I was in New York and I didn't see anything except for hearing it on the car radio & then turning on the TV to see what was happening. It was a shock to me. For days afterwards people just looked into the sky for planes.
At first I thought you couldn't see it either. But if you look closely, you will notice that the lighter area is actually the side of the building (unless I'm looking at it wrong myself) :)

Both were one image before the edges had been artfully shaved/sheared for final presentation.
Sculpting is the obscuring method used to thwart pattern recognition in the WTC smoke.
