Just finished watching this lets play. Me and my partner watch a lot of your lets plays and enjoy them immensely. Especially your style. This is a great game and I have played it extensively myself. The ending is a huge surprise... Thanks very much though. We really enjoyed it.
Loved this game and your playthrough was hilarious. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
I understand why they made that ending, but I hated it the first time I played it and looked for another 'better' ending. It does leave some things open by making Rebecca the nurse though.
Hmm...something doesn't quite add up here. Looking back, Belial had a doctors uniform on. Why would that be? Seems to be no explanation...UNLESS it was meant to represent the doctor in the psychiatric hospital. If this is true, then all of this game is a fabrication in the mind of Adam, due to his insanity. The fact that one of the nurses looks like Rebecca compounds this. This is my theory anyway.
"The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
So the whole time you were actually just a hobo rampaging around a parking lot with your AK47 "wand" and your can of beans "healing potion." You know, up until this point I really enjoyed this game.
What a shitty ending. It doesn't even make sense, why would he tell anyone after he got out of the house? That is the only reason I can see that he would be taken as insane, and it doesn't make sense! So what, did he just go around blurting at the top of his lungs how he saved the world when he must have known that people would see him as crazy? Fuck that.
Well, I can't figure out why no one has suggested this so far, but here goes... I'm thinking the nurse really IS Rebeccah, sent to free him from his imprisonment and then to return to her duties doing who-knows-what... Notice how the music gets sort of 'Harry Potter-like' when it shows her?
Either that, or he IS just crazy and made it all up, but that sort of seems like the cheap, easy answer, doesn't it?
This is one of my all time favorite games. I think the ending scene was one of the first times I'd actually played through a scinimatic set peace type escape scene that are in quite a few games today.
Just finished watching this lets play. I must thank you Kikoskia I would have never known such a great game existed. The story was amazing, the characters were greats and I enjoyed the ending almost as much as I enjoyed the first video.
So once again I thank you for another great lets play.
he is insane. the nurse is obviously rebecca and he projects her into his thoughts in his crazy story.the doctor also reminded me o belial for some reason. maybe he killed his dad and lost his sanity in doing so?
This is the perfect example of how a messed up ending can totally and completely ruin a game. This crap totally spoils all the hours spend with this game. RotH is still sitting on my shelf and I just bring myself to play it again. Hey, there is no reward, he is mad and made all up in his disturbed mind. Or it was all true and he got screwed royally. Anyway, there is no reward, so why should I play this again? Mekes me feel pissed off everytime I think of this game.
I should've guessed Adam was crazy when he had to find brains to feed the brain machine, the re-appearance of Belial and Rebecca seals it. Too bad... they could have done something good with the story.
He had been used and abused, not only that, the only female he'd gotten interested in used him from the start for a power gain. While he has to not only lose his family again, and his friends. Oh, what's even better is that he's not even allowed his old life for all he's done, not in the slightest.. Some Good force gratitude for you.
Worst Part, He'll never be sure if he saved his father and that wound will open again, and any credit he's due, is gone.
Ya I know, for that time period if he said anything about it, the trip, he'd be locked up.
Though it's a pretty dam cruel joke, considering the mental houses during that time for major cases used electroshock and some remove bitsO' brain, to try and cure patients.
So he's either Really crazy, and Extremely clever.
or, He's just been screwed for being the good guy. What a fing rip. This is why I detest religious orders who want their Heroes to sacrifice everything just because.
So you destroyed Florentine's Journals. Is it not enough that you brought with you a magical dagger, a magical wand, a magical staff, a blunderbuss that never runs out of ammunition, and a slew of magical curing potions? Or did those all disappear with the house? Or were you crazy all along? Or was the creators leaving room for a sequal that never got approved?
Wasn't that Rebecca about to give him his medicine? Also, if she visits him in dreams, then his being drugged to sleep is a good thing. Who wants to bet that the good Doctor was a student of Belial?
Anyways, he's seen eternity. A lifetime is very short in comparison. I'm sure there is a place awaiting him. (Aelf, I believe, was interred alive)
Yeah, i kinda feel the same way about the ending. He doesn't seem to upset and he seems eager to get to sleep and meet Rebecca... so it's not a bad ending after all.
And that is why you don't tell people about your journey into the spirit world, Heaven, and Hell, and how all that helped you save the world and explains why that one house just randomly didn't exist one day.
@puipuni It wasn't just a dream though. It actually happened but no one believed him so he ended up in an asylum. It's an appropriately gloomy ending to a gloomy game.
Thank you Kikoskia for this awesome LP. After watching this LP, I felt compelled to play it myself and finished the whole thing in 2 days (since I remembered most of it from the LP). The game lost some direction near the end though by throwing random puzzles and scavenger hunts at you, but the ending was great.
Wow, Kikoskia... That was truly ace! I daresay that was my favorite "Let's Play" to date -- and that's really saying something! :-) Thank you so very much!
