I know alot of ppl who watched this are our fellow Orthodox brothers from the Alexandrian rite also known Coptic Orthodox church yes to them the Bzyantine rite uses a knife and spear to prepare communion this is done way before the Liturgy even begins in a service called the Proskomede I know that I personally like the Coptic traditon better and actually keeping it whole until the Fraction this would seem very weird to our Oriental Orthodox brothers
In the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the center of the bread (referred to as the 'lamb') is consecrated and becomes the Eucharist while the remainder of the loaf is blessed, cut into squares, and given to the faithful after communion to eat and soak up the remaining Eucharist that might still be in their mouth. In the Slavic tradition, warm wine is also given after communion to wash everything down.
why does he only use the center of the bread? in our coptic church we call the center the spadicon or 'lord' but it is not removed untill the entire bread becomes the body
@MLGMajorityFFA I'm fairly certain this is in an Antiochian Orthodox Church. I say that because I saw the serving priest once at the funeral of another Antiochian Orthodox priest (Fr. John Estephan), and because Antiochians are the most likely to use Arabic in their services.
@MLGMajorityFFA This is St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Basilica in Michigan. It is an Antiochian Greek Orthodox Church in communion with Constantinople and all the other Eastern Orthodox Churches it is not Coptic or Oriental Orthodox.
God is offended by receiving Him on "dirty" hands(ONLY priest can touch Him) in the Holy Eucharist!
Only accepted by Heaven form of receiving living Heart of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist of the Catholic Church is into our mouth and on our both knees!
The knife represents the spear, and its use it mentioned in the preparation, "...and a soldier pierced his side with a spear and out came blood and water..."
Greek Orthodoxy has been using tools, like knife and spoon, with communion for a long time. I've even seen an Icon made centuries ago in which the Saint on it is holding the bread knife and spoon,
Why are you using leaven When we are told that it was Pesach and thus it would be unleavened bread?! Refer to Matthew 26, 1 Corinthians 5:6-8! Leaven means sin (The leaven of the Pharisees that Messiah warned us about in Mathews Gospel chapter 16).
@MenechemShaul Matthew 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
@mumswording i don't know what branch of Eastern Orthodoxy this is, but as a Coptic deacon, I know that this is not how we prepare it. The body remains whole until the Institution Narrative, when the priest prays over the bread and wine (before the seven short litanies). The body is further separated using the priest's hands, and not using any utensils. I am surprised to see the use of a utensil to divide the body in the eastern orthodox rite.
@KingofPeace93 I realise the differences. My question was why they did what they did? The bread is very thick and the use of the knife is odd to me. Also the body is very sacred in Coptic Orthodoxy. It seemed like a lot of crumbs were falling off. Info please
Thanks for uploading this! It is a beautiful video.
It would be helpful if there were subtitles ( you could use the annotations feature) to explain what is being done and its liturgical/theological significance. This vid illustrates the painstaking work done, but without little explication, it gets a little drab for the uninitiated.

@MenechemShaul The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom focuses on the Resurrected Lord. The Lord is risen and so is the bread!

@MenechemShaul Leaven also represents Heaven in another verse.

Would you consider adding some annotations?
