  • very nice cover, lot's of good effort.

  • This is great do you guys tour?

  • The new Beach Boys!!

  • This really visualizes how much work was put into this piece of music

  • You guys deserve better than those Shure mics.

  • Are those tape-wound strings on the electric bass? Or at least flat-wounds? I need to put those on one of my basses for the authentic 1960s tone...

  • Bravisimo! ...

  • awesome...it must be so much fun to record a song with your group

  • As I've said so many times, The Fendertones are simply amazing, & deserve far greater reco0gnition. As a true BB's Fan since Fall of '62, " Surfin Safari", I know the genius behind this music, & you guys are note perfect, spot on! And Ohhhh yes, the drop-dead total babe playing the violin completes this Vid. Whoever she is--OMG!!--- Wolfsky9

  • Fantastic! A spot-on recreation of all the original arrangements! My only complain? No Cantina scene!

  • @monoterrific If it' missing the Cantina part than it's not spot on.

  • Incredible! I've always loved this song. What a great version you've done, really fantastic!

  • And how did you get Matt Damon to conduct? LOL!

  • Stunning! Wonderful! The only thing you failed at was taking a well-deserved bow at the end!! :-)

All kidding aside, I'll bet Brian himself would be thrilled with your living room accomplishment. Again congratulations!

  • Great work, these guys are Fantastic.

  • OH MY GOD!!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I swear I am listening to the Fabulous Beach Boys - Circa 1966.

    Awesome job!

  • I have been a devotee of the BB for more than 40 years, and I have never heard such beautifully true-to-the original renditions of BB music as I have with the Fendertones! You've successfully captured the vocal complexity and instrumentation perfectly ... I've been sitting her slack-jawed wondering why I never ran across you guys before. Awesome, awesome work! As an amateur musician, I have an understanding of how complex the BB tunes are. Kudos for doing it right!

  • these youngsters go a long way in restoring my faith that their generation knows music,harmony,tone,arrangement....congradulations.....I really did'nt think you had it in you.

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 Lol, listen to Grizzly Bear and Arcade Fire. Music is alive and well. It's just not on the radio and tv.

  • Especially the first part is very, very impressive. It sounds like a Gregorian church choir, really, really beautiful

  • Love it. The only thing I want to hear louder is the scary harpsichord-type part :)

  • it's absolutely awesome but don't think it's live - why pretend it is? Top top work guys

  • @stephemf Actually, it is.

  • @edwinherder Which is why your rendition is so incredible. It also speaks to the genius of Brian Wilson, who will go down as one of the greatest musical composers of all time.

  • @edwinherder - thanks for the info. If so, it's even more impressive I congratulate all those who made it happen. It just sounds so mastered, mixed and well reverbed/recorded that to my ears it doesn't sound properly live. Even down to a more static/white noise sound on the "dit dit de dits" before "how I love my girl". Surely this was done post-performance?

  • @stephemf it's live alright

  • EXCELLENT!

The lead voice is very near Brian or Al's voice. A true labor of love for the MASTER.

    :o)

  • The benchmark for BB covers-none better

  • Are the Fendertones ever ever going to do another gig? Absolute shame if they don't!

  • these guys playing the entire SMiLE on tour would be like the 2nd coming of Jesus.

  • After watching Brian and his group do these songs on SMiLE and then listening to these guys -Wow! I know Brian created it and did it amazingly well. These guys perfected it. Their other BB covers are equally as good. Bravo!

  • Big ass sandbox - heh.

  • these guys need to be touring, what a performence,i have seen there other songs and boy am i happy please please please somebody sighn these oh so talented artists to a recording contract and spread the joy...fantastic

  • I am speechless. First video I watched was God Only Knows, and THAT blew me away, but it's only gotten more amazing with each one I've clicked on. I can't stop smiling.

  • brilliant

    period.

    jctoronto

  • I've always loved the Beach Boy's, I'm 62 and grew up with there music. all I can say is that these bunch of Collage guys definitely got the Beach Boy sound sound down right, and not recording all kind of tracks like Brian Wilson use to do to make the sound he wanted. Great job all of you guys, and is there a Fendertone CD out there I can get.

  • This guys, lifts my heart a mile high,y`all deserve universal recognition for your work and Brian should really comment on what has already been said on here, "brilliant" better than the Wondermints by a long shot, keep going guys, come over here to "Bonnie Scotland" you will go down GREAT

  • Very well done!

