"this is awesome!" typed my seven year old daughter who still has a giant green balloon in her bedroom that she took home with her after seeing the Flaming Lips at the Puyallup Fair in September.
This is the most magnificent thing I have ever seen. It makes sense that it goes with the most magnificent song I've ever heard, which is ironic in a sense. You'd expect the most incredible thing out there to be overly complicated, intricate, or even improbable. But, no. It's simple, emotional, and true.
And that is why The Flaming Lips are going to go down as one of the greatest bands to ever exist.
Just saw them last night! Such an amazing show. Even if you're down in the dumps, you can't help but leaving their show feeling better about everything your life.
@captdrastic Yep. I was there. That was my first time seeing them live. I'll do my best to make sure i see them whenever they come back. At times I felt incredible, and other times I was on the verge of tears. Only had that happen at one other concert, and that was The Swell Season at The Paramount in November of 09.
My girlfriend and I saw them at the Ryman this past May, she isn't much of a Lips fan but she freakin loves this song and she loved the show, i consider myself a lucky guy to share a song and experience like this with the one i love
I watched this song with my five year old niece. Her first comment "I want to go to that party" 20 seconds later "this is making me feel like I want to cry". I agree 100% with that.
1:56 is such a magical moment. I was front row right on the fence yesterday at Summerfest in Milwaukee and I can tell you I have never felt as much ecstasy and happiness and overall joy with such a bang as I did during that moment of the song with the lights, confetti, smoke, random people hugging me and just having a great time.
But other than that The Flaming Lips play all their music on the Studio Albums, bringing it live has allways been a different story, but with the addition of Kliph Scurlock as part of the Band as allowed Stephen to play guitar and synth live, and have live drums. they are allways creating the music with various technology, i think its great noone else does that, acoustic and electric, digital and analog equipment. and they never sample other peoples work.
its not like he's incapable of playing guitar. he plays it on some of the newer tracks on embryonic. The lips used to use VCR tapes as a click track along to their images on the screen, they used sequencers in the Soft Bulletin era. I think they have recently gone more digital recently though. Embryonic was recorded with one mic jams, stetched out and the eq fiddled on pro tools, and the Fridmann gave it a bit more boost in the studio. thats why its sounds like it does
As much as I love this band, it really upsets me to see Wayne pretending to play guitar live. As a fellow musician, to see someone 'lip syncing' their instrument is just about as low as Justin Bieber. But that's the dilemma, why would such an artistic band do something like that? I realize they use backing tracks in their live shows, and I know Wayne might not be that good at guitar, but just practice! Their songs aren't THAT hard. It's a shame is all I'm saying.
@quadruplewide He's said before that he just likes the feeling of a guitar in his hands while he sings; I don't think he actually intends for people to believe that he's really playing
@jackvillarreal I believed he was playing the guitar...I suspected something on a Letterman video..when he stopped and it sounded exactly the same, without him. Great song, but this fact IS mildly problematic to me..he's not attempting to make people think he's NOT playing...he has a cable, and he's bothering to hold it.
@ThePoorhillbilly relax buddy...it's not the end of the world, even if he isn't playing anything. Too much coffee? I like the song, OK? I don't care that much, and neither should you. Samples aren't THAT much better. It's basically a tape deck with the functions "Play" "Stop" on his guitar. I don't lose any sleep over it, and hadn't given it a second though after I wrote it. Looks like you had your world rocked, though. Didn't mean to, so just go pick up your guitar synth and practice.
@dannon2010 what so you think he's untalented becuase he plays a synth? not a guitar? you are ridiculous. he's a genius musician. tapes and synths are a little bit more complex than that. first he has to create the music or record it, you have to set it up and know what to do and then he's wired it into a body of a guitar. its some pretty advanced stuff, more complex than simply strumming a few chords. I don't have a guitar synth. so sorry i can't. why don't you pick it up and see how hard it is
@ThePoorhillbilly stop being so testy...I never said he was NOT talented. I LIKE his music. I own a guitar and a guitar synth trigger too...and playing guitar is significantly more difficult than using a synth trigger. Particularly the chords to "Realize"...they are a pain in the ass. I was like, "how the fuck does he do it?!"..and blown away. Not so blown away now about how he does it...still love the song. Been a fan for 25 years. Saw them in mid 80's w Sonic Youth. Str8 guitar better.
@dannon2010 yeah but he plays the guitar in the studio. all the Lips studio stuff is them playing, but live its a challenge especially if you are playing multiple instruments on the records like Drozd was. God its only music, chord variations are nothing, they don't create the melody of the song, the music, and sonically, its only a guitar, Ronald Jones used like 7 Boss Se50s. does that make him a lesser guitar player? synths and pedals are part of the larger sound pallete of rock,
@ThePoorhillbilly Chord variations are EVERYTHING. That's how you write songs. I imagine he wrote this song on guitar originally, and what he's triggering are the strings or the orchestration involved in the original recording. Personally, to me, that's all foo-foo. I think perhaps I am a bit of a purist, and that's all fine and dandy. I'd rather not hear the foo foo at the expense him playing the guitar live. examples are Hendrix Sonic Youth for live sound w/out foo foo. Still Love FLPS
@dannon2010 changing a chord to a sus2 or a diminished, its still just the root chord. it just changes the layout of the other chords, the melodies between the other chords, its good but it doesn't do alot its more a songwriting gimmick, most of the the well known songs use the same simple chord progressions, they have been for years, check out fight test, its the same as cat stevens. not that there is anything wrong , it doesn't matter, its the vehicle of the song, then theres lyrics too
@dannon2010 I like to see bands experiment with different technology, like you don't what the hell is happening half the time in Lips songs, Thats what sets them apart. they arn't the norm, they incorporate massive sound palletes, their guitar licks are sometimes so fuzzy like in the W.A.N.D, and they they can go to more higher end 12 string playing within consequetive albums. They are still guitar band! thing with Sonic Youth are they are one trick pony, they are noobs, lips are 4 real
@ThePoorhillbilly Really? You think the Sonics are a one trick pony, even though they were one of the Lips main influences in the early years? Not to mention their influence over Pavement, Nirvana, Yo La Tengo, and countless other bands? And then you have the fact that Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore have invented entire tuning blocks when writing songs. Stylistically they may sound the same to you, but in '99 they had a major reinvention like the Lips did after Ronald quit.
@revolutionroom thats bullshit. Sonic Yotuh were never an influence on Pavement or the Flaming Lips. Sonic Youth are a NY band. they are folliwng on from a tradition of the VU. theres nothing special about them. they are of their location and of their era. the end. Pavement are from Stockton California, they fucking listened to Big Black, You am I, Beyonce Knowles. who knows!
