Tyler Perry is a business man before anything.(he's about his money first) The Boondocks was not the first to pick on "Madea" it was actually The Cleveland Show. Everybody is picked on in Hollywood, that's just the nature of the business.
@gallyun1 Oh, I realize that ..but I targeted Boondocks for a reason ..I, also, just wanted to speak on the direction the show headed in (McGruder disappointed me)
With regards to the episode where Huey was talking about Reagan as the devil. First of, completely accurate statement. 2nd, the point of the episode is this, Huey dreamed of causing a riot among well-to-do whites just speaking truth to power. They just laughed it off. You can speak truth to power but it is pointless, as a) power knows truth b) truth's unpleasant aspects will be rationalized away by those who do not really want to deal with the implications of truth.
@Konform2zoidberg Tyler Perry has a pretty right-wing message behind a lot of his work, and that seems intentional. Precious; attack on welfare, faceless black male predator, light-skinned women of color saviors. Plus he does (implicitly) call for gun vigilantism in a number of his works. Any attacks by Macgruder have seemed to me to be more or less unintentional. R. Kelly episode could have applied to any celebrity trial involving whites. Plus seeing Cornel West fight was pretty awesome.
@Konform2zoidberg He did not write Precious, nor did he direct it ..He only gave support, considering that he supports any story, it seems, about abuse, being that he was a victim of abuse ..Now, I don't like nor support Precious, but I'm not gonna just write him off over that, cuz that's more of an emotional issue w/ him ...I just wish that he realized that Precious is, in no way, beneficiary to those who have suffered abuse..At least his flicks offer hope & resolution - Precious was pointless
@Konform2zoidberg Who said that I disagreed w/ Huey? But here's my point: WHAT HAPPENED TO HUEY? Oh wait - he's been replaced by his ignorant-ass lil' Brother and characters like "Thugnificent" ...McGruder's weak, and misleading...
@Lashid4u fair enough, he does seem to have compromised his vision for entertainment purposes and appealing to a market demographic. Could be worse though. He could have gone all South Park and gotten all preachy and up his own ass.
in my opinion i get what your saying but at the same time Huey is the representation of how the "educated young black male" tries to get the blacks together but is constantly ignored, im sorry but everything that happens on the boondocks ive seen in real life, especially the uncle ruckus thing
@markworlding Yeah, but considering that in real life, the Hueys are ignored (I know, personally), he had the power to let us hear his voice ..I DO believe that's how it was in his comics - we heard from Huey's point of view. This was supposed to be Huey's show, w/ supporting characters ...but the show became like so many other shows, where the most stupid character gets the most spotlight (The Simpsons; Good Times)
@Lashid4u i truly get what you are saying though and your right, but one thing i think you and i will truly agree on is the whole lil wayne dissing darkskin black women in his song right above it, thats something the boondocks should have come at lol. but most definetly the hueys of the world truly are ignored check out a rapper named "DEE 1" or "prince ea" and you'll see what im talking about.
Yes, I agree! Tyler Perry made his own fame and success without Hollywood. They came to him and not the other way around like the Boondock boy. I see that he's following a familar pattern that all wannabe rich black males have done. Remember, in order to be in the 'circle' of the powerful, you must follow their rules. Once accepted you are assigned a Handler. And the handler is usually someone from the U.K. A Wizard who knows the secrets of Low Frenquency and manipulation. (More).
Con't #2 - They decided approximately 15+ years ago they are going to do their best to crumble their number one enemy...that's the black race. Notice how the young suddenly gets divorced from their long time wives, take up with a skank-like woman and begin to dedicated their talents to embarrassing the whole of the black population? It's like their handlers say 'Chuck your old lives, I'm gonna give you a whole new one." And they do. Thus the writing of the new script begins...(more)
Con't #3- The handlers are very excited because they've finally found the piece that successfully crumbles the black community. They see that the most effective rounte to killing a people is to USE IT'S OWN PEOPLE to do it. The new black celebrity attacks his own people via the new script. He's up on the 'world stage' & behaves in a degrading fashion. He confirms all of the stereotypes. He degrades black women. He even gets whites & other non-blacks to join in. They think its cool (See YouTube)
Con't #4 - He's become one of a dozen of the industry's puppets destined to fall. With this way of life the new black male celebrity is pressured to become more and more sinister as he has taken an oath to serve the 'Low Frenqency energy' (satanist) They often turns to drugs just to be able to sleep at night. They keep going until his orders will destroy him. If he refuses, he is destroyed. So watch for his comic/animated toons to become even more toxic. He will soon crack. I'm waiting.
Con't 5 Final - The bottom line is that we are being attacked by a group of Low Frequency Satanist that relish in spreading death and destruction. They dieties they worship hate black people. We are of the Father and Mother God. We are creative, loving, & will rise when the rapture comes. They have found out that they will not and they do not want to rise without them. But we will. No matter how angry we get we must stay our compassionate loving selves. It's time to leave them. Goodbye devils!
