this same thing happened to me. I was unexperienced, and didnt wear a helmet at all. I was feeling like a bad ass just bombing big hills and very tight turns. But one day I went a too fast and crashed like him, it was a bit worse than this one, and I was about 1 feet away from hitting a big rock with my head, I would have hit that rock if I droped off 1 second later. i learned a lesson, ALWAYS wear a helmet

He was very unexperienced. Yes, he may have taken the turn wrong. To his credit he was going somewhat fast and that turn is awkward no matter how you take it. the only reason he fell was because he hit a big patch of gravel in the ditch.

The injuries he sustained actually messed him up for a long time. He got MRSA and actually couldve died from it.