  • you gotta love that this shit is done in a living room... all it needs is a big ass sandbox lol

  • These guys are killing me. Is this a put on or some kind of hoax? This is just too fucking good! Where did they get the individual charts for the various instrumental and vocal parts? Are they doing this for money or for love? This is just amazing. Astounding. Why haven't I heard of them before? I keep thinking maybe its a put on or something because it just seems too good to be real. I didn't think younger people even cared about this music.

  • Won-won-wonderful!

  • The skill and perfection that went into this is mindblowing. Well done. Please do more, come out West, do originals, whatever, but keep on doing. Superb.

  • The performance is superb and the arrangement brilliant! Exceptionally well done.

  • Since I first discovered this video, I've seen it literally dozens of times. I never cease to be amazed by it, no matter how often I see it. :)

  • @Javier23gol You are right and wrong. According to Edwin's notes above they did 5 takes. The video is editedbut the soundtrack is "live", obviously the best of the 5.

  • Imagine the hours Brian took to create this song originally, and then to have a group do it in 5 takes!!! Amazing! The Wondermints have nothing on these guys!

  • @GREGMCKEE This is a concert not a recording session ;)

  • @GREGMCKEE Yea but here is only one session maybe they tried like 10 times and this was the good one ;)

  • Imagine the hours of recording that Brian would have done to achieve the original version of this song, and these guys do it all together in one take??? amazing! The Wondermints have nothing on these guys!!!!

  • How dare you be this good! Perfect.

  • amazing! you really should send brian a copy of this video

  • Holy shit.

  • You guys just get better and better....this is absolutely AWESOME!!!!!! Unbelievable tribute to the great BW, what more can I say?

  • Holy Cow! Where can I see these guys?

  • This is just wonderful! Rendered with such love and respect for the original. What a creative challenge! I consider myself a new fan of the Fendertones!

  • I've been listening to the Beach Boys since they first hit the charts and I have a comment that many will take offense at, but here goes. Mike Love sang not just many lead vocals but also the bass lines on the Beach Boy recordings and his vocals completed the unmatched sound of the Beach Boys music in a way that no one has ever been able to equal. It is Mike's vocals no less than Brian's, Carl's, Dennis' or Al's which make the Beach Boys sound the superb musical legacy which it always will be.

  • That was amazing.

  • Ok, OK, here I go again--this is vocal mastery, & these young people should be so proud of this! And oh yes, that drop-dead cute girl with the long pony tail--& jeans. Ummmmm--she kind amakes this vid, to be honest. Wolfsky9

  • stunning rendition! What a beautiful collection of instruments and voices. My group is working on a tribute concert now and just started rehearsing H & V.

  • I wished I had more than 2 thumbs! brilliant

  • I never heard the ending with the strings. A nice transition from the strings to the horn.

  • What a find! Amazing . Such dedication and talent!

  • How much fun is this? Well done to all involved...

  • these guys are just the coolest thing I have seen all week. Commenting here after watching Little St Nick and California Girls. Just amazing.

  • Man, these guys should try to perform all SMiLE, so we should finally know how it would really be if it was released in 1967, these guys can make exactly the same voice as the Beach Boys that time.

  • man i want to hear all the classic beach boy songs by this extremely talented bunch... where's Don't Worry Baby.. etc... simply amazing!!!

  • My God, Poof and another notch in my life is completed by musical talent.

  • Insanely good...the end is like The Beach Boys meets The Sting. This one goes straight to Favorites.

  • Where's the Cantina section??????????

  • @bibbler227 Half wanted to do it, half didn't. Left it out to get it done quickly, ultimately most everyone wished it had been included:(

  • Wow! The only one who could do it better is Brian Wilson himself.

  • I love this

  • This is a masterpiece.

  • I didn't know Jim Carrie's sons were so talented :)

  • If only they could perform all of SMiLE.....if only.....

  • Awesome the more I listen to it, and I hear there are other videos waiting to be put on The Tube ,,,,,, Hurry Up, please Ed ..... thank you Don B.

  • Hands down the finest Beach Boys tribute outfit ever! It's hard to imagine the amount of hard work that went into recreating the sound and details of a complicated arrangement that only Brian Wilson could have invented. These people are amazing. Brian Wilson should have these super talented people behind him. I love the Wondermints, Brian's backing band, but this blows them away. You can feel the love!!!! Bravo!!!!

  • BRAVO!!!

