@spartan13569 A lot of people get confused by this and I need to do a short video about it. The Daz Studio serial number can be found in your account at Daz. It is absolutely free to sign up and also allows you to download a bunch of free 3d models and ask questions in the forums. They have email newsletters which you can opt in or out of in your account profile. I personally like getting them because each week they have a freebie and very often vouchers or discounts for 3d models.
@ItsFlew709 I have to agree LOL! Blender gives me a head ache but it does have a lot more features than Daz Studio. Studio is nice though, as it is simple enough for someone unfamiliar with 3d to ease into it. It's what got me started.
@95bradders95 Yea. I just bought a real nice Cobra attack Helicopter for $1.99 haha. However, if you are going to do a lot of animation I recommend looking at Carrara (also from Daz3d) as it is has a lot more animation abilities and renders faster than Daz Studio.
DS is free though, and much of the work you do in Studio can be imported into Carrara should you decide to pick it up later.
Daz Studio isn't currently well suited for building new 3d models from scratch but more for rendering models made in a separate program. I use Wings3d (free) for most of my modeling. Blender is also free and it is very powerful but is a bit difficult to learn. Hexagon from Daz3d is a good modeling program, very affordable and most find it much easier to learn than Blender.
While I was editing, watching the clips over and over, I started playing Mysetry Science Theater 3000. I was making myself laugh so thought I would have fun with the comments hehe. Just self deprecating humor :)
Interesting. I bet it's possible to do anaglyph style 3D animations as well. One movie of frames Right_001, etc...And another movie of rendered frames Left_001...But the next part is only if it's possible to script Gimp to load the files and save the correct combo for each pairing of left and right frames. (Unless you're ridiculously patient enough to do it all manually.) I wonder if anyone tried yet? Making the vid from the resulting frame sequence is the easy part, even Virtualdub can do that.
Your right. The part I can't find a free part for is something to do a batch run of the levels on the frames. Debugmode's free "Wax" program will composite 2 video layers using screen but I don't think it will strip out the red, blue or green of the video first. I have done a few anaglyph clips using Photoshop to batch process the image series then put them together with Virtualdub.
Not really with Daz Studio. It is more made for rendering premade models. You can export any animation data as a BVH motion capture that might be usable in games though. I have only just started learning about making games ( a few days ago ) so I'm not sure about the .egg format but I suspect the free 3d modeling and animation program Blender can do it.
I think aniMate Lite comes free with D|S 3 but I could be wrong. The aniMate Plus, or whatever it is called, is a paid for plugin only... Though I believe you can download a 15 or 30 day trial from the GoFigure (the plugin maker) website.
LOL! I appreciate the honesty about dishonesty haha.
I totally understand the apprehension about signing up for accounts and such. It took me almost a year before I was finally convinced Daz Studio was safe to download... Just sounded like it was too good to be true.
I am glad I finally did though. They give away free 3d models every week and you have to have an account to access them. Of course there are torrents but why when you can get them free from the source :)
No need to search pirate sites, Daz gives the serial number for free :) You need to set up a free account at Daz3d then the serial number will appear in your account profile under Available Serial Numbers.
Doh! Sorry I took so long to reply. Installing 3d content is hard to explain but fairly easy to do once you have done it a few times. I will try to make a tutorial about that soon but, for now, it is probably best to ask on the Daz3d forums. Everyone there is super helpful and friendly.
Yep. Daz Studio has a few animation abilities. Some of them are really cool and easy like the aniMate and Puppeteer plugins that come with the latest free version of Daz Studio. I think you can see some videos about them on Daz3d's YouTube page. Making anaglyph video is a little harder because you have to composite the left and right renders in a video editor. I haven't found a free way to do that yet but intend to make a tutorial as soon as I do.
Yea, I have a lot of fun with it. Maybe I am just old but it simply amazes me what you can do with some of the free software nowadays. I wanted to do this stuff decades ago but the software didn't exist and the hardware needed would bankrupt some countries LOL!
There is a "Create Account" link in the upper right hand corner of the daz site. It doesn't cost anything to register so don't confuse creating a free account with their Platinum Club. The Platinum Club is a paid membership which is a pretty good deal if you end up liking 3d and buying a lot of content or software but I suggest you get just get the free stuff till you get your feet wet.
There are 2 versions now. Daz Studio and Daz Studio Advanced. The basic version is free and the advanced one is for sale. I used the free version for the tutorial.
The ones I used in the tutorial came pre-installed with Daz Studio version 2.x?. I believe the free version 3 also comes with models but they maybe different than the ones I used.
Daz is pretty generous and gives away a weekly models. They also have a bunch of free bundles. I a link in the video description.
The whole Daz Studio/Poser world is chock full of free 3d models, textures and plugins. Also, users often make freebies then post them in the forums as a good way to learn.
Sorry for the late reply. Yea the window layout of Gimp is what turns a lot of people off about it. Actually Photoshop is set up a lot in the same way but it puts everything in another, all consuming window which makes it less confusing.
To answer your question... Open an image, on the top of the image window click "Dialogs" then select "Layers" from the drop down menu. Or you can hit CTL+L
Both are free, although Daz just released an advanced version of Daz Studio which isn't free. I know this will cause some confusion so I will try to put together a video about it soon.
You can still download Daz Studio 3 basic for free which has all the features (and more) as the version I used in the tutorial.
Thanks for the info on the "Colors" option missing. Mine still has it but they may have changed the UI since I last updated it.
I am not sure why your first image is disappearing. Is it maybe opening the second image in a new window directly on top of the first? Is the first window still showing in the system tray or are you using a Mac?
