I understand you point of view, However i think you have a misconception of what the Ego is. When somebody refer as killing the ego, he perceives the ego as what it really is. A filter induced by trauma and other external factors such as shame. The ego puts what it wants to forget or what could hurt the physical immage in the subconscious an bury it there. It is supressing febad feelings, experience and such. It is a barrier to the subconscious we need to explore before finding our true self.
Yes, I went through this thing of the ego trying to destroy the ego, it's been very painful.
