  • Only the great Buddy Rich could drive a band with this much drive...he just never quits...check out the tremendous left hand throughout...unbelievable...

  • Well if you look up the recorded drumming speeds, buddy rich is faster...I don't know why it would matter though, he actually knows how to read/play music compared to barker who...can't really do shit other than make himself look stupid and show off to girls on mtv. Long live this jazz legend, I don't know why someone would trash another artist when this isn't barker's video.

  • @Jonnyferrari202 Actually, Buddy didn't read a lick of music. He had an incredible memory though. He had another drummer that could read charts play through a song once. Buddy would memorize the form, then do his thing with it.

  • Smokin' MFs...

  • What awesome tempo and playing of them all!

  • What a drive! Awesome!

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhh shit!

  • EYAHHH1!

  • That my friend's is the be a

  • Wow, awesome song, awesome arrangement and awesome job by the band!!! Thanks for putting this up!

  • Remember people, this was filmed in the late 70's or early 80's- there was also a lot of Coke going around then....just sayin'.

  • バディ・リッチ・ビッグバンドの強力音、まさにリッチでゴージャス!~神のスティックさばき~ド迫力の"ストレイト・ノウ・チェイサー" 圧倒的! #jazzm

  • @blackandtanful i don't understand a word but there's jazz at the end, so it has to be something great ;D

  • I think my computer has just exploded

  • this guy should change the drum for a machine gun

  • buddy was so hip!!! the master at play

  • I have a drum chart of this song with a tempo marking of bpm = 200! It's fun to look at, but I'll never try to play it :)

  • @Diatonic5th Where did you get a drum chart for this :O

  • Holy Moly!

  • Jesus his left hand just never stops! Truly the greatest to ever pick up the sticks.

  • this is the slow version? LOL

  • 2:50 ◕‿‿◕

  • this is actually the slow version

  • @Greatmcwhite Umm...EVERYONE know Travis Barker is the cats's meow. It's news to you, but it's not news my friend. I suggest $2.99 Swisher Sweets cigars, a couple of dames, some bourbon and $4.95 thick, juicy steaks at the Sands hotel in Vegas as you watch Buddy Rich get his a** handed to him by Barker & come. This isn't Vegas circa 1967. Real.

  • @JoeJacari youm STILL doing the trolling crap, travis barker couldnt even DREAM of comparing to buddy rich on any level. and you dont need to believe me, go ask travis yourself he will tell you that he is NOTHING compared to buddy rich. anybody who believes otherwise has a serious mental problem.

  • @JoeJacari but congrats on the glamorous life of a troll. say hi to mr rrdrums for me.

  • @JoeJacari you know it,s a shame that there has to always be this kind of bickering. with so many great drummers out there why not enjoy and learn from all of them!!!

  • @JoeJacari fuck that shit! get your head out of your ass

  • Burning, I wonder what it sounded like in the front row. I miss real musicians performing real music.

  • What a great recording as well. Superb mic'ing.

  • Pat LaBarbera and Jeff Stout were good. Lin Biviano’s powerful lead trumpet was great. But who was the another tenor sax player? Disappointingly poor solo.

  • @tacond That's Don Englert on tenor 2

  • @ebphrygian Sorry for late. Thanx.

  • No more beards - I don't want my band looking like the house of david up there...

  • And with Jeff Lynne on sax no less

  • Aint Blowin no clams here!!Sickest horn sec ever!!

  • Did BR ever toss a clam in anywhere?

  • Perhaps some quaaludes were in order.

  • der trompeter sieht aus wie eine frau LOL

  • fabulous... in every way...

  • Im playing this Tomorow, luckily not this fast and unbelievably ridiculously amazing!

  • Seriously, most excellent. Goes to show not only that Straight No Chaser is one of the most versatile jazz pieces out there, but also that Buddy Rich is totally awesome at every song he does.

  • I saw him at the New Victoria Palace London about this time as a boy, as we say around these parts f**kin blindin! top man

  • 2:33... kinda MASS-soloing....

  • Seriously...Buddy was one maniacally badass motherfucker.