One thing you can try is, in the window with your first image, go to File-> Open as Layers (CTL+ALT+O) and it should appear.
It definitely does not open the program again, it just opens the window with the 2nd image again. So I have a toolbar on the left, one on the right, and two in the center. the problem is that when I click on the Left window the right panel says left, but then when I click on the right panel, the left one disappears in that toolbar.
does that make sense? if not, I will post a video response.
I solved the first 2 problems, but I still have the third one.
I open Gimp and open Left, and it works. then I try to open another and Left dissappears. so...plz help me out.
Another thing. when I open Gimp there is no option for Colors. go to Image, then Adjustments, then Levels, and it does the same thing. Just in case anyone needed help with that.
Anyway, if someone could reply to my comment with an answer ASAP i would greatly appreciate it.
ya, me again, um, I downloaded the software and everything but I had some questions.
1: How do you move the right cam away from the left cam? Unlike the video, my camera does not have the arrows pointing left and right.
2: how do you stop the picture from saving so grainy. I could not save as BTM or whatever, only the DAZ thing, and when I pulled them up in Gimp is was so grainy.
3: I named it "Left" in Gimp and then opened up the other picture and "Left" dissappeared! How do I stop it?
You may need to have the translate tool activated to get the arrows to appear. In the classic D|S UI it is the button that looks like + with arrows on each end at the top of the screen.
I think the grainy images and lack of BMP might be from saving the scene rather then the render. Try rendering the scene again (Render button or CTL+R) then go to File->Save Last Render... Then select BMP from the drop down menu.
I was thinking about doing another tutorial on how to do Anaglyph animations but haven't found an easy way to colorize the layers with free software. I am testing out a few different methods and will be sure to post once I find a good solution :)
As for glasses, I am looking at a few plastic pairs on Amazon. I will order some this week and see how well they are made. Until now I have been just using an ancient pair from a cereal box LOL!
Yep. Checked again a few weeks ago and both Daz Studio and Gimp are still free. D|S requires a activation number after install which you can find in your account profile after registering at Daz3d (also free).
I wish I could. I think the clear glass ones are called "Lenticular 3d". Those require the images be projected through polarized filters. The concept is pretty simple but looks like it takes a special monitor with built in filters and some 3d drivers for your video card.
The D|S serial number can be found in your account profile. Visit the Daz website, log in then click "Account profile" in the upper right corner. On the next page it should have a link "Available Serial Codes". Click that and the D|S code should be in there. If you have any problems with it post in the Daz Forums, They are nice people and quick to help.
I will try to do a tutorial on D|S install and also where to get more CG freebies soon :)
The Daz3d site? Click the "3d software" tab at the top of the page, mouse over Daz Studio on the list to the left of the page. A drop down list should appear then click "Download Daz Studio".
After installing it you may need to set up an account with Daz3d. They will send you the serial number so you can register Daz Studio for free. The reason they do this is they hope you get hooked on 3d and may decide to buy premade 3d models later on :)
Sorta... It would be a long process though. You would probably have to convert the video to, and render your D|S animation to image series then composite each frame. Undoubtedly easier to do it with video editing software. Wax from DebugMode is a free video effects program that can composite video.
nice.... good tutorial helped me out, I loved the annotations, but i think they were a bit hard on yourself when u sed "I thought the gimp was our host" lol. Great tutorial tho.
Daz|Studio is mainly for animating and rendering premade 3d models. For making my own 3d models I use Wings3d (free) and Hexagon (Currently about $150 from Daz 3d). Hexagon does a lot more than Wings3d but I like the ease of Wings so I still the bulk of my modeling with it.
The serial number is available in your Daz3d account profile. Registration is free and gets you access to weekly free 3d models too :)
Nothing else is required. I think by default they send a weekly newsletter with Daz promotions but I think you can opt out.
I forgot to mention it earlier because once you get the serial number for the first install of D|S it automatically applies when you install upgrades or new releases so you pretty much only do it once.
I need to make a video explaining the motivation for these programs remaining free. Mostly I think it is just that the user community likes doing it and helping others so you find a lot of free 3d models and Gimp plugins.
Daz3d is a small, for-profit company. I believe their motivation is to give you the starting software and some great 3d models for free in the hopes you will enjoy it and later buy other models and plugins.
The red and blue in your example are opposite of what most anaglyph glasses require (Red on the left and Blue on the right). So you may need to turn your glasses around to see the image correctly.
When I first messed with this, a few years back, I kept finding images that were the way I explained (always remembered R for Red).
Now that I have uploaded this I see most anaglyphs using red for the left LOL! Good fo you to point it out and I recommend people do the opposite of what I said in the video :)
CTL-L on a PC opens the layers palette. I assume CMD-L does on a Mac. You can also go to "Dialogs -> Create A New Dock -> Layers, Channels and Paths" from the menu above your image.
Gimps layout takes a bit of getting used to if your coming from a different image editor.

where do i find my daz 3d code?
Manny1080i 3 years ago
Sorry for the delayed reply...

No. Both programs are full versions.

Your right.
When I first messed with this, a few years back, I kept finding images that were the way I explained (always remembered R for Red).
Now that I have uploaded this I see most anaglyphs using red for the left LOL! Good fo you to point it out and I recommend people do the opposite of what I said in the video :)

Yep :) Everyone loves a little spice in their 3d LOL!
I meant to add a annotation about that in the video but forgot. Thanks for pointing it out.

Not sure why two people have posted that. Both pieces of software are still available absolutely free.
I have never heard of anyone ever being charged for either one.
