I was in my mid teens when the first ever episode was aired. I love the original theme tune. Like others have said it is dark and percussive but with overtones of joy. Also, I remember this set the mood coz just after the first show I had to go and pick my pissed dad up from up the road....lol...it was misty and quiet and ominious...meh
I like the original scale model shots used in each chapter way more then the CG they replaced it with in the rereleases/Netflix version... I don't mind the opening redux though. It's like Star Wars. All of that hard work the original FX crew put in is not even seen by the current generation...
Dont get me wrong, the intro they use later and the theme are iconic, but the horn? the thunderous drum and the twinkly piano? these perfectly accompany the atmosphere of the show of how lonely and small you are in space. Zooming out from Lister in the spacesuit until he's just a speck is, i feel, no coincidence
sends shivers down my spine every time i see this intro, shame this red dwarf was badly damaged, the cgi red dwarf can not even hold a candle to this model.
The Sun Newspaper confirmed today that Red Dwarf is indeed returning . . . . but the bad news is, we have to wait until next year just to watch it, arggggggggggggh !!!!.
Filming of Red Dwarf X [ technically X if one conciders 2009's Back to Earth as IX ] begins this month according to an announcement made by Craig Charles on Radio last year, including an eleventh Series afterwards perhaps, all i can say is, fan-SMEGGING-tastic !!.
It sure looks like Lister in the suit. Anyway, I am getting my 13 year old son into Red Dwarf. I started with series 6 thinking that the technology in the show might be too old for him to get into, surprising we are now down to series 3 and he still enjoys it. But thats it I am going straight to 7 and 8 after that. If he still wants to we will try 1 and 2 to end the show.
@Beale947 the common fate of all SF studio models. I saw on the DVD extras that the replacement was destroyed accidently when it fell out of its cradle while being moved by a forklift. Might be the reason why the last couple of series where set on starbug.
I agree, this is the best opening for the series. It grounds you in the fact that while they're off goofing around, the grim fact is that Lister may be the last person alive... until they fix that too.
The sense of doom juxtaposed with the comedy created something unique - then they went and screwed up the formula. The Easter specials were atrocious and would have been helped with some canned laughter.
@andyjimbo2006 IMHO it was perfectly and apropiately dark for this series .. Not only Lister was alone.. but the Red Dward was 3.000.000 years away from earth
This is so epic, too bad they changed it. I guess it makes sence though, its too dark for the actual show, so i guess they canged it to fit the bubly light heartedness of the show, even if it does have extremly dark undertones(as it kinda shows in this series opening)
@itishere You can't have a situation-comedy without properly defining the situation, and as much as I love the guitar-tastic season 3+ intro, this darker music is much more suited to the desperate premise of being the last surviving human, 3 million years from Earth.
I couldn't be without either intro, but I have a special fondness for the first.
I've seen red dwarf for the first time about a year ago. It is one of the best tv series I've seen in a long time. I can't say it's the best but it is among my favourites. I like this "cheap" old shit. :D
The humor is fantastic. One of the few tv shows where every character is unique and never boring.

Ahh, there's the organ. I was worried I had heard it in a remix or something when the other version on youtube didn't have it.

For some reason this always made me think of the Wallace and Gromit shorts. British comedy was way more bleaker back in the 80s.

I keep wishing that someone would do some kind of epic pipe organ/orchestral remix of this theme. IT WAS AWESOME. I was annoyed when they changed it.

Interesting someone working on a film script requiring sheet music from Red Dwarf.
I am planning an underwater "spoof" on a well known sunken ship using the theme.
romaurie 1 year ago
Can anyone tell me where I can find sheet music or similar for this? I'm working on a film script and I need to know the notes.
I've always preferred this to the later theme. It fits the ship better; dull, a bit sinister, simple yet colossal.
