  • Not sure what you're asking. About foetuses, right?

So without giving a biology lesson that I am unqualified to provide, I will say life begins when the baby's brain has it's first thought. Obviously the body had to grow before hand, but that's nothing more than live flesh.

  • if you really want to know search:The Greatest Story Ever Told - Part 1 of 3

  • well it depends on your definition of life. Technically we are alive as a single cell when our mother is concived. then we wait 16 to 40 years for sperm to enter the next stage of life. but that is a biological definition from life. As for when what I label Soul, don't know. Science is still tring to figure that out, all I know is without a brain there is no soul.

  • @TheOther4815 The answer is found in the bible:- Proverbs 26, 4 and 5.

  • Life begins at 32. I know this, because your brain is fully developed at that point. CATScans, performed by only the most scientifically literate CATS, have shown that the human brain continues to develop until your late twenties or early thirties. This is also the best time to adopt a CATS.

  • Atheism does not say anything about our origins. Your question is therefore flawed. My personal answer would simply be "I do not know". Keep in mind that just because science does not have the answers to every possible question yet, does not mean that any god did it, let alone your specific god.

  • What do you mean by life? A human life? Life on the planet earth?

  • life begans when i wrote the letter "L" in life. the proof is i cant write life without starting with the letter "L".

with that said i would like to state your question is to wide open to get one answer. it would be a better question if you defined life.

  • Life began billions of years ago. it's in the fossil record.

  • Life begins when you are conscious and aware of your surroundings. I know this because if I had died before I was conscious I would have never known it. The proof is simple; can you remember anything before you were born? Your question so simple a child could answer it. Try using logic & your questions will get better.

  • When does life in general begin? When did my life begin? When did the first human life begin? When did the life of the universe begin?

General questions will be questioned. Be specific.

  • How about this? How do YOU know that "God" created life, the world and everything.

Btw, there's these things called amino acids (aka non-life, formed by natural element) that compose DNA, this DNA forms miniscule life forms like bacteria, which eventually evolve into everything that is alive. And this all started when the Universe exploded 6.4 billion years ago which cannot be proven yet, but there is some evidence to support that.

  • These are tiresome questions. When you say "How do you Know", after people comment back, it becomes childish. I'm calling Poe. You offer nothing in the way of furthering a conversation.

  • Your question is almost meaningless. If a cell in my hand divides into two, isn't that the beginning of life, since it's the creation of more living matter?

The most honest answer to "When does life begin" would likely be "Abiogenesis".

  • I have no clue when life begins. I wouldn't suppose it is at the zygote stage or at the moment of intimacy. At 8 months it's a baby in my opinion. Somewhere in between there should be a stage when pain needs to be a deciding factor for sure. Other than that, I think it is more an issue of why would you stop a developing life from going to birth. It is kind of like not giving them a chance. I don't know how women get over an abortion after a certain stage. At two weeks I don't see an issue.

  • Origin of life or moment a foetus becomes a life? You gotta be more specific, man!

  • Brain waves start being produced. That is just my definition. You do understand some atheists are anti abortion don't you? You understand atheism is a disbelief and god and that is really all it is and has nothing to do with someone's personality don't you?

  • Completely depends on your definition of 'life'.

  • There is no good explanation yet and there is no need to make one up.

Btw, that's the problem with Theists, they fill in God in every gap there is. But this strategy is damned to fail as the history of science shows.

  • Not even Christians can answer that question. and it will never be universally answered as a whole.. Because each individual has a different definition for "life"... the definition has variations even among Christians..All "Life" is, is a human created word just like "god" (some primitive African languages don't even have the word life). Real question is what does "life" mean to you ?

  • This is a stupid question, life begins when you are born, why? because you are being born...

    Simple as that...

  • @PinataFreaks Well, thats not entirely correct. atleast not for me. Life begins when you, in your mothers womb have working loungs, heart and brain, and would be able to survive without being in there. Thats what i would call the beginning of "life".

  • @Oratory1989 Touché...

  • Question is too ambiguous to provide a reasonable answer to. Define, concretely and concisely, what you mean by "life." Phrased as it is, the question verges on committing several rhetorical fallacies.

  • Life starts when the child is viable. (can survive outside the mother) why? well because before this point it is just cells that are not a person yet.

  • I have to agree with most of the scientific answers below. At some point after abiogenesis started, for this planet, the most likely start of life.

I expect you thought your question was about babies, without any qualifiers, you have these answers.

  • "Life" began a few billion years ago, and that's backed up by the fossil record as well as the predictions made by evolution, genetics, and all sorts of other things. Of course, you mean when does someone become a person. That happens in the later stages of pregnancy, not in the early stages. The evidence is because in the early stages you are just a mindless clump of flesh with no consciousness what so ever. That, like your body, must develop. If you think otherwise, then sperm counts as human.

  • I think life begins when the fetus is viable. Before then I'd say it is a part of its mother since it cannot survive on its own.

