Parker was drunk as hell on this recording! He comes in late, plays off the mic and yet when he does come in STILL manages to sound amazing! This guy had mad skills.

Also, in my experience, you can be carried by your band. Thats what Howard mcGee and co. DId. To all: You can think about sh** but dont drink about sh-7. Thanks for that quote : Smitty Smith.
@Chuck98p7 It's generally agreed upon that he wasn't "high" during this recording, but rather horribly drunk. When Parker moved to California, heroin - obviously, his drug of choice - was far more scarce, compelling him to focus his abuse toward another depressant: alcohol. Hence the sloppiness you hear at times in this recording. But hell, let's be honest, the man still sounds brilliant.
@decus69 Mcgee is obviously a Dizzy inspired player ,I love the way he puts the notes together , Diz is one of my favorite musicians of all time ,so to hear this recording was a revelation . He seems to have no props that I have heard of , so I was just wondering why...
@LadyofWar1980 what a shame?!?! when some of these were rerecorded they were no where near as good. these are some of his most coveted recordings because it was true to him his style and his being.
@misledprops When I said "What a shame" I meant his state....not the song! The recording came out okay despite his condition but it sucks that he was in such bad shape.
@Chuck98p7 The story I heard was that these tracks were recorded in California where Charlie had no heroin contact. He had a terrible withdrawal and tried to make up for it with excessive amounts of amphetamines and liquor. The result was that he kept spinning or moving away from the microphone. When he got back to his hotel room he set it on fire. This led to his commitment to the Camarillo State Mental facility (and the tune "Relaxin' at Camarillo").

Howard Mcgee's playing is so sick ! He plays Dizzy better than the man himself on this recording! He is an unsung genius ...

Charlie Parker war prima! Es ist unheimlich schade, dass er so jung starb. Ein echtes Genie.

Charlie was high as hell on this track. He missed like the first couple of bars. If you pay close attention, its pretty effed up.