@filmtress That's a little narcissistic. The black race is no one's number one enemy. No one is out trying to get you. Do you really want to know who is the number one enemy of black people? Black people. Everyone else is getting theirs. Why aren't you?
@filmtress lol Not before I give you a hug and tell you everything is going to be ok. I promise :). We'd probably get along if you weren't so pissed off! lol. If you look at my videos, I have much more melanin than those "light skinded" dudes in TP's garbage. Just sayin. Take care.
How many of us on this discussion went to a major college/university/community college? How many of actually know what we're talking about? Are you defending Tyler Perry because God said so?
@Lashid4u I honestly dont have a problem with tyler perry as a person. I respect him if anything but as a filmaker i don't. Hes only making movies he knows his fans will like since thats who pays the money for the jets. Can we have one tyler perry movie that isnt overly melodramatic with awkward lighting. The way he switches from comedy to serious issues is always awkward. Im sure he wants to branch off but cant because hes tied down to what people now expect from him.
@fraudster111 I hear you, but as an artist, I don't like people telling me what direction to go in w/ my art, just for the sake of giving "diverse stories", or pleasing a "diverse crowd" ..Perhaps he just said: This is the subject that I wanna do my movies on - he is in his RIGHT to do this ...It's about what YOU, as the artist/director want to express ..No one questions Stephen King on 90% of his films being horror flicks...
What is with this hatred of white people? They've done nothing wrong. It's your savior Tyler Perry and your holy ghost BET. No matter how hard Aaron McGruder tries to satirically depict the errors of the black community, somehow butthurt bigots find loopholes in the message he's trying to convey. I love women of all races ESPECIALLY my black women. Since they are being degraded to nothing by your savior and holy ghost, they're often looked at as "ghetto" and nothing more.
I wouldn't call it self-loathing, notice how militant huey is, but we do have our ish about ourselves, and the boondocks to me brings a lot of that about us to the forefront.
AAron is that Tragic Mullatto Paul Mooney refers to. He passes himself as black, but hates that he must claim that in order to get across his self loathing message. He is like the direct descendant of the cartoonist who made the strip about the black cat white dog in the 1920s? I don't remember his name, but Sis you have opened my eyes to Aaron's "true" message. Thanks for being A Revolutionary but Gangsta Real Black Girl. My allegiance is to you!
I don't mean any disrespect in my comments! You speak intelligently and have done your homework! Much respect from a midwestern brotha! Keep on keepin' on queen! :-)
Tyler Perry's "message" is coonery and nonsense. His movies are ALL THE SAME pointless classic bullshit. This man is nothing but a tool for social engineering. Stupid movies. Ignorant coonish stereotypes.........but the men are fab! I'm sure he agrees, too :-)
you go deep on this second part, again. i share the same sentiments and disappointments with on the lack of potential fulfilled with the huey character in boondocks, i would love to see it change. in terms of this kind of discussion being divisive, i have to disagree with you on that. whites have these types of polarisations on all manner of topics all the time but it is not presented as such. we need to see the real agenda here - this discussion is healthy because it makes us question ourselves
This is pretty much why I watch so little television. The choices, for the most part, suck. I can either watch complete coonery or if I do get some kind of good message the entirety of the experience ends up feeling like a pyrrhic victory because there's so much other stuff around the good that ruins it for me.
The same way I feel about the boondocks is how I feel about tyler's movies. Black folk (our image) take a beating in'em.
mcgruder is all of the characters, in some form or another. and mcgruder isn't the main writer on the show. there are two other writers i know of- a heavyset brotha and a light-skinned female. i'm sure at this point he just gives some approvals on scripts. it's not like he writes all the dialogue and draws every frame.
You are right on so many levels. I do watch this show for laughs and for discussion, however between with all the laughs & humor from controversy it has also desensitizes ( to make insensitive or make light of ) the issues.
As a gay black man I think Tyler Perry is like so many gay men in the black community. We are not accepted because black men have been portrayed as a warrior so the only safe refuge is the the church. My opinion is Tyler should come on out the closet and black people need to get used to having gays in our community. There is a reason why black women having the fastest growing HIV rate in the country and it isn't from drinking water. .
I agree the show is not the political forum that comic strip showed signs of being. But is the black community so beyond reproach that we cant laugh at ourselves?
White comics make fun of white media & leaders all the time.
Are we that uptight?
The biggest problem I have with the show is that they clearly throw out the N word excessively, but honestly if I walk outside to a urban 'hood I'll hear it just as much.So whats more sad that the show uses it, or that the show mimmicks its real usage?
@SLICENSLASH White people are also more likely to bash their parents, and make comedic parodies of old ladies being hit by cars and punched ...WHY must we always follow the ways of the "gentiles"?
I overlooked it when people criticized McGruder for the overusage of the N-word (cuz many of us commonly use the word). However, I think it's effed-up how he decides to diss the brotha so cruel, RIGHT AFTER many of us were proud, watching him receive the NAACP award.
