As a LGBT youth growning up in MPLS I remember how every time Paul Magers read a newstory about some LGBT event or new item, he would follow with some scary story about pedophiles and child abuse. Such balanced reporting. Paul Magers you be proud now, ha hear?

Yes; KARE has been affiliated with NBC since 1979 when the station was still known as WTCN; prior to that, they were a Metromedia owned and operated independent station, which they had been from 1971 until 1979.
WHAT THE HELL? You cut out the best par, this is the day of that huge Fridley tornado, which Magers was just going to talk about shortly after "we're tossing everything out the window right now..."
So did all Gannett Station in the 80's have the same set design? WXIA-TV 11Alive had the exact same set in the 80's and early 90's. Also did all Gannett stations have the company logo at the start of each news, because WXIA-TV did the same.
Max, the copter pilot, was cited by FAA for flying too close to buildings. The open said "Action Center of the Twin Cities" because they were in last place. Very fun to relive those memories.
Passolt was at KARE-TV (WTCN, WUSA)from 1981 to 1994, then went to Denver for two years before coming to KMSP to anchor te news. KARE-TV (WTCN-TV) was an NBC affiliate starting in 1979.
I remember that day well, living right across the river from Brooklyn Park in Coon Rapids, driving with my mom down Mississippi Blvd from the McDonalds by AR College, and seeing that black sucker winding down. I'd never seen a tornado before that! Thought it was headed towards our house! It could have, Springbrook was only 6 or 7 miles away...
I taped the tornado coverage live when it was shown on TV. I'm sure I have the tape buried in a box somewhere out in the garage. If I ever find it, I'll have to post it here!
Hi- have you had any luck finding that video? I'd love to see more than the short clip that is on another post- I lived a mile east of the the tornado path-I remember it being the most beautiful thing
Diana Pierce was (I think) the 6 and 10 anchor. The 10pm news started with a cool animated backdrop of the Twin Cities with the newscasters. Would love to see that again!

I'm so glad we have Paul Magers @ KCBS here in Los Angeles. His low keyed delivery of the news is a facet to LA.

I used to serve him his Vanilla Latte every day. He's gone now, how kind of them to let him go while he was on vacation. Typical.

This was little over a month after KARE assumed the current call letters- it happened June 11, 1986.
johnnysama 4 years ago
I remember that. The year before, it was known as WUSA, until those calls got moved to DC.
Those were the good ol' days. Back when newscasters were newscasters, and hairspray was in.
