HELL YEAH BRING ON THE LEARNING!!!!! IM LOVEING IT, IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO SHOW ME THINGS FOR AGES!!!!! MORE VIDEO PLEASE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK :)
@suprajames1 racing line makes you drive artificially, and I have no idea what you mean by speed through corners. If you really want to be a great track day driver, turn the line off and when your ready, turn the assists off. I hope your no a 12-year old because that's how you sounded when you typed.
This all really sounds good but abit quick and brief. Going into more detail on setups and LSD in particular would be a great help and also the tell tale signs I should be looking for when deciding on changes to my setup. Thanks a lot Leo, I think in 2011 you are gonna be a big help to me.
No console racing game is going to really prepare you for actually driving a real car on a real track. I can vouch for that. It's a great "simulation" of the experience, but still very much removed from the real thing. It's like the difference between masturbation and having actual sex.
what a wrong concept of racing sport, plus jackie steward is a legend? yes he was but Ayrton Senna is more legend than him , Juan Fangio, Alan Prost, Nigel Mansell,Nelson Piquet..
I think there are good points here, the key with the games/sims is to understand that there will be elements that can't be reproduced by the game -- mostly feel. I have many, many students who use the games to give them an idea of where the track goes and then once at the track they can add to that foundation. Anything that keeps you in the game is good and getting out onto the track as much as you can is key!
I suppose this would go under the "anticipate" category that you mentioned Leo, but patience is another big thing. I don't claim to be a big-time racer, or pro sim racer for that matter. I race alot on Forza 3 and the biggest issue I run into is people getting to impatient or loosing their cool when they are being closely tailed, or are trying to pass someone, which usually ends up in the grass or tire walls either way. Just tossing that out there...
@ThreeDaysOfDan I never really learned how to drive, its just something that came naturally. I've race only once in my life (a track day at Mid Ohio a few years back), and I've played plenty of so-called "racing sims" in my time, and not a single one of them comes close to how the real thing feels. Besides, my comment was not directed towards the physical realism of racing, but the competitive aspect.
Pretty good stuff Leo! I feel this really helps for new guys just starting to do some weekend racing, on or off the track. More details on those topics would be cool to watch!
I'm all for ten episodes, each concentrating on one of the ten key points mentioned. That or allocate half of each of the next ten segments to them. It's good stuff to learn, even if you already "know" half of it. Thans for the Cap'n Slow and Sir Jackie video, too.
2:38 i was very privileged to see the Eagle MK III, this motherfucker puts out 700+ hp from a 2.1, 4 banger. shits fucking ridiculous, couldn't hear it roar tho haha
more Leo doing more race science and breakdowns and theory! so nice to see an experienced, smart and articulate racer discuss the sport and share information the way he did in this episode.
I wish there was more of this kind of stuff out there. Maybe there could be an episode dedicated to each of the subjects that Leo briefly mentioned to us all.
by far the best shakedown episode EVER!! I'm more into how to race, than about racing but thats all fine. But i have a question, by "sim line" do you mean the driving line that shows you the braking points and accelerating points in a sim racing game???
I say give us more in each area. I really think that even someone who has a passive interest in racing can get a lot out of knowing what a racer's mindset is- and as a result, they can better appreciate what goes into getting the most out of a car.
- i wish you guys make a whole new show just about this cause its really nice! one thing about race lines dont turn it off if you're not confident about the track. turn it off when you know where all the break zones and exit zones are.
-another thing be respectfull to the other driver. its interesting fact that poeple think that racing is very agressive, overtakeing or blocking whenever. block once and let the guy overtake if he's still too fast thats the rule.
Wow, is all i can say Leo. Thanks. That top 10 list had a couple golden nuggets in there for me. Thanks a bunch! I really like what you did here in this video. i think more is in order, but maybe you need to set aside its own time. I need racing news from shakedown, but separate videos like this would be great too!

great i favored this to learn how to set up my car great wisdom coming from some one who actually races unlike alex and jf talking about racing cars they have never driven on tracks they haven't even seen in real life
I don't think SIMs can ever replace real driving. The car physics may be translated properly, but I drive with real world instincts too. For example, karting. You somehow also feel understeer/oversteer/etc with your body. I don't think you can get those in SIMs. Sure, you can train reflex times if you use very good steering, pedals, etc, but to race you need to be physically fit to maintain a good pace.
But what the hell, might even work. But you can't totally replace real hands-on experience.
Well obviously tire grip levels and wear levels vary massively depending on the track surface, track condition, tyre material, tyre construction, tyre pressure and the vehicle dynamics, not to mention driving style.
If you wear fronts or rears quicker then you might want to adjust brake balance to compensate for that. i.e. if rears are more worn, move the bias forwards. However if tire wear is largely the same front and back, you wouldn't adjust brake bias, you'd just be gentler.
I've heard a lot of this before and watched the JMandJS video again. Playing GT I can't help but blip the throttle part way through long turns (over 180 degree).. and occasionally tap the e-break for more turn in.. doing it wrong?
Would love to hear your thoughts on TC, ABS, LSD and any other driver aids. (Does LSD count as a driver aid?)
If you do run out of racing material in the off season, you're probably well placed to talk engineering.
Please we need more of this kind of advice or at least I do. Knowledge is all powerful and then actions are next. I think that this game does the education of driving a car fast around a track has been done brilliantly. The mindset of a fast driver. can't get any better than that can u?!
