  • This is probably from 1949, when the network had recently added Washington, D.C. to its lineup of affiliates carrying the show. The "test pattern" title was based on the fact that most NBC stations weren't carrying any afternoon programming until 5:30pm(et), when "HOWDY" appeared, and most kids saw a local station's test pattern on their screens before the show.