  • OMG! How the hell did I not know of their existence!? Amazing!

  • Whoever she is, can they please make the really cute violin player--the one with the blonde pony-tail & blue jeans--an honorable Fendertone? Drop-dead cute!! Wolfsky9

  • Wow!

  • This is simply magnificent

  • I can't get enough of them...it's every night I peek again and again.

  • I do not know how this can be so good. I mean, it's impossible. Yet, here is is. I am speechless, but glad to have seen/heard it. More Fendertones, PLEASE

  • If "Glee" ever did a Brian Wilson episode - these guys would HAVE to be on it.

  • If "Glee" ever did a Brian Wilson episode - these guys would HAVE to be on it.

  • our prayer...i can't tell the difference between this and the original. amazing job guys!

  • These guys are just awesome and their ability to replicate Brian and the boys is just amazing. Brian's current band are brilliant. This lot equally so.

  • stoned perfection

  • flawless

  • Cover versions don't get better than this, not even when Brian attempts it. Astonishing.

  • Excellent cover here. Totally agree with you Wolfsky9. Hope she appears in my dreams before she does in yours. Thanks for pointing out the only visually redeeming segment of this excellent song.

  • Ok, OK I guess soomeone has to ask, so it'll be me--who's the incredibly cute violin player--with the pony tail?"? Very, VERY, CUTE!! Hey, someone HAD to ask! Wolfsky9

  • Knowing as I do so very well just how complex this music is--again, Fendertones, you are simply awesome. please, keep up the great work. Maybe we'll even hear you do " Keep An Eye On Summer? " Wolfsky9

  • Great version ,but think how great the beach boys were to actually compose and sing this first time round ,they had no one to copy ,think about it !!

  • this is really good

  • if I had the possibility to stand in a living room surrounded by wonderful artists and playing a beautiful song without any mistakes, I would cry

unbelievable, I have watched this video a lot

  • Great. Perfection. Rates a 10. 'Nuff said.

  • @Robdrums69... Your right that some notes are flat right at the end of that first part... But all the parts bend so simaltaneously that I wonder if it's a slight issue with uploading to Youtube... And call me crazy but that part sounds so cool to me. Sort of like an old warped record.

  • Bryn Athyn students/alumni/faculty

(college 20 miles N of Philadelphia)

    -liberal arts, etc.

red shirt singer: Chad Odhner, currently w/ Fresh Cut Salads, newspaper, activist and lots more..

obviously all perfectionists,,like Mr Wilson and friends in the day.

**school likes to focus on rock legends year to year..

BUT, make no mistake, BBoys stuff is their calling.& obviously not afraid to tackle the tough stuff.

BBoys 50th looms, and these guys should be a large part of it!!!

    jctoronto

  • I love the way this is filmed round at someone's house, like a load of blokes on a stag night, where things have got out of hand. Next after attempting to replicate the most complex Beach Boys' work, they are planning to build a nuclear bomb. Having said that, I totally love this and the fact that I believe they pull it off.

  • am I the only one that hears flat notes in during the start of this???

maybe my ears are broken.. LOL

  • nope there are some flat notes for sure...but seriously its still extremely well done. I mean listen to the stuff the alto(or tenor 1s) are singing...really way up there in the attic of the falsetto

  • wow so awesome

  • great!!! how long did you guys practice this song?

  • Love this! But I'm curious why you guys decided to leave out the Cantinia seuqence.

  • everyone who is a Beach Boys fan knows Brian would record the vocals twice on the left and right channels (8- 10 voices) and the instruments down the middle. That's what they are trying to recreate here. No tech advantage that I can see. Period instruments and even some of the mics are vintage. Let's not knock this incedible effort that truly delivers a stunning sound. How they were able to organize all of this is amazing.

  • Contemporary Benedictine Monks would be remiss if they failed to include BW's incredible vocal arrangements in their repertoire.

  • @THeMaskedBlogCritic

Actually better than the Beach Boys! even Brian's own rendition

  • @pocketcharts12 it's great, but no. no it's not.

  • @pocketcharts12 No, it's not.

  • Go on a tour. Please.

  • The Fendertones are using period instruments wherever possible, they are singing live, using 7,10,15 voices instead of studio techniques of doubling or multi track dubbing. Except for uploading digitally to the web, where is the tech advantage?

  • @coachnbluesnc Dude: Where do these guys work out of? I want to write about them. Or, at least see them! PG

  • hoyl shit. that was awesome.

