I think Mariah Carey deserves a lot of credit for this role. She was VERY good in this movie. Top notch performance. EVERYONE in this movie was sensational. Monique was dead on in her Oscar acceptance speech. It IS about the performance and not the politics. The performances in this movie were very well delivered. I was very impressed by everyone, especially Mariah Carey. No makeup and a low gravely voice. Great work by everyone all the way around.
@atillathechuStop being a fucking bitch. I would dare you to say that in the ghetto . You would get snatched so quickly. Haters will be haters but black people accomplished more than any other race. where did she go? did she come back with something? i saw this movie already but i forgot why she left. she was talkin about a poem, what did she come back with?
@clipse375 Mad? Come on now, it's YouTube boo. Aha, she can look like a ugly ass cunt. I don't care. She's a great actress and a beautiful person inside and out no matter what her appearance is. You should have more respect over that bro.
@AshleyNia Exactly, so relax little girl. I'm just stating the obvious but it seemed to hit a little teeny nerve inside you that caused you to be so insulted haha. It's not even an insult when she literally looks identical to a gorilla. So again, relax. It's YouTube boo.
@clipse375 Aha, your stating the obvious? The only thing that's obvious here is that your selfish and immature. Get a clue. That "gorilla" is Gabourey Sidibe. You can insult and say anything you feel like about her, but the true fact is no matter how much you do that, til this day she'll be high above you and your little comments too boo. So, get that through your head and realize it.
@clipse375 And that "Gorilla" has more fame, money, fans and talent, than your immature self. Just enjoy the damn clip, and if yor here just to insult a woman, please leave.
@CMcervantes95 I didn't come to this clip to insult anyone. It's after I saw the clip that I realized how much she resembles a gorilla. Besides, she probably wouldn't be so "famous" and have so much "money" if she didn't look like that. So chill out and grow some back-bone you oversensitive primadonna.
I didn't like what this movie was about but my favorite scene is when Precious Slap the shit out that girl for calling her fat and when she finally fought her mama back
Quite dark, though. Like along the movie you start thinking WTF, what else can happen to this poor girl... and then, you realize that more sh!t is thrown at her.
The book is good also but more "graphic". But, the scenes in the movie where she "transports" herself away from the trauma are a lot better in the movie than in the book.
Though, I like the characters in the book better...
"Its this bitches fault" is she that dumb and selfish that she would think its a babies fault...ugh...and there are people like her and this situation.
@sparta814 She won Best Supporting Actress! Totally deserved it too. But i'm actually super impressed with Mariah Carey's performance, as well as Gabby Sidebe's (on top of Monique's)
Mary is lucky that she's not on the Steve Wilkos show. Her fatass would be standing at attention RIGHT NOW. An episode on his show involving how a woman let 7 men sexually abuse her daughter was way worse, epsecially when she came on his show trying to get custody back.
"It is this bitch's fault!" " since you got your degree and you know every fucking thing.....who was gonna love me??? Who was gonna make me feel good late at night??" LMAOOOOOOOO!!!! she's funny as hell!!
If i was siting there i would be like how did this happen.? i amaized at people who do work like this every day. After seeing this movie and reading the novel.
See, this is why I couldn't been in the social work field, because if I was Ms. Weiss, i would came across that room so fast, and knocked Mary OUT! I get too emotionally involved with shit like this.
@SoopremeBeing Me too. I had thought one time about becoming a social worker because of my compassion for people, but my compassion for people and child victims would have made me unable to deal with people like that mother. I couldn't do it!
@LyricJaz I'm guessing that she wanted her skin appear lighter than it actually is. So among a plethora of other issues she has, she also doesn't feel comfortable in her skin. It follows that old negative believe that the lighter your skin, the more beautiful. I myself am a black woman, and have seen other black women (some I know very well) do exactly what she did. It's sad, really. :C
2009 was a great Oscar year for actors and actresses playing villainous and antagonistic roles. Both Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique were dynamite playing "Hanz Landa" and "Mary" respectively
It blows me away how Mo'Nique, who had shown no signs of being able to deliver a performance with genuine substance, delivered one of the most powerful, haunting, and ferocious performances in the history of cinema. This scene shows the ignorance and selfish, destructive force that Mary had. Way to go Mo'Nique, this is a performance that will never, ever be forgotten.
"Who was gon love me? Hmm? Since you got cho degree and you know every fuckin thing. Who was gon love me? Who, who was gon touch me and make me feel good late at night?"
@SantiagoOlaisola i'm tired of fat women taking pride. like, its cool, you can succeed if you are not fat, everyone is okay with that and nobody is saying otherwise. when it comes down to it, everyone likes something more skinny (generally speaking). not to take away from everything she did. Mo'Nique was amazing in this film and she deserves every bit of praise for her wonderful performance. to make this about a skinny vs big woman thing misses the point entirely. "performance not the politics."
@7mandoblu I knowwww I couldn't stand Mo'Nique after this movie! it took me a while to seperate her character fro who she really is! I could not even watch the Parkers for almost 2 months cause I kept thinking about her performance
Man this shit was hard for me to watch. Still haven't seen it and refuse to, but I did want to see this scene for some reason. I actually use to work with special needs and at-risk youth. Did it for 8yrs, man this shit was hard. I've met kids like this and their parents and this shit...man.
Of all the fucked-up shit she says, the fact that she gave her DAUGHTER a bottle, and her BOYFRIEND her breast milk, is the thing that is just bizarre levels of red-flag to me.
Monique is amazing. I had never seen her in anything before and I cannot stand Mariah Carey. But I will tell you...this is one of the best performances in screen history. Not once is Mary apologetic. I appreciate the honesty in this performance. Beautiful.
The line right before this is kind of hilarious: Ms. Weiss asks Mary about abuse in her house (meaning physical and sexual abuse), to which she responds "No, there's never any drugs in this house, Precious knows that if I catch her with drugs I will beat her ass -"
Its not funny, but what is funny as hell, is when Mo'nique(Mary) said "Who else was going to love me ....huh? since you got your degree and you know every Fu@king thing, who was going to love me?"
This scene was the key to the Oscar. Without it, Mary was just a monster. This scene helped us understand that she was sick and needed help, that everyone has a story. And Mariah Carey was also exceptional!

