Hints include what looks like the Forward Unto Dawn drifting towards the planet, and Installation 00 orbiting a rocky, brown moon, which in turn is orbiting the planet in question.

In Ghosts of Onyx it was shown that they went to the shield planet from Onyx, so it wasn't necessarily Onyx, but they could have transfered to this shield planet, which I belive, but don't quote me cause it's been a while since I've read it, is like the rings where the ground is on the inside, but unlike the rings this one is enclosed. I'm hoping for this because there's more spartans in there!

What I'm saying if you got confused is that The Shield Planet might be away from Onyx.

The real question here is not "will there be a Halo 4" but will the story continue beyond Halo 3, or is this the end of the entire Halo saga, with other materials being mere tie-ins?

It would make sense that Halo 3 is the end of the Halo story, but it would be interesting to see Master Chief taking an exploratory role instead of what he has done before.

The real question about the legendary ending (for me anyway)is that is that scene with the planetoid even canonical?

Or is it simply some silly easter egg or a red herring to get people speculating and hyped up for nothing?

I would lean towards the latter. It reminds of the hugging scene from Halo 1.

Halo was a trilogy, and things like Halo Wars, Chronicles etc. ar just side material filling in the gaps.

Yeah i know, The doctor that invented the Spartans is also trapped in there. If you look at the Terminals, you can also see that the game is refering to Onyx, which makes it possible that, that planet could actually be Onyx.

Well, as far as I've understood, the massive detonation from the ring made the portal unstable, so only one part of the spaceship managed to go through, while the other part got cut away from the other part. That happened because the portal collapsed.