  • To all you PUNK COMMENTERS: "HOW DARE YOU MAKE A FOOL OUTTA ME!!! You wanna try me??? I'll give you a right hand ta yer' fucking BRAIN IF YA WANT ONE!!! I don't need 'dis shit. I PLAY WITH BEST!!!! You got issues?! Maybe we can settle this in OTHER WAYS!!!!! I don' need dis shit. FUCK YOU!!!!"

( The preceding was a translation of his drum playing during this video).

  • @allyourmoney yep the bus tape

  • I love a slow waltz!!!

  • this is the mathiest jazz song i've ever heard.. #yesssss

  • Where can I go hear a band play like that today? Does such a band still exist? Buddy Rich was one of a kind.

    -Peter

  • @pholzer5

"Where can I go hear a band play like that today? Does such a band still exist? "

Steve Marcus kept the band going after Buddy's death, but now Steve has also died I'm not sure if it is still going. Google for 'Buddy's Buddies" too., another band of ex Buddy Rich side men with Steve Smith on drums and Dick Cully runs some sort of 'Tribute to Buddy Rich' outfit in Florida. So yes, there are Buddy Rich big bands (or influenced bands) still out there playing Buddy's charts...

  • @SAHBfan Good that bands still play these charts. But this band in this video set the gold standard. Thanks for your comment. -Peter

  • this is what I hear in my head while listening to this: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • The way it was played could have killed someone

  • @BrunaoJazzistico you havent heard the bus tapes

  • That was frickin' awesome.

  • On fuckin' fire man

  • No one could drive a band like this man. He will never be equaled.

  • there was never a more intense performer!

  • 2:45, the shout chorus fills, are the most amazing drumming i've ever seen

  • Bunch of jazzmen hopped up on speed. Love it.

  • I wish i could go back in time.i would never miss BUDDY RICH... WOW!!!!

  • Me too.

  • It works for me.

  • Those are some bitchin' side burns.

  • muito loco esses caras...

  • does any one know the name of the bass player?

  • I heard that Buddy Rich was really in lifelong confinement at a Psychiatric facility, they let him out to perform as a series of "tests"......they ended after he killed several band members with his sharpened drumsticks.....absolutely the truth

  • @ioriorioriorio Check out "the bus tape recording". You might be right.

  • @ioriorioriorio Congratulations. The pinnacle of your literary career in cyber-space. I bet your mom and dad are real proud of you.

  • who was the other tenor soloist?

  • @ZootInNH

    Don Englert

  • Circus music !

  • @elevedesfb No. REAL music. Something many people fail to appreciate.

  • You TRY playing this in a suit !!

  • @gaspo218 Hahahahahahaha...or listening to it while driving on the freeway...ka-ZOOOM!

  • @88maverick1 Actually, he thought he was god.

  • 1:41

    the best bounce roll ever

  • What is this, a funeral dirge? Absurdly slow. Please. Like a jazz version of "Dust in the Wind."

  • Anyone know who the BassMan is... He gets click!!!!!!

  • único de todos os tempos !!!

  • too bad they take it at such a slow, grave tempo

  • @zebopper lol

  • @zebopper hahahhHAHAHAH !

  • Jeff has some CHOPS!

....he can also play his horn!

  • So I seriously just made this account to troll people by bashing buddy rich on his videos. The problem is, after the video starts, I never have the heart to do it after I hear his awesome skill. :|

  • I hear it now about 20 Times it blows me away everytime!! Great!!

  • @JoeJacari But for real though. Every good video is ruined by your mentioning Travis Barker. He is a pathetic joke for a drummer with no musical style. All he can do is play loud, and loud doesn't equal good. He's just not good. At all.

  • anyone know who's the tpt player?

  • @franzcz Trumpet soloist is Jeff Stout ~

  • @MarkR1957 THANKS!

  • @franzcz lin biviano

  • @bigbreadeaterellis THNKS!!!

  • wow

  • This band is on fire, whoa!!!!

  • My college jazz band is playing this version of the song. If we can play it half as good as this, I'll be happy.

