Hi all, I'm Dan Hutter the owner of Our DJ Talk, the site mentioned in this video. Just wanted to say thanks for the shout out Mike. Ben's a great guy with way toooo much knowledge about cables, lol. Everyone is welcome to stop by we're a great group over at Our DJ Talk.
DMX cables are made to transfer data and XLR cables are made to transfer audio. If you use a XLR cable as a DMX cable, there could be data loss between the DMX controller and the light fixture. It is NEVER ok to substitute one for the other because DMX cables are only made for data between lighting fixtures and XLR cables are only made for audio.
@abbeylanedj Sometimes a DMX cable might not actually have DMX printed on it, but instead it may say Data. Just look for one of those words usually, DMX or Data.
@abbeylanedj Some DMX cables will say RS-485 on it, or, DMX, Digital or Digital Laser, Etc. On the other hand, if it says "low noise audio" or "mic" or "audio" it is not DMX. There are a few exceptions.... Thanks, Mike

How do you tell the difference in the cables if they're not in the packages?

@abbeylanedj, All "professional" cables will have text printed on them.