This is a truly wonderful ending. There is absolutely no way to know for sure if Adam's actually crazy or if they just didn't believe him ; if he just used the medical staff he talks to every day as figures for his characters or if he really sees those people as actual characters of a completely invented story. Heck, this might even be Belial's revenge.
And Rebecca saying she'll be there in his dreams makes the whole thing all the more confusing.
I kind of expected this since you kept calling him a Cthulu investigator. Think most lovecraft style stories end in an asylum, dead, or somewhere in between.
Well the ending is somewhat open to interpretation.... one could also interpret it as Adam is REALLY crazy and the whole story is in his mind. (The nurse looks like Rebecca so she could have incorporate her in his delusion).
Of course this is just ona of the different ways to see this ending.
I remember this ending. It really dissapointed me back then. Three weeks of exciting gameplay, solving puzzles, drawing maps by hand, beating enemies and saving the world from destruction only to be recognized as insane and stupid. Ouch.
Great let's play kikoskia! I loved every second of it. And of course the game itself was fantastic, I was surprised how great the acting was for a video game.
Oh my gosh that was the best ending I have ever seen in a game, a brave ending too. They really don't make them like they used to. I think I write this at the end of almost every LP you do Kiko but thanks for picking some of the most inventive and enthralling games. Not including Action 52. Brilliant, brilliant ending.
Hmmm...to be fair, kikoskia did continually refer to Adams sanity points.....why didn't I listen??? Amazing LP though, gotta say. Quite the game indeed.
Loved that game... Played it through several times. Fortunately, the German-dubbed version of the game is as good as the original one. I spent several evenings figuring out the inventory system by editing the savegames with a hexeditor...
I liked your gameplay, I used to love this game :) I never understand the ending it was so short, I always thought like you that he was mental sick and I guess thats how it is they should have made a longer ending:) Thank you Kioska for playing trough it :)
Its such a shame that the game has not been given out as open source so that it can be remade in better quiality 3d and hires video.
It took me nearly a month to complete the game but I did manage to complete it and then played it from scratch again stright after as I then knew all the shortcuts and also could skip a lot of the video.
Is it true that this game could also run at a higher resolution by using a VESA driver?
Thanks and I am now off to watch another one of your walkthoughs
I'll tell you this; that was one of the most thoroughly enjoyable play-throughs I've seen here on Youtube. Something of an under-appreciated gem, this game, and with many a twist and turn that one can only find through repeated playing. I particularly appreciate that entire swathes of the story can only be found by reading various documents (such as Florentine's journals, etc) the contents of which have very real significance within the game itself. I do have a few questions, though: is there...
...any use for the dice that is picked up at one point? I could never find one myself. I'd ask the same of the various theatrical masks you find in the first study; I get the impression from my own experiences of the game that they are either red herrings or parts of potential puzzles that were never implemented. As with most stories of this epic, metaphysic ilk, my only disapppointment really came at the conclusion; after all of that wonderful build up, the battle with Belial is somewhat...
...underwhelming (I would've much prefered to see something of the increasing enmity between him and Florentine; maybe the two even coming to blows), and the confrontation in the soul-stone chamber simply doesn't feel like an appropriate pay off. And then we have the Mother of all cop outs; the whole "It was all just a dream/delusion" nonsense. Why did he tell anyone at all? Then he wouldn't be seen as crazy.
Plus, I get the feeling Belial was played by the doctor. That it never happened. That it was always a delusion.
Which is kind of cheap. You do all that work and it all ammounts to. . . "Well, you might have saved the world. Or you might be a rambling loony." A good twist ending, but somewhat unsatisfactory if you'd put a lot of work in it.
I'll have to somewhat agree, I've seen several Let's Plays of horror games where one of the main characters go crazy and end up in a nut house. It's kinda expected of some horror games once you know that they can use that kinda ending.
It also doesn't make as much sense in a contemporary setting. Back in Lovecraft's day, you could get thrown into an asylum just for mentioning something like this to the wrong person. But nowadays the only real way to get put in an institution (against your will) is to show that you are unable to take care of yourself or are a danger to others. Adam didn't really seem like he had completely lost it before the ending scene, in my opinion.

Crowley9 3 years ago 3
I'll have to somewhat agree, I've seen several Let's Plays of horror games where one of the main characters go crazy and end up in a nut house. It's kinda expected of some horror games once you know that they can use that kinda ending.
Hjmzx 3 years ago
I agree with those statements. Apparently that kind of ending is a staple on these kind of games.
Galdhon 3 years ago
It also doesn't make as much sense in a contemporary setting. Back in Lovecraft's day, you could get thrown into an asylum just for mentioning something like this to the wrong person. But nowadays the only real way to get put in an institution (against your will) is to show that you are unable to take care of yourself or are a danger to others. Adam didn't really seem like he had completely lost it before the ending scene, in my opinion.
