I have a home series briggs & stratton special trimmer (circa 1940s - 1950s) that a guy wants to buy. It runs great, but I don't know what it is worth. Do you have any idea what the value may be?
@motorhead69100 I wish I knew, but being a 40's or 50's model will make it desirable to collectors. There are lawn mower collectors websites out there. That would be a good place to start. ;)
It's actually a TRIMMER. Also known as Trimmer of Fresno, California Trimmer, and most recently Eastman Trimmer. I just completed a FULL restoration of a vintage version (Profesional 25') and the clutch lever is exactly the same ("push" style). The "flip" version levers were introduced I believe in the 1980's. Trimmer has been around since 1935. There were two versions of the 20" such as yours. A belt driven, and a chain driven. Yours is the better of the 2 (chain).

Thats not a home model, home models had a flip lever, this one has the push. This is the professional 20" McLane reel mowers are junk, stick with cal trimmer.
i have a few small briggs motors like this. i rebuilt a 3 horse horizontal shaft engines identical to this one for a small go-cart and they are the best small engine ever built in my book

Thanks Chico! It's one tough bugger, I know that much! ;) Now that I have my 2-cycle Lawn Boy, I plan on pulling this one apart and restoring it too.

I have a 20" Mclane mower. They don't hug the ground as well as the Trimmers.

I'd like to restore this one if I ever had the time....
I see the Mclanes come up for sale occasionally, congrats on the score!...
I don't know enough to be able to tell the home from the commercial models. I knew it was the smaller one. Thanks for the info!

McLane reel mowers were also sold by Sears and Montgomery Ward under their own names.

TRIMMER is #1! and always will be. Accept no others! McClane, Tru-Cut etc.

I have one just like it, almost finished restoring it.

I believe it. As old as this one is, it still runs smoothly and starts with the first pull nearly every time.