@ThePoorhillbilly Dude, do your fucking homework. Watch "Fearless Freaks" and listen to disc 2 of "Slanted and Enchanted: Lux and Redux" and you will see exactly what I mean. Not to mention the cover of "Death Valley '69" on "A Collection of Songs Representing an Enthusiasm for Recording...By Amateurs" from 1987. Say what you will, but if a band covers a song it implies that the song makes them feel something important, thus they have been influenced. Obviously can't change yr mind re: SY.
@revolutionroom So the Flaming Lips have covered heaps of songs by people, Kylie Minogue, Nirvana, Neil Young. who cares. should they automatically cite in every interview that they were influenced directly by this this and this. why should they.? guitars makes noise. they make distortion. this isnt a new idea. lou reed invented a tuning, sonic youth copied it. a cover is just a song in a language that people understand. they don't have to kiss the feet of everybody. by playing their music.
@ThePoorhillbilly Also, to my knowledge from research, the Sonics never copied the Ostrich tuning. Ever. Not even when covering the Velvets as Lou barely used the tuning himself. The Ostrich got stolen and so Lou, instead of modifying another guitar to make the timbre of tuning work, abandoned it. Thurston Moore had a modded Les Paul copy with bass strings in a tuning he made for "Eric's trip." It got stolen in '99 and his techs built a new one to the original's specs. So basically, TM > Lou.
@ThePoorhillbilly A proper English speaker who is unable to type in italics does, however. Sorry if that doesn't make me a "true fan" by your opinion, intrawebz Gawd. And your idea of influence seems terribly flawed. It's not worship - Sonic Youth's early identity revolved around the idea of killing your idols. All it means is that that band makes you appreciate music, and maybe want to create it. I would say that Sonic Youth did that for the Lips, but I'm biased - they're my favorite band.
@revolutionroom See this is exactly where Sonic Youth Differ from the Flaming Lips. Sonic Youth wroshipped these punk aesthetics, nihilistic attitudes. like death of idols, death of pop. but if you follow these militantly, they lose their effect, so in eccense they have become just has boring as everything else out there. they arn't radical and they arn't serious. they are a joke punk band that just sound a whole lot of younger bands if not worse. Smith Westerns are better than them, Waves, OCs
@revolutionroom ''Sonic Youth have many alternative tunings, including some that are either ostrich or partially ostrich tuned'' from wikipedia for ostrich guitar. You can't compare the greatest band of all time, the Flaming Lips, to overdue Dinosaurs like Sonic Youth. you just can't. I Won't let this happen. has beens can't compete with genius.
@ThePoorhillbilly They had to rebuild their sound and it completely changed their direction, like Ronald's absence caused the Lips to move away from an alternative rock guitar band to what hey are today. I personally like the old Lips better, but I can't discount what they are creating now. They are releasing songs in gummy fetuses. Who else does that? For anyone else the backing tracks would be an issue, but the Lips make it work.
I had a dream the other night that Wayne died, and when I woke up, I cried harder than I ever have. I've lost friends, and family members, but nobody could change lives the way he does. I hope he never dies. He'll probably just go missing some day.
So much pure joy. In the crowd, in the band, and I'm sure in people watching where ever they are now. It's amazing how a few sounds and some great lyrics can strike the hearts of so many people.
Two best live bands in the world today-The Flaming Lips & Pearl Jam. One spits out as much bad assery as the other. If you ain't seen 'em both yet... DO THAT SHIT.
at one point in this video you see a couple hugging. it is so simple and beautiful to see them rejoycing to the music. i played this song to a close friend and they started crying. it's a powerful song
@captainvaritek because it's is about realizing that nothing really matters in life, except the relationships we make with people and the impact we have on their lives.
@captainvaritek because it's is about realizing that nothing really matters in life, except the relationships we make with people and the impact we have on their lives.
@captainvaritek this song is about realizing that nothing really matters in life, except the relationships we make with people and the impact we have on their lives.
Find me a single musician kinder, more intelligent, more creative, more charming, more funny, more real, and overall, more magical than Wayne Coyne, and you've found me a clone of Wayne Coyne.
Just saw them Friday night in St. Augustine. It was really cool to show my mom this video and then be able to pull a fistfull of orange and yellow confetti from my pocket
This band is just proof that X-Factor, American Idol etc is all a pile of bullshit! They'd never have accepted, for example, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and certainly not Wayne Coyne! He can't sing conventionally, but it doesn't matter! It's all there in how he does it-it's in the music, the lyrics, the passion, the love. But, still, he'd probably be shown on American Idol as one of the auditions that was so bad it was funny... look at him there, though. Vocal talent doesn't replace genius.
@mariano26788 I understand, I like the way Wayne Coyne sings, I think he has a good voice, but what I meant was he's not technically brilliant, there's no way he'd even get through on one of those television talent shows. There's not enough integrity to those shows, because they know no one will listen carefully enough to see the person's real meaning, just whether they can belt out You Raise Me Up or not!
They are the one band in the world that can promote love and peace, and opening your mind to new possibilities while still staying true to yourself. And they do this without sounding like obnoxious hippies.
@itsjustanillusion Great! See you there, then! I'll be the one crying /jumping / gawking/ /gasping / looking silly / waving / singing / treading on other people's feet /
I also have to say, it is very good to see that there are all positive comments on this video. Though i cant see how someone could see this and feel like being negative. Life is fleeting....
I agree with Petertheimpaler (love the name). Seeing this song in a live setting with a crowd of people joyously dancing and singing along while confetti flies is the only way to truly understand it. In a way, those beautiful moments are what this song is all about. I feel so lucky to have been able to get the full flaming lips experience a good number of times. Seeing them live is nothing short of a celebration of life
@deadk133 I'm with you there. I saw them a few years ago. Best show ever and not just for the music. They begin the show talking about how they want to celebrate life and then they spend two hours doing only that. It's so. much. fun. I would see them again in a second.
This is the best posted version of this wonderful song by this magical band...yes, the Letterman performance is great, but you really need the beautiful madness of the concert performance to fully capture their spirit, and you'd be hard-pressed to find more smiling faces at a show by anyone else...
I saw them live in August 09... and it was the greatest concert I've ever been too. Hands down. My friends and I got selected to go backstage and dress up in Yeti costumes and dance onstage with the band. I danced with Wayne. Then we hung out with him for an hour backstage afterwards. The greatest thing ever.
The part about the sun going down being an illusion from the world spinning round brings tears to my eyes, it's really bizarre. This song represents the true power of music and art.
This is a wonderful majestic way to start my journey of appreciating their music. I saw them by live back in '07.

