I wonder if you should raise your anvil a bit higher, I would think that bending over that much would kill your back. I keep my anvil at about knuckle level.
You'r going to have problemes If you keep Hammering like you do...With the thumb's up on handle....it give's you carpal tunnel and even tennis elbows...AND the Anvil is to low....you must be able to stand up and to rest you'r knukles on its face as you are standing like if you where in "Guarde a vous" ....aside from that nice Forge!
@TheTurmoilTbh the hand he is using to handle the metal is covered, the other hand is used for the hammer... basically no heat transfer from metal to hammer
@Istojataachatearme (just got into this stuff a few days ago myself but) no it's the initial quenching of the blade when the whole of it is red hot to bond the carbon into the metal
@Sindorai the charcoal is the main source, i think. like the combustion of charcoal releases carbon in the smoke that is absorbed by the molten metal that is reinforced when hammered. right?!
@karkrashful Yah that sounds about right, I havent been looking into it but yah that in combination with the quench will keep that carbon in there. However the metal maybe already have a carbon element to it like 1060 and in that case it just receives more from the coal
wow you are very well fit. along with most blacksmiths ive seen. i guess u need to be in order to take the pressur. i'll never be a blacksmith, because of that hehehe
Everyone has there own personal preferences on anvil height, but it'll save your back to get one more stump and bring the RR track up to you. I started off the same way and my back just couldn't handle it anymore. You can also just build a box and fill half with rock and fill in with quick-crete. However, if it works for you by all means go for it . Happy forging

How to you get the fire that hot?
kirkman667 5 months ago
@kirkman667
It is don by blowing air into the fire. you don't need a lot of air to get the fire up to forging temp.

So the fire and the hammering is what makes the carbon get into the iron right?