  • What sweet sweet music. The entire band is amazing, especially the first sax player.

  • I find it's very difficult to find referrals... The best method I found crawling over the net is at ez-casino(dot)com...

  • Much different from Cannonball,I love this.

  • This should be titled: BUDDY RICH at 150 mph .

  • Hah.Buddy was one of the first drummers to do the upside down solo, followed by

EW and Fire. It's nothing new.Whats amazing is that nobody can put it together like Rich did , maybe faster , heavier but ask any real drummer and they'll tell you Rich set the bar.

  • while wearing a suit and tie..........

  • 2:52 is fucking crazy

  • That was the most belligerent jazz jam I've ever heard.

  • @keyzcity Check out Time Being I and II -- it shreds this tune, believe it or not. Unreal.

  • Be bop.. I wanna dance!!!

  • @JoeJacari ,,,,I think Travis actually posted this,,,,,,,,sad.

  • @JoeJacari I can play much better than Travis Baker, just ask Marky Ramone,Chris Slade,Greg Bissonette etc. Hes a good pounder but Buddy Rich would Fuck Him up and Blow his Tatoos Off! Like a Blackhawk minigunning RagHeads!

  • wait... you're joking?

  • @JoeJacari - Travis Barker ? What big band did he ever kick ? Blink 182 looked and sounded like a bunch of fucking assholes.

  • Buddy Rich IS drumming

  • top notch.

  • Further proof that Big Band is some of the hardest sh*t to play. Every member of this band is at the top of their game.

  • The bass line is ridiculous. BR is the man!

  • This is incredible. Obvioulsy the 'bus tirade' guy knew how to inspire!

  • Lol..man if I counted the amount of times my harmon nearly feel out of my horn...those buggers just never stick xD

  • AHMAGAWD it's good old Jeff Stout! Hahaha the most amazing History of Jazz teacher ever :)

  • Buddy Rich is a "MACHINE"

  • Comment removed

  • dude i thought it was sped up

  • These guys are awesome!

  • this has happened to me way to many times, catch myself watching buddy rich till early into the morning when i should be sleeping.

  • AMAZING!!! I agree, in his prime, who could match Buddy for sheer power and drive? And who did this incredible arrangement? This is the highest level of jazz.

  • Hello,

is there a full version of this show available somewhere?

  • Man, I love this kind of tenor playing! The trumpets, too. Bass player's scary, and obviously Buddy swung like mad. I can't believe this is damn near FORTY years ago. I wonder how many of these cats were able to keep making a decent living and how many are hanging in there to this day.

The corporate music business and the poor craplappers who think they know what music is are part of a big, sad devolutionary downswing. Bummer! But at least we've had some great stuff in my lifetime. Thanks!

  • The Tenors are good... but definitely no Steve Marcus

  • Love the splash cymbal at 3:31.

  • this is just straight up incredible.

  • FUCK YEAH! Buddy Rich n Co tackling Monk! And honestly, to ALL THE HATERS etc, u can go fuck urselves with the sharpest/pointiest broken drumsticks! You can count with 1 hand the new blood that can attempt to touch guys like Buddy, Gadd, and Purdie with a 1000 ft pole!

  • @dodeka Amen!!!

  • great clips brian 740.I recorded this programme at the time but only on reels. Any chance of In a mellow tone , Chelsea Bridge & Superstar.

    Thanks for sharing

  • Great song to start a party.

  • you tell em rayjr62 !!!!

  • Great Buddy!!! Full energy...

  • @kimani69870 Imporvised, all the way ~

  • Fucking awesome, just awesome!!!!

  • hell yes! way to work it!

  • They don't make it like that anymore....pity!

  • I would give a LOT of money to play alongside a drummer as good as Buddy Rich....

  • I saw Buddy and the Band play a gig in Toledo in 1972 and he was the Best Damm Drummer I've ever seen live in my life. He worked his Ass off on Drums and all of the Band sidemen had to do the same or they were gone. Superb Video.