at one point in this video you see a couple hugging. it is so simple and beautiful to see them rejoycing to the music. i played this song to a close friend and they started crying. it's a powerful song

Find me a single musician kinder, more intelligent, more creative, more charming, more funny, more real, and overall, more magical than Wayne Coyne, and you've found me a clone of Wayne Coyne.
southparkboy619 1 year ago 2
@southparkboy619 wayne coyne > wayne coyne? i'd say that's flawed logic, but then again, you know, it is wayne coyne. and he is a magician.

@ElvisChrist6 i think Wayne Coyne whis to singing good... but anyway he haves to much love to give, so i don't care :)
mariano26788 9 months ago
@mariano26788 I understand, I like the way Wayne Coyne sings, I think he has a good voice, but what I meant was he's not technically brilliant, there's no way he'd even get through on one of those television talent shows. There's not enough integrity to those shows, because they know no one will listen carefully enough to see the person's real meaning, just whether they can belt out You Raise Me Up or not!

i en vez de decir todos tus adioses,
q te das cuenta que la vida se va rápido,
q es dificil hacer a las cosas buenas durar,
q te das cuenta q el sol nunca se pone,
es sólo una ilusión causada por el mundo al girar......^_^

I agree with Petertheimpaler (love the name). Seeing this song in a live setting with a crowd of people joyously dancing and singing along while confetti flies is the only way to truly understand it. In a way, those beautiful moments are what this song is all about. I feel so lucky to have been able to get the full flaming lips experience a good number of times. Seeing them live is nothing short of a celebration of life
deadk133 1 year ago 3
@deadk133 I'm with you there. I saw them a few years ago. Best show ever and not just for the music. They begin the show talking about how they want to celebrate life and then they spend two hours doing only that. It's so. much. fun. I would see them again in a second.
tperich 1 year ago
This is the best posted version of this wonderful song by this magical band...yes, the Letterman performance is great, but you really need the beautiful madness of the concert performance to fully capture their spirit, and you'd be hard-pressed to find more smiling faces at a show by anyone else...

Beautiful song. Prophetic words.
