Hey man. I'm pretty sure I met you at Sam Ash here in Vegas about a week ago. I was checking out the black beauty and asked you about the catalina club jazz. I'm actually thinking about buying this kit, when I saw this I remember you talking about the kick port. Thanks for the preview, I may just go and pick it up soon.
@CrlsDan92 hey whats up! and yes... I do remember you.. I think you actually work at Sam Ash too right? haha.. right on... yeah, the kickport really helps this little 18" bass drum sound deep and punchy. add an emad and kickport and you'll be sounding like a 22 with no problem unless you want the jazz sound. I gig all over town with this kit and I love how small and light it is... takes up no space on the stage. watch my other covers to hear it in action. see you around. -Roger
@ROGERPEREZ83 Yeah, well I use to work there last year. Yeah, I may get the kit that Greenbrier is offering, it has no drilled tom mount. I have seen you're covers, very impressive. Nice reference kit too. But yeah, watching you made it certain. I may just put on emperors and a power stroke 3 or a power stroke pro. I like me a stanton moore type of funk sound.
@ROGERPEREZ83 you know they say there entree level man , thats crazy i play guitar , drums all that and there like 650 ? i would never pay over 750 for any gear .
@TheHighPlainRoller the Tama Silverstars are really nice! especially since they have all birch shells! definitely a more modern sound out of the smaller kit size.. Just throw an EMAD on the kick batter and either a kick port or an EQ3 on the kick reso side and it will be a cannon!
@TheHighPlainRoller no it wasn't hard at all.. what was hard was going back to the 24 because the rack tom was so hi on top of the 24. I love this 18" kick drum.. so small compact, punchy and i can put my rack tom however I want.. nice and low and it takes up like no space.
Not a big fan of using that head for that snare (not a big fan of those heads to start out with), but it's got a decent tone for what you're playing. It is a jazz kit though, and that's just what it's made for-- a more smooth, stylistic kind of tone. I was thinking of buying this, where'd you get it for under 500?
@BillPlaysEverything I have clear emperors on the toms now and I find that I get a better rock sound out the them. I'll argue it to the death that I know that its designed for "jazz" but using if for rock is perfectly fine and the sound with an EMAD and Kickport is damn close to a rock sound. My live vids are more than enough proof of this. I bought the kit @ guitar center during labor day. had I known about it, I would have bought the sonor bop kit from green brier music on ebay for 399.
@mpnewman1 not really sure what you are talking about.... other than the crappy audio quality of my camera, these drums sound great for rock music. don't believe me? watch my other videos where I used these drums live. I have an EMAD and a kickport on the bass drum and it sounds so punchy and defined. I've gotten plenty of comments on my drums sound especially for being so small. "Jazz Kit" is just a label to identify the shell sizes... not what music should and has to be played on it.
@f4gg0try Well this is sold only as a shell kit here in the U.S. as for the level... yes this is an entry level kit. if you are judging level on price then you should look else where.. Now if you you are judging on the different levels of kits that Gretsch has to offer, then this is at the bottom of the barrel with only the Black Hawk series being about 50 dollars cheaper. This is why it is considered and "entry level kit"
i have the same drum kit and it sound asactly as your.... the tom sounds like i'ts cracked or something same with the tom 1.. Is that normal?? please let me know asap. ty
@PiratedBox I actually got a gibraltar rim that holds the tom from 4 out of the 5 lugs now.. it helped a bunch! as for the tom... look up "Bob Gatzen tom tuninig" and that should help you out a bunch on tuning.. my drums actually sound really good.. I just used a really crappy camera... I'll be putting up all new vids with my zoom camera.. watch my city and colour drum cover... thats using the new tom holder and zoom camera. hope this helps friend!
@teasdalea1 yup no sweat.. I found it originally on cymbal fusion . com and had it priced matched by musicians friend since they beat it by 10 % and ship for free... came out to like 115 or so when it was all said and done.. its rock solid and I've had 4 cymbals and my 12" tom on it when I had my 2 rack toms set up on it. hope you enjoy it if you get it.
@ROGERPEREZ83 I'm getting this kit for Christmas and like you I'm going to play rock on it. However, I'm not sure what to do for pedals. I don't whether to buy a single or a double pedal. What would you recommend?
@teasdalea1 for me, I have a double pedal... but I honestly only ever use my single. its all a matter of preference... if you can afford the double, I would say go for it and you can use it as a single. Then when you get the itch, attach the other half and play double. Hope this helps.
@ROGERPEREZ83 I got this kit for Christmas, and your review really helped me. On your heads do they have a little wear on them? As I have only had this kit a couple of days and there seems to be a little wear on the rack tom and the snare. Overall, I love it, thanks so much.
@teasdalea1 Sweet! You should post a video of the kit eh? As for the wear on the heads... if you are using the stock Gretsch heads that came with the kit, then yes.. I noticed wear and the white coating started to come off after about a week of playing... but it is expected with provided heads. Watch my short drum mic test with Remo Emperor clear over the stock heads and have a listen.. just some reverb and panning done.. no crazy effects. I think they sound excellent..

@mpnewman1 dude, your comment instantly shows me that you don't know nearly as much about drums and drumming as you think you do.

500 euro for the shellset, +hardware and rides = easily 800+
Thats not exactly "entry level".....

@ROGERPEREZ83 what is the name for the rack/mounting system you have for the cymbals. I know it's made by Gibraltar.
teasdalea1 2 months ago
@teasdalea1 its called the gibraltar stealth side mounting system GSSMS runs about 160 with no cymbal arms.
