If you watch the video from 0:40 seconds, and then watch the slo-motion replay starting at 1:04 - you can clearly see Miller turn, raise his elbow and try to strike Lucic in the chest with his best effort of a 'body check'. Miller forgetting about the intrinsic value of 'momentum' was his spectacular undoing. Priceless.

I would never accuse him of being over-rated. That said, however, it is my opinion that he "exaggerated" and inflamed the discussion. Looch is tough. Miller showed confidence against he B's. Still, I think he is ultimately the one creating this discussion.
The problem wasn't with the hit itself. In fact the penalty was NOT for interference. The hit itself would be considered "finishing a check," and is perfectly fun. When the goalie comes out of the crease like that he is just another skater. (However, Lucic does extend his arms during the hit. Regardess of the rules, I think that's pretty lame to do that to a goalie.) The problem was the distance travelled before the hit. You can't do that to ANY player. The call was charging.
A two minute penalty for charging was fine for this hit. From what I heard about this hit before looking it up, and listening to these obviously homer announcers, you would have thought Lucic murdered Miller. It really wasn't that bad. It's Miller's teammates who are the real bitches. How do you not drop Lucic on his ass? A little shoving doesn't do much. I would have cold cocked Lucic under the chin after that. You CANNOT allow your goalie to get hit like that, even if it had been clean.

Clean hit. The rule is only for "unnecessary contact " on a goalie. Lucic doesn't have to give up on that puck until Miller gets it, which is .1 seconds before the hit. Miller got right in Lucic's path and played the puck while Lucic was going full speed. Contact is then unavoidable and Lucic did not stride into it he was gliding the last 5 feet.
I'm a sabres fan, but if you don't want to be hit as a goalie, stay in your trapezoid that was created to protect you. I remember when goalies had to stay in the crease or they were free to be hit just like anyone else on the ice.

i don't agree with the hit, but if you notice in slow motion it does look like lucic tried to slow down towards the end. the hit was inevitable, but many goalies have been hit like that before. the way their team reacts is really important. had timmy been hit like that i know we would've been just as pissed as miller, but its happened before and i think the sabres should've retalitated more aggressively on the ice. miller is a talented goalie, and he deserved to be backed up by his team better.

i agree that lucic is not going to be suspended, but i still contend that he should be. how shanahan decided that there was no intent to hit miller on that play is beyond me. more than a little hypocritical if you ask me given how he has ruled on some of these other suspensions, most of which i feel were way too heavy-handed. oh well. i'm sure lucic got a strong warning to never get in that situation again and i bet he feels lucky today.

Clean hit. The rule is only for "unnecessary contact " on a goalie. Lucic doesn't have to give up on that puck until Miller gets it, which is .1 seconds before the hit. Miller got right in Lucic's path and played the puck while Lucic was going full speed. Contact is then unavoidable and Lucic did not stride into it he was gliding the last 5 feet.

Look at the replay, at that exact time, you clearly see that Lucic understands he's not gonna get that puck, so he backs off, and try to put his arms in front of him... and Miller his, at that exact time, totally raising his arm and going forward to check Lucic!
The thing is Lucic is bigger, and used to check a lot... So Miller is the one who falls after the hit.

i don't agree with the hit, but if you notice in slow motion it does look like lucic tried to slow down towards the end. the hit was inevitable, but many goalies have been hit like that before. the way their team reacts is really important. had timmy been hit like that i know we would've been just as pissed as miller, but its happened before and i think the sabres should've retalitated more aggressively on the ice. miller is a talented goalie, and he deserved to be backed up by his team better.

tuukka came out and hit pacioretti (sp?) a few games ago and tuukka got no penalty, so if a goalie can come out and hit a player, the player should be able to hit the goalie if the goalies is playing the puck 20 ft outside the crease.
