What makes you think there is no option? Most serious science today indicates that human behavior is learned, and therefore free will must enter into it. People can be trained to crave different things. Or was that your point... that there is a choice? I actually think it is more complex, because not all "gay" people are the same. There was very little socialism in Nazi Germany. Capitalism was as is...so much so, that Germany did not even nationalize every company and factory even with the start of the war. Hitler had some socialist grand schemes: Volkswagen ( a car for every family) etc. But they never came off the ground. In 1933, SA Brownshirts were dissapointed with Hitler's lack of radical economic changes, there was a lot of grumbling. That is also one of the reasons that Hitler took the SA out and put the SS in.

While I give the French full marks for kicking ass under Napoleon and toughing it out at Dien Bien Phu even after it was untenable, nowadays going to war without France (or most of Western Europe) is like going to war without your accordian.

Uggh.. Americans always tend to underline the word "socialist" in the NSDAP etc. European kids learn already in 5th grade or something that it had nothing to do with socialism. I thought that was common knowlage, but apparently it's not.
You can read the wiki article about NSDAP to understand the full background to why it had the word "socialist" in the name.. but the party was in no way ideologically socialist.

No, they took over the Weimar republic, which was a parliamentary democratic republic with a constitution established in 1919 in Germany to replace the imperial form of government that led to World War I. They were liberal, but they were not socialists.
