I bought this album when it came out. I loved it! But to my surprise whenever I played it for my friends no one seem to get into it. I've not understood that to this day. This baby has more than held up over time. Truly a great album.
@rekterx with you on that. when i play it in my car friends usually say 'what is this shit?'. took me a few listens to get into it but i now turn to it often.
I can attest to the fact that Lodger was received ambiguously. At the time I knew a certain rock critic in a very US city. He told me that he liked Lodger but didn't want to write about it much. That's how it was received. Few hated it, as they had hated Pin Ups, lets say. But it went largely unnoticed.
I'm 52 now. As you get older, some of the music of your youth sounds adolescent. This doesn't. It's mature, complex and has a never to be repeated sound mix. A true wall of sound.
it's as much Belew's achievement as Bowie's, guitar playing as an art reached its peak in the late seventies, I feel. This is a good example, the solo at the end is impressive, to say the least...
I really think Bowie hit his peak with lodger... theres barely a weak song on the album.. and the songs are very relaxed and devoid of self consciousness.
A mish mash of brilliance ! "Rolling Stone" magazine called this album one of Bowies "weakest "..but wtf do they know? That magazine lost all credibility in the 70's. Thanks for posting FD08.
@johnmckinlay67 yes, they've had to eat their words so often, one would think that they would've just stuck to gossip and ads after the mid-70s. They've gotten so many wrong, on both counts. How many of 'the next big thing' have drifted into obscurity? I remember wasting $5 on a marshall crenshaw album because 'his crafting of songs was impeccable.' right. that was the last time i took the advice of a rock critic. well, at least it keeps otherwise unemployable people off the street.
Out of the "Berlin trilogy" of albums, Lodger is by far my favorite, also, this is one of my favorite off that album. I think I like this album alot because it sounds (to me) like a real prelude to one of my all time favorite Bowie albums Scary Monsters.
I think i read somewhere Belew's guitar work on this track is the result of bowie and eno recording him on a first take having never listened to the backing track. this is my favourite bowie track of all time.
True avant-garde rock. Intelligent lyrics, captivating, exciting, brilliant. No artist today can duplicate. noone has the intelligence today, bad educations, bad attititudes and petty conerns, its very tragic...
@jeancocteau1 Don't be so foolish. There are plenty of modern artists making music of the same quality, who are just as intelligent, are well educated, have a dedicated approach to their craft and deal with relatable subject matter. What's tragic is your ignorance of that fact. Have a nice day.
@nichoji Hey, I was wonderin' if you could give me a couple of the artist names who make similar music... Can't seem to find any in the pool of techno and pop music or metal... Thanks dude.
@shwinggum In terms of contemporaneous artists, I'd suggest Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Roxy Music and Television. If you're looking for modern artists who exhibit a distinct Bowie influence try: Suckers, Smith Westerns, TV On The Radio (Bowie actually provides backing vocals on their song 'Province') and LCD Soundsystem. These are all indie/rock artists, though (LCD SS are a bit dance-y). I'm afraid I'm not too knowledgeable about techno or metal. Hope you find something you enjoy!

"..the hinterland, the hinterland, let's all sail to the hinterland!" fantastic lyrics, yelled by a triumphant Mr Jones at the end of the track.

the guitar solo at the end of the song can only be described as, 'alarming'. one of Bowies his best songs.

This song is the most Neu! of his 'trilogy' songs and sounds cool. The Adrian Belew explosion of guitar is pretty cool, too.