This is my 1st time seeing this video, so I apologize for the delay in response. You know what I'm tired of from Us, which i think u hit upon, thats Us coming at each other on a public forum. I had a problem with a sista on the job once, and i tried to keep it "inhouse", but she made such a public spectacle of the whole situation to whereas (other people) stepped in and she got relocated. This is some p-nk sh-t!! Excuse my words. Spike was right about one thing, " We can do better!"
I've been criticizing Aaron McGruder for a few years now about the same things you pointed out in this video. I started watching it to see a cartoon that was all black. But after the first season I was turned off from all the negativity.
The Boondocks is being shown in different english speaking countries. So Black Americans are being given a bad image around the world. Other Nationalities watch that show and get a kick out of the black people being foolish.
Lashid: You said it right there. Regardless of differences, no body who claims to care about Black folks DO NOT WANT TO SHOW UNITY to the rest of the world with other Black folks....and I had enough of that shit!!!
If you are Pro-Black, or atleast give a shit about Black people worldwide, YOU BETTER think before you speak, and you better put some solutions into action.
If you can't do that, then don't waste our fuckin' time!!!
I actually thought about owning this throwing African people under the bus on DVD but after watching you expose the brutally honest truth about this show (sans the Tyler Perry references because Perry is real life Bi-Sexual for real) i am so glad i never became a real fan of this show because i finally figured it out recently that Digital Cable and Digital Satellite overall is really one of the slave massa plantations for African people only today that pay for it aka paying the bill every month.
@4LOSTSOULSONLY: You know, if Perry was truly gay or Bi, don't ya think he would've came out by now???
Like I said, Spike, Aaron and the other cats, as much as I like some of their work, need to shut the fuck up!!!!
This criticsim of Tyler is beating a dead horse to death bullshit!!!
Therefore, until I hear or read solutions that deal with creating INDEPENDENT studios, production companies, distribution firms and so forth, I suggest people shut teh fuck up and handle their own business.
..I remember him hatin' a lil', when he was on Oprah, and all of the women were screaming over Shemar (he was like, "AW, BE QUIET!", but I don't think he meant any harm)..Dude was dating Tyler, but they were too busy to have a relationship
...If Tyler was a TRUE drag queen, he would not choose to be some unattractive old granny w/ big, ugly glasses, and her titties hanging to her knees ...The gays I know wanna look FABULOUS, thus, they are gonna try to be some fabulous drag queens!
@DNotes06 Oprah had the cast of "Diary Of.." on the show, along w/ Tyler ...The women were screaming over Shemar, and Tyler was kinda hating, telling them "Aw, BE QUIET!" ..lol ..but he meant no harm ..I recall him, also, flirting w/ Oprah on the show, but she was giving this look like "negro, please!" lol ..He was dating Tyra, as mentioned, but it said that their schedules were just too busy to keep their relationship
Spike went at Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino, Matty Rich, and all the "hood flicks" that came out in the 90's. In your criticism of The Boondocks, I think maybe you are falling victim to the same thing that you accuse those that criticize Tyler's movies of doing , you know missing the message because you are distracted by the things you don't like.
@Uniteusall Yes, I knew someone would criticize me for criticizing McGruder, saying that I am contradicting myself, and I realize what I'm doing, but in this case, I'll go there in being critical...Initially, I was one who was defending McGruder, when he was being criticized for using the N-word too much in the cartoon...
The roasting of Tyler Perry was the most memorable part of "Pause", there was a larger message about what people are willing to do for fame. I have seen every Tyler Perry flick and Aaron made the same criticisms of his movies that I have. I own every collection of the Boondocks comic strip, it took a while for me to warm up to the cartoon, because it wasn't focused on Huey. I know people who only read the strip after the cartoon came out and they don't like it. They say it's "too political".
Since the beginning I've said how the Boondocks does not allow itself to be taken seriously! Especially not by real black intellectuals such as you and me. It takes more than Huey saying a few words here and there to make this into a revolutionary show. Most blacks laugh and like the Boondocks for the minstrel show that it is, not for the message, plain and simple. In the meanwhile, the white owners of CN are laughing along...
@Lashid4u And here's something else: Putting itself under the label of a "satire" shouldn't allow for a double standard in it behaving as a borderline minstrel show at times. McGruder criticizes BET but he doesn't even realize how much of a hypocrite he is (or does he?). I mean, I or anyone can watch the show for some cheap laughs, but it pains me to see just how little political commentary my friends take from it - proof of its imbalance in being an effective and truly insightful satire.
@aedr04 I know EXACTLY what you're saying! Those I know who love this show are the blacks, like, at my school who try to shut me up, when I'm trying to spread awareness! ..You know, the loud-ass ones who "aint tryin' to hear that sh!t!" ...The same ones he criticizes in his "nigga moments" section, are the biggest fans of this show! ..and they watch it on their laptops (at my school) , crackin' up w/ whites who, now, love this show, too - they were afraid of it, at first.

