Weezer did influence many Emo bands out right now. However, the bands that were influenced by them are nothing like that of Weezer. If there were such thing as a good Emo band, this is definently them.

Chradnev is right, Weezer is considered very much an influence on the "emo" movement. If you listen to some of Pinkerton you can hear the "mall kids" music influence.

Emo has been around since the 80s, it just hasn't been used negatively until the late 90s or so. Originally, emo possessed characteristics similar to hardcore punk., but with a slightly more melodic approach and emotionally personal lyrics. If you want an example, Rites of Spring are probably one of the most popular early-emo bands. I actually enjoy that sort of thing, but in a modern context, emo is used to describe pop-influenced pseudo-punk.
