Say that your subject is very far away. Is it better to shoot at 400mm or around 450mm then crop in post or to shoot at 500mm for sharpest results?

Just a question - you know how most canon bodies will only autofocus at f/5.6 and faster; this is f/6.3 at the long end, so how does it still work?

@whatevergable Its fine if at least some of it is F5.6 and faster.

@geneycab If the light is good yes you could. Night games could be an issue, I'm going to Pittsburgh Pirate game in 3 days and I will be taking day and night sport shots with it. I will let you know more than.

One thing I'm concerned about is how fast does the motor focus on this lens. Maybe you can show us how fast this lens focus on your rebel? Thanks.

Thank you!

just checked out your 18-250 sigma lens pictures on your website and wow. That's a very sharp lens you have there.Nice waterfall Pic's. Did you need a ND filter on the lens to get the shutter speed down for the milky water. Just asking because if you did use a ND filter then how sharp would it be without the filter lol.
adey7569 1 year ago
@adey7569

Has canon gone down hil in quality or sigma gone up lol
adey7569 1 year ago
@adey7569 Very nice to know. I always wanted to try the L I would have been surprised if it didn't do a better job than the Sigma. So I guess I'm a little surprised but only a little, haha. I just got a Sigma 18-250 which I will be reviewing soon and it's awesome. So perhaps Sigma is stepping up their game. I have some sample pics I took with it on my site. I also took family and senior pictures with it yesterday. I plan on using it as my backup/zoom wedding lens. Thanks for the comments

How could plastic possibly scratch glass?

@sinoperture
Sorry I believe it can hurt the coating on the glass not the glass itself. Would it effect the photograph? Probably not

Good stuff man...very helpful review, u dont find many of them for the 150-500!
Neat pics on flickr too...just added you in. :)
One thing, the sigma 2x extender...is it compatible with the 150-500? And does it offer auto focus all through out the zoom range ?
Thanks.
kush757 1 year ago
@kush757

BTW, a 7D takes nice moon shots with one. ;)
SC0RePIO 1 year ago
@SC0RePIO Hey...thanks for clarifying it for me. :D
I've been thinking about the same, the craters on the moon is what i would like to see too. :D

Have a few comments friend
1. You can crop and zoom that well with a canon 800 5.6 L and a 1D body
2. Great photos
3. You need a 1d or 7D for speed and focus in birds and wildlife canon L glass IS perfect

If you don't find it to much of a pain maybe the 550D will do and i could spend the extra on a wide angle lens.
adey7569 1 year ago
@adey7569
A 7D works wonderfully with this lens. Those extra cross-linked focus points, the high ISO capabilities and the burst rate are WELL worth it.
Check out my comment to grassyapple about the tripod head.
Jobu gimbals work great with this lens.

Pilsenaaa 1 year ago
Thanks sir,but that means that you have ISO set on auto if you wish to maintain your speed at 640 minimum and aperture around 7.1,right? Thanks for the great review of this lens.I'm just getting into bird photography.Cheers.Pilsenaaa
Pilsenaaa 1 year ago
@Pilsenaaa
Yeah I would keep it on auto if I had a better camera but the max I can go is 400 without (or little) noise. So you can imagine I don't always maintain the speed that I like.

never touched the material, but it looks and sounds like the same material they use on the black nintendo DSi.. i own one and the material IT IS very annoying, easily scratched.. even if u nail touched it, it leaves a mark.. but u get used to it.

grassyapple 1 year ago
This was helpfull. Actually made me less "dissatisfied" with my current 300mm. Because as you say, you need to get close even though your are at 500mm. Those perfectly crisp closeup of tiny featherballs are really about getting close enough in the first place:)

What head do you use on the monopod :O
delohclooney 1 year ago
@delohclooney
I use a Manfrotto 3229 and has been replaced by the 234RC
grassyapple 1 year ago
I didn't think of that, it would let dust in. Why would any lens company make a lens that is a push pull is beyond me.
grassyapple 1 year ago
the canon 100-400mm that you are talking about, is not as god as the lens you have, because it is a push pull, thats making vakuum and pull dust in.

I carry a second camera--a D40X---using the belt clip on the right side. This is the best rig I have ever used for carrying two cameras at the same time.

I use the Cotton Carrier to carry my Nikon D60+Sigma 150-500. I also have the same monopod and quick release. Great idea with the strap. Good job.
ocardaugh 1 year ago
That's so cool that you use the same set up. You can also take the mountain clip and attach it right to the side of the carrier as well. It might actually be more comfortable.
