You must understand what it was like to be a 14 year old black kid when this came out. We were caught betweet two worlds. We realized something was missing and didn't quite know what it was, or exactly what we needed to be whole in American society. James Brown was like medicine to our souls. It was Haldol, prozac and ativan to our internal rage. It was a intensive psycotherepy. It was a political manifesto that energized us. The song wasnt all that good.

He was begining to crossover quite a bit. 'I Got The Feeling' went to # 6. After 'Say It Loud' he had a huge backlash from the pop radio stations who, almost overnight, stopped playing his songs in any decent capacity. The only reason he is 2nd to Elvis with charted pop hits is because his records sold so much to blacks that even without mainstream airplay they went pretty high on the charts, because the charts consisted of a combination of sales and airplay.

Great for black folks but it destroyed his white pop radio airplay and even though he was on national TV shows it seems all the time like Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Dinah Shore, Joey Bishop, The Tonight Show, etc, for a few years after that he lost all pop momentum and never really crossed over. But that was the essence of the man, he went against the grain and that's one reason he was such a musical visionary.

Just out of interest, I was talking to another YouTuber about the long-term cost to his crossover appeal of this song, and I asked if maybe in response is why he rushed back into the studio and cut, "America Is My Home".

And as much as many people think it cost him a lot of crossover appeal, I don't think they are taking into account the change in his music going on at this time. I don't think "white folks" who bought "It's A Man's World", and "Papa's Bag" were going to be thrilled by "There It Is", and "Payback" etc, although I underastand that "Good Foot" was his last Top 20 hit in the USA prior to "Living In America."

@PaulDA2000 LOL! You got that right! James Brown did not care one iota what white folks thought anyway, even though he loved all people. He loved his own people more and wanted them to start having some pride in who they were! He encouraged us to go on to college and have some respect for ourselves. He came from poverty and dsepair and he made it! As for affecting his career? JB was rich by that time. Why do black people always have to worry about their careers and crossing over? Whites don't!

I love him to death for it, sure it slowed his momentum as far as white society was concerned but make no mistake; absolutely at all, my race needed this man with this powerful song more than mere words could ever say!!! I'll never forget how his powerful words helped to give us a better, more positive image of ourselves in white America. At time when the only thing we had was a man who did wonderful things with a peanut...that's all the schools taught you about us!!!
