merle haggard wrote this....he wrote it in a short time and never changed a word....its been recorded by over 150 diff artists.....one of the better songs written
has anyone ever read in waylon's bio where haggard cheated waylon in a poker game? I read it, I often wondered if this was waylon's payback!! I like haggard, but......ole waylon put the blues in this version!
When i was a kid i heard Waylon crank out "The bottle let me down" every day. It took until i was in my teens to know that it was a hit for Merle. I love MH but Waylon kicked ass on that song.
A good song is always good, and this one has been recorded by so many good artists. But MY favourite version is the one with John Fogerty and The Blue Ridge Mountain Boys!
@133Lumumba133 Yes. That is a great cover! Did you know Fogerty actually did that whole album by himself? Played every instrument and sang every track. Talent right there.
I believe the best version of this song I've ever heard was done by Gary Morris. Of course, Merle, Waylon, Willie and others have their own stamp on it. And of course, Merle (along with Buck Owens) wrote it. If you get a chance, check out Gary's rendition. It will knock your socks off.
thanks teddie, i've only heard this song once and been looking for it! I'm a big waylon fan while my brother is a big hag fan..GOT to show him this!! waylon put the beat to it!
Sharon , i do think it was Hag who wrote this song, but i agree think this is a great version, of a great song. Thanks for commenting, check out my channel if you like Waylon
Waylon;like Johnny;covered quite a few songs and how he put his print on them.He has such a voice;full of depth and emotion.Love the video..57 secs.Great picture.
Waylon's version is slightly faster than Merle's..... both, of course, are great, as they are giants in country music. I couldn't say which version I prefer. Waylon's vocal and phrasing is really intense on this song, really getting to the heart of the lyrics.
Brilliant.

Yes, of course this is one of Haggard's masterpieces, written in this case with Bonnie Owens.

The Obama prophecies, sobering!
False prophets in the churches will be performing counterfeit miracles, taken over by Satan.

Actually, make that Bonnie Owens ~ she's an ex-wife of Merle Haggard, and ironically, Buck Owens.

This is one of my favourite songs, and I've heard so many versions, I love Waylon to the point of idolatry, but I think Merle did this better.