@dreamomega When watching the movie for the first time, I asked, "I thought Mariah Carey was supposed to be in this?" Then my friend said, "She is. See the social worker? Thats Mariah Carey." I just could'nt believe it. When he said, "More like Mariah Scarey", I just lost it. LOL. I still don't see Mariah Carey in this movie. She really became Mrs. Wise. I'm glad she don't really look like that. Wow. What a transformation. Monique, Gabbey, Mariah, pure excellence.
who`s gonna touch me?? who´s gonna make me feel good............. i´ll say u who u bitch!!!!!!! yourself.... the rest of youe live u must to be mother because someday u choosed to be preagnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck u damn!!!!!
From 4:30 to the end of the clip is some of the best acting I've seen in a film in the last 10 years. All three of em. Monique obviously gets the lions share and deserves every bit of the Oscar, but Mariah gives a wonderful understated performance. The look she gives Precious at 5:30 and Gabby's tears at 6:13. Lee Daniels really got them all to pour their souls out....Just top notch. Excellent
Mo'Nique's acting in this scene was obviously phenomenal, BUT I was also happily surprised by Mariah Carey's performance. It was so understated and real. I didn't even recognize her. Amazing casting, amazing movie
@FaerieRose23 It was so good. I work with social workers at my job, and when social workers have to talk to people about REALLY heavy stuff (like child sexual abuse), they have to really keep their composure, come off as professional, and seem unfazed by what they're discussing, and yet, you can still REALLY sense their discomfort in their voice and the way they sit/stand. Mariah NAILED that part of the role
I remember i saw this film on theatres and kids with their parents would see this film when they were there watching the film they kept laughing at this scene i was so shocked what got me so mad that the kids were laughing so my bestie through a popcorn at them ... ;P
Her mother is a fucking selfish hoe and I'm so happy that this film ends the way it does. Even when she's confessing to what her boyfriend did to Precious, she makes out she's the victim and her boy is to blame, none of it's from her. Mariah Carey is just gorgeous and I love how she's sitting there like bitch, I can see right through you.
5:40 gets me ever time; I can "empathize" with Precious' character. Mo'nique deserved this award! This is the best acting I have seen in years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is not a funny movie by any means but i always laugh when she says "he told me to shut my fat ass up" and what did you do? " i shut my fat ass up" lol
@ckersh17 lol I do the same way!!this movie isnt a comedy but some parts had my ass lmfao like when she stole that chicken and that lady said "get that big bitch" i die,but on a serious note..Mary is a sick individual its so heartbreaking that this part of the movie had me crying and i dont cry hardly ever.
that's mariah carey? i'd still plow.

Mariah Carey's reaction to her ignorance, in the movie of course, was exceptional and so real. This movie is so raw!!!!!!!

I found this scene so profound because I have a mother pretty close to this. She just conceals it better than Mary did.
