God is Love. The essence of God is faith, wisdom, honor, respect, health, peace, happiness, gratefulness, etc... Hell is described as fire, like jealousy, lust, envy, revenge, anger, bitterness, recent, this is hell. He uses fire to describe it. He's referring to your attitude or in other words your spirit. Hell is the absence of Love/God. He is giving you a description of what that will be like. The punishment you speak of is more or less the result of abandoning Love.
