When i was in 6th. gradr (12) age in san antonio, texas - all our class took a field trip to kelley air force base and toured the complete XC-99 airplane- most memorable to me was we could stand up and walked inside the wing-looking at all the inside of the wings, was amazing - I later in life became a commercial pilot for many years.-kids now just dont have the opportunitys like that anymore.!!
I said on the other video that we lived over the flight path of McClellen AFB. As a kid I could hear the plane coming in for a landing and go running out to the front yard. I still swear it cast a shadow as it flew over our house. I was quite the aircraft!
Absolutely incredible, Brian! Thank you so much for posting this video. Even though I'm sure I "saw" the XC-99 take off and land many times when daddy was flying it, and I was a baby, I sure can't remember those experiences now. Mama always said the XC-99 always seemed to take off in slow motion -- she was always worried it wouldn't get off the ground. Good to see that restoration is moving along at Wright-Pat.
I remember getting permission to have access to this plane when it was parked at Kelly Air Force Base San Antonio, TX back in 2001, Alone and looking for a B1 stand I got the chance to get inside and take pictures of it. It was such a mess and in really bad shape. I thought to myself that this plane needs to be restored and placed in the Smithsonian.
Convair sure could design and fly planes and then not be able to sell them! Best designers and engineers in the business coupled with the all time worst sales and marketing team.
Incredibly cool plane. The rare aircraft footage on YouTube is really exciting! In an old book I saw a still from a corporate film picturing the interior of the XC-99 done up as an airliner (a mock-up, of course). Has anyone ever seen this movie?
Whoa ! ! !....vertical stab WAY too small. Yikes !

The XC 99 is now at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton Ohio where it will be restored to its full glory in about 10 years.

NO WAY ^_^ Awesome. I've only been there like twice in my life, but that hillside in the background seemed familiar.
