@spongefan11 your idea for a booby trap would not work, for if the crossbow was left while tensed, the tension would decrease, powering the projectile less. And if it were to be left 'untensed' then the crossbow would take half a minute to ready itself, so by the time it was primed then the person who triggered the trap would have escaped. Good idea though, it could work if the maker made the priming process quicker. Maybe try using a gearing system. That might increase the speed of the priming.

In the start of the movie, the ball-carrier device was a lot further in front than its final position after firing. It leads me to believe something got in the way and stopped it, thus it lost a lot of power not being able to use the full swing of the crossbow arms.