  • I saw BR twice in the 70's and with Pat on sax. Even by today's standards the arrangements and musicianship is outstanding and I'm a rocker. Most of the cats in the band were fresh out of Berklee. BR's sense of time is nothing short of amazing.

  • Nice how Jeff Stout's mute fell out and he just kept on playing. I though it was part of the act.

  • Killer!

  • Buddy Rich is sick with the sticks!

  • Great.

  • epic drum solo at the end

  • omg! ...hell !!!!!

  • thanks for posting.

  • what??? are you eyeballing me Bitch?

  • THIS IS THE BOMB!!!!!!!

  • I swear to God they are dragging...HAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • Dont mind them..

theyre just jealous bec. our buddy is still no. 1 in the world..

    check out the google..

    all genres.. no1.. buddy!

  • Simply stated: Buddy Rich was a genius. Savant, perhaps. "People person", not always. But his playing, and the bands that accompanied him, were top-notch! He expected the best, and if he didn't get the best, the offenders heard about it! For better or worse, the music was his life, and the quality showed!

  • This should be titled "Buddy at 150 mph". Imagine doing a set like this, no wonder why most musicians couldn't do it, physically, nite after nite. Gotta be tough !!

  • Correct me if Im wrong... but that would be Jon LaBarbera... not Pat on Tenor.

  • @renwickdave Uhm I think you are wrong. John was a trumpet player that arranged the song?

  • Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer to ever pick up the sticks. It's that simple. And he always had great musicians in his band.

  • @yourtubesteak Have you ever heard the audio clip of him tearing his band a new one? He expected pure PERFECTION...thats what made him and his musicians great. NOt many people are like that anymore. Its sad.

  • the punk of jazz.

  • @ZeRo46240 and yess that was a joke. i'm just stating that this is fast as fuckk!

  • No one drove a big band like Buddy Rich. No one drove a big band crazy like Buddy Rich. Remember all the charts he knew in his head and they were all right on. This was a prime example of textbook drumming for a group. And Buddy probably had no peer on brushes, either. Sure, he was a prick--but he was a perfectionist; the best. I don't think ANYONE came out his bands a worse player; believe me.

  • Can you say swing?

    Brilliant!

  • Spare the ignorant language, Mark, and the family insults...he WAS the South-bound end of a North-bound horse to Trumpet players, in particular...the ONLY Trumpet player I ever heard him compliment was Bob Doll...not even Tom Harrell was spared his wrath....and my Dad NEVER had to wap me up side de haid...yours must have.

  • fuck the haters... buddys charts had a very meaningful impact on the jazz world considering hes a world ledgen ..hope off his dick and go practice

  • Joseph D. Gobel took us to see Mr. Rich play... and he died shortly thereafter. Well, The Master of Percussion lives on :)

  • Right on, rayjr62...Buddy was a prick but credit where credit is DUE - SMOKIN!!! Hey, is that Alan Gauvin on Bari.?

  • @hueman17 To say that Buddy was a prick is only a partial truth. He was a prick SOMETIMES.

Just like every human being ever born. I'm a prick sometimes, so are you. So is your mother, your sister, your grandpa - everyone.

Buddy was also a VERY nice person at times, too.

Tell me why you goofballs only bring up the shit about him screaming at HIS band for fucking up?

He was no more a prick than your dad was when he yelled at you and slapped you in the fucking head when you were a kid ~

  • omg this is soooo fast

  • burnin...all of them....buncha bad-ass cats...

  • 1:31

  • I THANK JOHNNY CARSON, HAVINRICH ON

  • He was an amazing MUSICIAN and I could not disagree more with the people that say he played just to get to the drum solo section of the tune!!!

  • i was fortunate enough to see buddy rich from 66 onward whenever they toured the uk quite simply he always was ultimate value for money ALWAYS !!!! totaly wonderful how lucky you were over there in usa and how plain silly some of your comments we will admire and remeber you for ever in the uk thank you mr rich

  • That tempo is MEAN!

  • Definitely taking classes from 2 of those trumpet players this semester :)

  • where???

  • berklee I presume?