  • Life begins at abiogenesis.

I know that life exists on this planet, but not on others.

Evidence? Repeatable observations of this planet and others.

  • Define life first... not even biologists can agree on what life is, much less when it explicitly begins. Much less some 'Christian' who believes in archaic writings and mythical sky daddies.

But more importantly, it has nothing to do with atheists... or theists. See what kind of ignorance theism breeds? This set of four questions stands as a bold reminder of that! Not one of these questions was coherent or reasoned. "Question for theists, what color is best, blue or red?" See, dumb question.

  • literally life begins when the sperm enters the egg but it's life in the way most humans would not value in the same way we do not value plant life. the fetus does not even feel pain until the 8th week. even at this point it has no way of feeling emotions rather only sensations.

  • What's your point? Religion is so bi-polar about human life: "You're a miserable sinner who deserves to die" but "God loves you and has a purpose for you." If he exists, God is the biggest mass murderer in history. Amos and Hosea speak of "pregnant women being ripped open."

  • Why do people ask atheists such questions? Do they think a lack of belief gives perfect knowledge of all subjects? I don't know when life starts. Don't claim to, don't care.

  • The jury isn't in on this question

  • The question is totally irrelevant & unimportant except to deluded religious fanatics. Christians could care less about any other lifeform on earth except the one that they stupidly imagine is shared with a embellished Superstitious & Mythologic Deity. Man has created Gods in his own image & used and discounted every other lifeform for his own convenience.

  • @doubtingED BRAVO!! Someone answering with brains and honesty !!!

  • @doubtingED How do you know?

  • @TheOther4815 - My statements are self-evident to any intelligent, educated & rational person. You are the empirical evidence of empathetic delusion & religious fantasy for all of us to see and study. Thank you for setting & reinforcing the standard for which we measure religious stupidity.

  • @TheOther4815 I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I?

    Childish remark

  • Now, before you say that I am a cold hearted sociopath, let me tell you that I am a retired nurse practitioner who has delivered and assisted with the births of hundreds of babies. Life is precious to me as it is to anyone. As an atheist I recognize that this is my only life and that I must cherish every moment of it. We don't get do-overs.

  • Human life, indeed all life begins with a developed brain and nervous system. Before the neural pathways are established it is simply a proto-human. In the case of ectopic pregnancies it is never going to be human. It's merely a blob of undeveloped cells. That is not a person, but more of a tumor. Women with this condition are given cancer medication (Methotrexate) to resolve it.

  • @Christheatheist1 Mostly I agree with what you wrote. However, I think I'd use a different vocabulary to describe it. "Life" is just a process of replication and obviously is started the moment you have a fertilized cell. Even a bacteria is life. The real problem with the question is that we should not care about "life", but rather assign rights at a point where it becomes reasonable to think the rudimentary mechanisms for consciousness are in place.

  • @Gnomefro - I agree completely. We must also consider for the purpose of this occasion, the source of the question. This person does not ask questions hoping to benefit from the answer. He has had these questions answered repeatedly. It is simply a series of jabs at atheists meant to provoke. If you analyze his facial expressions in these videos you can clearly see a certain smugness characteristic of an indoctrinated mind.

  • @Christheatheist1 That point can, of course, not be earlier than neurogenesis, like you mention. Before that point there is no individual with interests, who can suffer or anything else, and the mother's interests should be all we care about. This limit also happens to be where the right to self determined abortions are in most civilized countries. IMO, this is the most conservative date imaginable that could be supported by data.

  • @Gnomefro Point taken. :)

  • @Gnomefro Whitney is a 23 year old fundamentalist christian who displays every odious characteristic of the modern christian: Angry, petulant, and filled with self righteous smugness. His arrogance is matched only by his ignorance. He repeatedly jabs at atheists, thinking that he is imparting real zingers, when in actuality he is only repeating the same, juvenile exercise in self humiliation. Still, perhaps one day he will actually listen to our answers instead of his usual nonsense.

  • This is a question that shouldn't just be aimed at atheists, since not all atheists believe the samething...I think that's a problem here, since the 4 videos you've made (thus far) seem to put off this air that atheists all agree on the same stuff, when they don't.

A real question I would like you to answer is "what is the purpose for all these questions?"

  • Upon fertilization. I'm an atheist. Is that the wrong answer for my people? Honestly, the question seems to be missing the point. We, humans, justify the taking of human lives all the time.

  • when you respond to, and let video responses, you other videos I'll consider your new questions. All you are doing is asking typical questions and not replying as you screen the video responses grow up Whitney. You disappeared for a while. Why come back just to videos that are worse than what you did before?

  • Even easier than the last 3.

It's not up to me to say.

  • @robtbo cop out answer, just say you don't know.

  • @atheistbob27 That I didn't know was implied. I also implied anyone who claims to know really doesn't have the say-so, either :P
