In part they did the right thing. The Saturn Maria is entirely a different character, so it makes little sense to have her as some sort of Megaman clone with magical powers. But the PSP Maria is way too weak and sluggish to control, so even IGA's version is not a good option.

The Saturn version better than the rest? No way. The new levels suck (they are totally alien to the rest of the castle) and Maria doesn't play at all like in Rondo. Slowdowns and crappy gfx makes the game worse than the Psx original.
And about the PSP version, has only Maria as an extra, and she plays like crap (not to mention the god awful boss battle with her). Add random slowdowns and several bugs here and there and you have yet again an inferior porting of the original. The Psx version is still the best, no matter what they add to compensate the bugs they introduce with each new porting.

Saturn could do hardware 2D transparency, and it could squeeze out more demanding games (Astal, X-Men vs Street Fighter) without any performance issues. Why this game has almost no transparency (save for a few random areas), and why this thing is so slow will remain a mystery - and a slap in the face to Saturn owners.

No, you can play as Maria in the Saturn version and as the alternate Richte! You can play them right from the start, I know because I was just playing it a few minutes ago!

The spoken dialogue is all Japanese but like a lot of import games some menu options are in English, as well as some scrolling text. If you've played SotN then you can figure it out pretty easy.
Can't really get into the PSX vs. Saturn fanboy debate cuz each version has pros and cons. Just be happy with one or get 'em both.
The only difficult part is figuring out which item is which in some cases. Certain ones (weapons included) look identical or very close to identical. Otherwise, the game is very playable if you're familiar with the U.S. version.
The fight doesn't make much sense in the context of the game though. Too bad they didn't include the unused ending in the Saturn version, now that would have been interesting!

On the PSP version of the symphony of the night, you fight againts Maria too...and you can play as maria!!!
But this battle is SO diferent, Maria on the PSP ataks you with the Animal friends of maria, she uses all the abilities of the Rondo of blood.