@Konform2zoidberg Tyler Perry has a pretty right-wing message behind a lot of his work, and that seems intentional.

Other Nationalities watch that show and get a kick out of the black people being foolish.

they are mocking us.
anything that is promoted via mainstream, you need to question it.

4LOSTSOULSONLY 1 year ago
@4LOSTSOULSONLY: You know, if Perry was truly gay or Bi, don't ya think he would've came out by now???
Like I said, Spike, Aaron and the other cats, as much as I like some of their work, need to shut the fuck up!!!!
This criticsim of Tyler is beating a dead horse to death bullshit!!!
Therefore, until I hear or read solutions that deal with creating INDEPENDENT studios, production companies, distribution firms and so forth, I suggest people shut teh fuck up and handle their own business.

@DNotes06
..I remember him hatin' a lil', when he was on Oprah, and all of the women were screaming over Shemar (he was like, "AW, BE QUIET!", but I don't think he meant any harm)..Dude was dating Tyler, but they were too busy to have a relationship
...If Tyler was a TRUE drag queen, he would not choose to be some unattractive old granny w/ big, ugly glasses, and her titties hanging to her knees ...The gays I know wanna look FABULOUS, thus, they are gonna try to be some fabulous drag queens!
Lashid4u 1 year ago
@Lashid4u: Wait!!!!.....So Tyler is gay? Anyway, who was the guest on Oprah and what happened??
DNotes06 1 year ago

Uniteusall 1 year ago
@Uniteusall Yes, I knew someone would criticize me for criticizing McGruder, saying that I am contradicting myself, and I realize what I'm doing, but in this case, I'll go there in being critical...Initially, I was one who was defending McGruder, when he was being criticized for using the N-word too much in the cartoon...
Lashid4u 1 year ago
The roasting of Tyler Perry was the most memorable part of "Pause", there was a larger message about what people are willing to do for fame. I have seen every Tyler Perry flick and Aaron made the same criticisms of his movies that I have. I own every collection of the Boondocks comic strip, it took a while for me to warm up to the cartoon, because it wasn't focused on Huey. I know people who only read the strip after the cartoon came out and they don't like it. They say it's "too political".
Uniteusall 1 year ago
Since the beginning I've said how the Boondocks does not allow itself to be taken seriously! Especially not by real black intellectuals such as you and me. It takes more than Huey saying a few words here and there to make this into a revolutionary show. Most blacks laugh and like the Boondocks for the minstrel show that it is, not for the message, plain and simple. In the meanwhile, the white owners of CN are laughing along...

@aedr04 EXACTLY...
Lashid4u 1 year ago
@Lashid4u And here's something else: Putting itself under the label of a "satire" shouldn't allow for a double standard in it behaving as a borderline minstrel show at times. McGruder criticizes BET but he doesn't even realize how much of a hypocrite he is (or does he?). I mean, I or anyone can watch the show for some cheap laughs, but it pains me to see just how little political commentary my friends take from it - proof of its imbalance in being an effective and truly insightful satire.
aedr04 1 year ago
@aedr04 I know EXACTLY what you're saying! Those I know who love this show are the blacks, like, at my school who try to shut me up, when I'm trying to spread awareness! ..You know, the loud-ass ones who "aint tryin' to hear that sh!t!" ...The same ones he criticizes in his "nigga moments" section, are the biggest fans of this show! ..and they watch it on their laptops (at my school) , crackin' up w/ whites who, now, love this show, too - they were afraid of it, at first.
Lashid4u 1 year ago
@aedr04 That because your friend or too dumb or lazy to see the satire.

@keeperbooth How about you proofread and improve your grammar first before you make a comment like that...

@aedr04 You read it and understood it. You forgot you question mark at the end your sentence. OH NO!
