  • There is a small vid of them in the wild taken in the Congo by a chimp reasearcher. It is only a few seconds long but it clearly shows a HUGE male chimp! The pics taken show that unlike other chimps, they make nests like Gorrilas. The locals say they come down from the hills and have tipped over cars, attacked and carried off kids and dogs too. They are called "Billi chimps". Also, the US military has released footage they took of them while doing counter terrorism activities in the Congo.

They were separated, and within six weeks two chimpanzees, Kermit and Bobby, were dead. On November 16, 2006 the 7 remaining chimpanzees of Kermit's Community were transferred to Chimp Haven. Research is very restricted due to the size and temperment of the Chimps. They were captured from the Billi area in Congo

They can cut their hands and feet off and sell them for more money than most people over there make in years of hard work. Locking them up is becoming the only way to even keep them alive. Sad.

Amazed by the fact that this member of a seemingly different species of Chimpanzee appears to show signs of intelligence and what this would mean for science and our understanding of ourselves. Devastated by the fact that more wasn't done to protect him. We could have learned so much from him and perhaps he from us. I feel a strong kinship with these creatures.

    Chimps didn't evolve into humans, we have a common ancestor. Think of it like this, you and your cousin share a common grandparent(or great uncle/aunt) so therefore you are related to them distantly. The Bonobo is a lot more like us than these apes.

  • @fateofnate I feel like an geek saying this, but you're right, because humans have a mix of 2 different types of muscles (forgot what they're called), one is pure power and the other is more for endurance, because we are "designed" to track and hunt prey over long distances, whereas chimps muscles are almost completely that very powerful type, so even the strongest human would get ripped apart by the weakest chimp. sorry, I read this in a Scientific American once and it blew my mind lol

    Humans have three types of muscle; skeletal, smooth and cardiac. There are two subtypes of skeletal muscle (the ones you were referring to); slow twitch (good for endurance) and fast twitch. Fast twitch muscle has three major kinds, some of which contract not only faster, but also with greater force than slow twitch muscle. Fast twitch, however, is not good for endurance.

    But yes, chimps are deceptively strong :-)

    appearance more closely resembling humans than that of the Common Chimpanzee (see: bipedal Bonobos). The Bonobo also has highly individuated facial features, as humans do, so that one individual may look significantly different from another, a characteristic adapted for visual facial recognition in social interaction.