  • WOW! absolute perfection. dave Maclean

  • Sent shivers up my spine. Bravo.

  • Wanna hear something blasphemous?

I think this is better than the original.

  • It does sound good, but rememebr the original did not have the advantage of the technology used here.

  • wow this is awesome, sounds so authentic, i cant imagine the amount of time and effort ,not to mention money, this must of taken to put together,

    well done to all involved

  • Total Respect to you guys.

I`m a BB and Brian Wilson fan since late 60s.

This is as near the real thing as is possible.

  • FANTÁSTICO!!!!

  • pure love for brian's music is what that was....incredible!

  • AWESOME!

  • Thank you

  • Thank you

  • now that's eerily close :)

  • Can I get the specs on the drum (mics) please!!!??

  • No "Cantina" section?

  • Insane. This may be one of the most difficult pop/vocal performances ever to cover. And, they nailed it--complete with all of the subtleties, pulses, toots, and tweets. Fantastic.

  • Nice arrangement.

  • The absolute BEST BB's cover band.

  • if brian would see this, he would change the band:)

  • Bravo !!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like cats

  • It feels so good that these young people honour one of the greatest song writer ever in this way!

    Thank you for sharing this!

  • You can tell that these guys really respect the music and the creator.

  • Stunning. Just stunning. The attention to detail is beyond obsessive. Kudos to all involved.

  • God! Its like the tapes Brian claimed he threw away (which i have, through file sharing years ago). This is even better than The King's redone version in '06.

    Have they recorded Smile?

    Joey

  • This is the new generation of classical musicians, performing the composer's works with utmost accuracy and reverence. God bless them and may they inspire others to do same.

  • Brian would shit if he heard this. These guys are ridiculously good.

  • Brilliant!

  • Best BB cover on you tube!

  • Esto es INCREIBLE; AMAZING; FANTASTIC...

    WOOOO HOOOOOOO

    VIVA LA MUSICA!!!!

  • I agree man! It's not just a song. Anyway they did a great job.

  • A perfect perform. These guys have amazing voices!

  • Absolutely Fantastic ... they reproduce the brilliant sound of the Beach Boys to perfection!!!!

    Thank you for posting!!!

  • Brian Wilson should do a final world tour...with the Fendertones. I would pay £100 for a ticket (NO £200 !!!)

Even the name is fitting...Brian Wilson and the Fendertones !!!

  • Totally agree ...

the name has a ring to it!!!

  • tour?cd?press releases, anything? these guys are going on my blog...just f-ing incredible! more, more and more!!!!!!

  • AWESOME!

  • these guys should re-record the re-recorded Smile! class! Cheers

  • Little St Nick was done one night in late November '07, just to get everyone together after 3 years. Heroes and Villains was recorded in Feb. '08. It's in the youtube video notes. This "band" has no affiliation with any college. The Fendertones have only done Beach Boys/Brian Wilson music. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, CCR etc are something totally unrelated.

  • Thanks for the information. I've deleted my guesses from the above posts. From the looks of the comments here, the Fendertones have a lot of admirers. It's nice to have a bit more information. Guess I wouldn't make a good detective.

  • wOw~

    Incredible... who are these guys?!?

  • congratulations ! fendertones and friends, what a marvellous job you do on this most challenging of modern musics. you are to be praised for your dedication and achievement!

more power to you all, from a long time serious Beach Boys fan who kept the faith when it was most untrendy to do so.

    wordofgord

  • i think the bar for covers on youtube has been raised some.... now where did i leave my orchestra? :P

  • Very good. Awesome job!

  • superb!

  • I've made a couple of comments regarding the Fendertones and Roger Joseph Manning Jr.(Jellyfish). This is ridiculous in that both have the Beach Boys as major influences to their music, both original and covers. This piece here is scrumptious and is oozing with delightful earcandy(must agree)can also be compared to Jellyfish's "Hush" off their Spilt Milk album. Roger's "Till We Meet Again" is another piece of delightful vocal magic that any Beach Boy fan must hear. Buy Solid State Warrior!

  • Also check out "In the Name of Romance" off of RJMJ's Land of Pure Imagination release to hear more of what I'm talking about.- He plays and sings every note!

  • thanks to the fendertones for this amazing performace, has helped me greatly in arranging the vocals for my own final degree performace of this song, although i wont be able to surpass this version!
