I bought this album back in the days and sitting in a bar in Krabi in Southern Thailand I was thinking about this song, came back and found this, total brilliance mate, the images are something else and to see Garcia, Kantner and Slick et al, excellent, you have a real eye, thanks a lot and now I feel in need of a few more lemonades!!!
I got my first copy when I was 14 in 1973. You could still get good acid then. My copy was a little brown and floppier than a standard vinyl LP and looked freaky under a black light.
@NeebruM This is true - Pedal Steel is TYPE of guitar that employs a slide, but Pedal Steel Guitar is the accurate description. Garcia masted this very challenging instrument in unbelievably short time and displays a most creative use of it on this song - my absolute favorite track from this wonderful album. @ocnarfeara Great Video - thanks!
The best album by Starship - one of my alltime fav albums, still own it & still play it. Thanks for putting this song on....sure brings back great memories. think I'll go up on A Deck and look at them tonight.....*grin*
discovered this lp at 17 back in 84. every night after that i came home, went to my basement room, smoked and drifted. i still get goosebumps. this album is my spirituality, along with crosby's if i could only remember my name.
every note, every space between notes, every sound is perfect.
out in the pines at night, stoned or shrooming in the fall- priceless
Would stagger home and fall asleep at night with the headphones on, listening to this. Still have the original LP, and most of the groups other LP's too.
You have done an outstanding treatment of this well loved song. It is a stand out on you tube.
This album expanded my mind further than any other...there are others that are "close"... but - - Dear God....this was the key. BTW to @NickandSlick - try doing a Grace Slick tune at karaoke!! You will find that the girl had a range to beat all!!
I have always thought that Grace Slick is an absolutely under-rated talent, A great person and an incomparable singer and lyricist.after listening to this again i have realised that one of the thing i love so much about Grace is her unique piano playing. The moment you hear the piano there is absolutely no doubt who is playing.I could listne to Grace play without ever hearing her sing and that is saying a lot!!!
Favorite song and album. Paul Kantner still gives me chills. I my friends have a wake, please play for me. Cannot believe BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE was in a "cut out" bin. Bury my ashes to this music.
@brian1861 It was nominated for the Hugo Award for Science Fiction in 1971 but lost. But it was an achievement that it was even nominated acknowledging the real sci-fi element present in the work. I don't think there has ever or will ever be an album quite like it. One of my top ten and I like a lot of albums.
This album is the true meaning behind "Space Rock" as the Starship ascends into space on a stolen ship... misgivings as the crew prepare for the slingshot around the sun and head out of our solar system. Ocnar, thank-you for your beautiful video.. I love the shots of the moon as if they are traveling past... hippies starting a new life not on our planet but far beyond the stars. A friend of mine has jammed with Kantner and told me they all stopped sessions to watch Star Trek in the 60s.
@55kudu Thank you my friend. It would be fantastic if Paul stopped sessions to watch my video too :) It's great that you really enjoyed my work. The album is one of my favorites if not my favorite from all Airplane work as well as Crown of Creation. I had fantastic experiences listening to this album in very special and peculiar ocasions :)) Kantner Slick albuns had beautifull artwork . Thanks again.
@ocnarfeara Kantner would definitely dig this video alot and I will check out your other video. You are very creative like the Starship. I remember my friend Cathy Jenkins and I would listen to this album in 1970 and she thought it was so cool that they basically used piano and guitar and not all spacey stuff to convey their ideas and we were so impressed with the creation of XM. So cool. The album I think is more than we realize it to be... like it's magical or something. It's thriling!!
This one surely stands the test of time. It's Kantner's masterpiece and, since it has all of JA in it except for Jorma and Marty, it can be considered the last great Airplane album. Every song is special, especially this one and "A Child Is Coming" with its wonderful backing vocals by David Crosby. Man, it don't get no better than this!
@djohn4096 You truly understand and appreciate this masterpiece and that's what it is. It is so cool that the "Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra" (PERRO) are present as they are on David Crosby's first solo album "If Only I Could Remember My Name" released in 1970. Do you know that album, I'm sure you must. I love Crosby and followed him for many years. Stellar performer. Keep on listening, man!!
This is one of my favourite pieces of all time, listened to it the first time I ever got really stoned! Paul K signed my original vinyl a few years back, he's a trailblazer if ever there was one! Thanks Paul for all the good times:-)
I've been a blues player for forty years. I don't play anything that remotely sounds like this. But damn, this is my favorite album of all time. It takes me to a special place every time I hear it. When I die, maybe I'll get to visit that place for real. This album is the embodiment of pure joy.
@ocnarfeara Note quite Airplane/Starship realy, it was more of a side project as was the other Album, Sunfighter. Blows against the Empire was another side project for Slick/Kanter all fantastic albums non the less :)
@ocnarfeara Where did you get so many wonderful images of our solar system and the Starship players. I had to return to watch it again I love it so much. Good sound, too, That XM was such a mind blower when I was 17, all we had was Star Trek and 50s sci-fi most of which was monsters attacking us. This really made me feel like I left this planet in whatever form - corporeal or mind-altering. Take your pick. Thanks for keeping the spirit of this piece alive in the computer age.
@55kudu Thank you again my friend ...You're welcome..I found those images searching in webs like google images ,yahoo.. etc...Feel free to watch it over and over again heheh did you watch my first upload for that album? "Have you seen the the stars after Sunrise?" I mixed the instrumental intro to Have you seen the stars as a complementary end to Sunrise...
Rock msg music began changing my life with the Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man". "Blows Against the Empire" sped the process. Music has been the catalyst for many of my social and political ideas. Thanks for this hopeful tune and the video. Great job.
