Howd you pull off the side door trim?
1 step: when you open the door it has a 10 mm black plastick bolt
2 step:you can remove it, but you may crack the plastic clips, so you must remove the door card for safety........

I thought you have to sand the old paint down for adhesion....

you do, a very light sand to roughen up the surface. It's not going to be noticeable in a video on youtube. You don't have to sand too much either unless your old paint is peeling or in really bad shape.
