fighter escort was crucial to any air mission. Its finding a fighter that had the range to make it to and back. The mustang was the allies' solution to cutting their bomber losses.
The look on actor Kenneth More's face when he can't answer Susannah Yorks question 'Is he badly burned?' is a classic. Up there with Richard Todd at the end of The Dambusters.... 'I have to write some letters . . . . .'
'Come now, my friends. I am here to help, not chastise. Tell me, is there something I can give you that will turn the battle for us?'
'Yes Herr Reischmarshal - give me a squadron of Spitfires..........'
Wouldn't be half so funny if it weren't TRUE!!!! That character really DID say that to Goering - he confirmed as such when he was in jail during the Nuremburg war crimes trials.
@NobleKorhedron I was just confirming another post: that when Goering asked what they needed, Galland really did say "give me a squadron of Spitfires."
@wilmanric1: That was HIM?! :-O I couldn't tell who was who in this bloody film - I thought that was Molders or maybe a son/grandson of Ricthofen - I heard a relative of his fought in WW2.
@NobleKorhedron For some reason they changed the names of all the German pilots. Galland isn't named Galland; Priller isn't named Priller, etc. Maybe for legal reasons, or having to pay royalties, or something like that. **Sigh**. Most of the German pilots who survived the war were still alive when they made this movie.
the mighty german luftwaffe lost almost more then 30% of their Aircrafts in this battle of britain the english just not even 25% an they could reproduce or shipped new aircrafts from the USA again.
@garden2011city - think you need to read a history book. Spitfire and Hurricane were both British designed, made and in service, together with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine which found it's way into a number of other aircraft - including one called a, now what was it?????? Oh yes! The P-51 Mustang! The Cadillac of the skies! (with a Roller engine of course . . . . . . ;-) Ha ha!
As an American with WW II historical chops, I wholeheartedly agree with my British cousin, odkingmat, that we, the nation, had no skin in that game. That's not to take away anything that our valiant and gallant volunteers had accomplished. The Brits would never allow any form of invasion on that hallowed island.
There is no way the British were going to let the Germans conquer their island. They had absolute determination. And they were smart with the use of radar to concentrate all their assets only where the enemy was present.
Although the main commanders on both sides are shown I wonder why they didn't have Werner Molders, Adolf Galland for the german side, and Sailor Mallan/Ginger Lacey (amongst others) for the RAF
@JFDA5458 They didn't show any "real" pilots (like galland or Malan), since they didn't want to show any real squadrons. That had forced them to show only recreations of real fights and had hampered the diversity and drama.
"Falke" was loosely built on Galland and "Skipper" on Malan. It was Galland who in real life asked Göring for "a squadron of Spifires".
Best line in the film, when Goering asked what the Luftwaffe would like to help...and the German officer says"" Give us Spitfires!'' (something like that. Sorry, dont speak German...)
Suzannah York was completely unnecessary for the movie. In 1970 when I saw the film originally as a 10 year old boy I didn't like girls and thought the Germans should have dropped a bomb on her after the fall of France.
@duxforddixie thats a bit harsh isn't it, the WAAF's had there role to play in the battle as well, and to take a pot shot at her not 24 hours after her death.
@Prime4571, I have a problem with her role in the film. Why, in a movie more likely than most to attract young boys does an actress have to show her underwear? I love the flying sequences in the movie, but the marital 'drama' was not only a boring embarrassment, it illustrates perfectly how much contemporary society has become screwed up. As a work of art the Battle of Britain movie for me is a brilliant oil painting, with one blob of excrement on a corner of the canvas.
@specom; wrong, I love girls, I'm married to one. I have 4 kids and I am militantly homophobic.
I just harken back to an age when masturbation was considered a sin (real men don't need to do that) and girls were virgins until they were married. Call me old fashioned if you like. I don't give a damn.
Those german bombers had very inadaquet fire power by the looks to defend against fighters, what are those piddley looking machine guns they have? certainly not the mighty 50 cals that some of the US bombers had lol
Does anyone else think the women's roles in this movie are totally unnecessary and a bit irritating? I realize they had a function in the RAF, but I just don't care. It doesn't help the movie.
It sounds like the Georing is angry and all the Germans are shouting, but in reality Georging was lamenting not wearing his fancy pink boots and his emerald iron cross earrings for the occasion. The other Germans are calming him and whispering sweet and soothing messages in his ear.
The U.S. not being more involved during the Battle of Britain was certainly not our finest hour. Thank god the U.S. and U.K. were able to work together to help put down Germany. (Many discount-very incorrectly- the fact that the Soviet Union was the main reason that Germany was crushed) I consider the UK the best friend of the US and any enemy of the UK is our enemy.
@om996jo Absolutely no way could the USSR defeat Germany alone. Stalin lied to his people and say they defeated Germany alone but it was just that; A LIE. Could U.S. and U.K. defeat Germany alone? Negative. Many forget that Germany and the USSR were in bed together and divided Poland in 1939 (the reason the U.K. and France declared war on Germany) Stalin sat for a week in darkness when Germany attacked June 22, 1941. People forget that England was completely alone during the Battle of Britain
@om996jo If talking about WW2, the U.S. also fought Japan. Without the bombing of German industry and without the troops drained to face the U.S. and U.K., there is no doubt that Germany would have crushed the USSR. Also, the attack on the Soviets was delayed months because Hitler attacked the UK in Greece and Yugoslavia. Instead of a late spring assault, Germany attacked in mid summer. The extra two months before the winter that stopped the nazis would have resulted in a German victory.
@mattezyk69 p-51 mustang was really good in climbing and speed, but its weapon loadout was just crap, it still had those bad 12,7mm cannons during 1944. while their german enemy airforce had the BF-109K10 with a loadout with MK508 (50,8mm cannon) + a 12,7mm.
@freakasma The weapons load of a BF-109K10 (2 x 13 mm MG 131 (above the engine), 1 x 30 mm MK 103 (firing through the spinner), and 2 x 30 mm MK 108 (one in each wing). That weapons load was late in the war, on very few produced planes, and made to attack bombers. You obviously have never seen the power of an M2 .50 caliber machine gun. Rapid firing devastating weapon. German cannon fired way too slow. 6 x .50 caliber machine guns could blow ANY plane out of the sky. Gun cameras show it.
The RAF have several advantages: Attacking German aircraft had to Cross the English Channel from their airfields in France to reach their targets; the RAF pilots were much closer to their airfields. If german pilots were shot down over Britain and survived, they would be captured. If Raf pilots survived after being shot down over Britain, they can return to the Battle.
@haynes1776 But the Germans could also launch air-raids from France using fighter escorts due to the short distance, whereas British and US raids over Germany were too far for this protection.
@Martin958: Not after the P-51 was modified, they weren't!! The Merlin engine gave it the legs it needed to reach Berlin and return. The U.S. engines were all under-powered and used too much fuel for their own good, I.M.O.
@NobleKorhedron I meant during the time of the Battle of Britain, our fighters couldn't go all the way to Germany and back + fight. But true enough what you say for later in the war.
@Martin958: Eh, my bad. I didn't realise you were directly referring to this period. Which, considering what movie these comments are posted under was really kind of silly of me!! :-P
