James himself explained this song to be about having something that you really believe in but it appears to be non-existent or to have betrayed you but it actually was there all along just in different ways.
Agreed, I like Jason better than Robert. Tho Jason was better with Flotsam & Jetsam, and Rob was best with Suicidal Tendencies. Cliff fit Metallica best.
The song's about how James' parents were members of the Christian Science religion, which doesn't believe in doctors. If you're sick, you don't go to the doctor, you have a guy come in and pray to make you better. Even if you're arm's broken, you don't get a cast. In school, you can't have biology or health classes, either.
James' mom died of cancer when he was 15-16, and she didn't go to the doctor once.
It's all about how people use God in the wrong ways.
It makes me sad, that James' voice sounds so weak and hoarse on this track. He sounds so much stronger on the newer stuff. He must have been rusty on this, or maybe sick. Either way, great song, bad audio. Would love to hear this song live in person.
This is about how people seem to rely too much on religion to help with their problems. When James Hetfield's mother had cancer, she didn't take medication because she believed faith would heal her. Some time later, she died. (thanks, Joseph - LA, CA)
its a mix of both, and i dont have to spell right cuz its the internet, only a retard would try and spell every singl thing right, but screw all the atheist shit, its a good song and that sall that matters
Look at Lars he goes from a big ass and powerful drum kit to a kit that little kids play when they first start out and as far as James voice its sucks here but it has gotten better but not as good as the Justice Black Albums era I don't like Robert he dosent sing back ups like Jason does as we saw at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame the only reason why Rob sang back up vocals was because Jason was able to help him Jason please fucking come back Metallica isn't the same without you there better w you
ive said that on like 5 different vids and every1 hates me 4 it, JASON AND CLIFF ROCKED, i nevr liked rob cuz since he joined metallica hasnt released any great albums, justice wuz the last great 1 and the black album wuz the last awesome 1
i think all gods have failed. seriously im atheist and most of my 13 yeAR old friends r thats how good the freakin church is at there mind control crap now. freakin 13 year olds dont even believe in it
actually its about when he was a child how he was forced into a religion and couldn't ever go the doctor and shit, trust me its on Metallica - the black album dvd in special features
Yeah they also have songs in which they call for god's help.
You probably want this song to be about atheism because you're an atheist, me too, and I see that part of the song's meaning too.
To be fair, this song probably is the most atheist manifestation of James' turbulent relation with religion; but you can see through his interviews now James believes in god. And I believe Lars is a long time Atheist.
I believe that's a good balance, and being an atheist makes this song kick more ass indeed
This song is about James parents . His mother had a cancer and she and his dad refuse to take treatment at hospital because they bealived God will cure her. And james had to take off some pages of his biology book in the school because they were "inappropriate." It's not about God, it's mroe about James relations with his parents and how religion had a big role in his life.
Yes I'm aware of that.. But there are a few songs you shouldn't play faster live... Like "Sad But true" Otherwise it wouldn't sound as heavy as it does
Not always. Ride The Lightning, Fade To Black, Jump In The Fire, Seek And Destroy, and many more are played way slower. Other songs like Master Of Puppets, Battery or Enter Sandman are played at the same tempo.
In case you didn't notice, that was my problem: people just stick too much to Cliff. Come on, the guy is dead, complaining like children won't change anything!
kirk sounds pretty bad?the best guitar player?the master of guitar?man have you checked your ears?kirk is getting better and better as the years pass and he is the most skillful of all in the band.their whole music is based on his guitar.man mercy please.

First off, The God is my 2nd favorite Metallica song of all time. Kirk is an alright guitar player, but have you EVER listened THROUGH Rust in Peace? And yea, Kirk has a lot of great solos on Death Magnetic, wich is one of my most-listened-to albums on my Ipod. But Metallica are great. Their fans sucks though. Rob is the fucking best bass player out there.
