I wish Damon had started racing cars earlier. We've might have seen him debut in the mid 80's in F1. It would have been interesting to see him going head to head with Mansell.
@The LloydF1: many thanks for this; loved it. I've never seen Damon race, but I did see his incomparable dad (plus Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart) in saloon car races at Snetterton (five cars abreast going into the Esses when there's only room for two. Four minis and a Lotus Cortina = the best example of driving skill I've ever seen. GH, JS and JC were racing in 'em and nobody crashed. Yes, I am that old...
@PaulCastle001 my dad raced against graham hill in a couple of formula ford races and said he was not only the best racing driver he had seen but the nicest person he had ever met and he was a true gentleman. ive met jackie stewart at silverston he was just walking by himself i went up to him and a nice 20 min long conversation. i only wish i was alive back then when racing was so challanging and the drivers were true gentleman .
Damon could push himself very hard, but for some reason he just couldn't keep up that spirit consistent enough to beat Michael Schumacher in similar conditions.
i don't understand why williams aren't as good as they were in the 90s. Patrick head is a genuis car designer and when you think about how many championship winning cars they've made!
@beforsey Because as though Patrick Head is no longer responsible for the design of the car, Sam Michael is.Ever since Williams employed him their development has gone down the pan
Damon Hill was an excellent driver and really had allot to live up to in regards to his father- this must have added so much pressure. I would not rate him in the league of Schumacher, Senna or Alonso but he most definitely holds his own in F1. In the 90's he was my favorite driver- one of his best drives was in the Arrows (Hungary)- didnt win due to gearbox but what a race -especially as so many had written him off- also the 1-2 with Jordan was not bad either!!!-
Personally I consider Hill a more consistent driver than Montoya ever was in F1. I'm still disappointed he managed to screw up a well deserved constructors' title for McLaren in 2005.
Hill deserved his moment no doubt but i felt 1996 was a poor year. Shumacher had just gone to ferrari who at that point had an inferior car, mclaren were on the way back up, and his only challenger was a rookie in jaques villineuve.
After 122 races Hill is in the top 10 for wins and win percentages, top 10 in poles, top 12 for fastest laps and was a contender for WDC three years in a row, winning 1 (and probably 97 if he'd stayed). And he was the driver who most seemed to get under Schumacher's skin. ;) Not too shabby; most drivers who've driven cars as good as his have done far less, but he's often under rated.
lol if you're refering to 94, no he didn't. Schumacher has only ever admitted 1 mistake and that was 97.
Hill made a mistake in 94 in that ill-judged move on michael, I don't know what he was thinking considering how it was obvious Schumacher's car was damaged.
Thats funny because Im of the mind that it was Schumacher making the ill judged move, arrogantly thinking he could block Hill, despite the car clearly having a fault that would have at the very least cost him several positions.
Its one of the reasons why I will never be able to decide if Schumacher had more talent than he did arrogance, or vice versa.
He should have held his hands up in 94 and gracefully lost the race and championship. Instead he cheated at Hills expense and got away with it.
i dont think shumacher did that 94 incident on purpose. u see his reaction just after he did it, he thought he lost the title to begin with, and then was of course was relieved to have been told damon had retired.
Goron333: Hill couldn't have known how badly Schumacher's car was damaged, he only saw a good opportunity to overtake him, then Schumacher made that move... We can't know if it was on purpose or not but I think it was, looking at what else he's done during his career.
He was 4th in quali, 0.058 seconds of pole at Jerez in 1997 in the Arrows car when the first 3 got exactly the same time. If that was Schumacher or Senna they would have been talking about that performance for ever. Shows how underated he was.
..also another thing that grates on me is, I magine if Shumacher had done the Hungary 97 performance?..And another thing, how everyone harps on about Damon being in the best car, notice no one says that about Hamilton...
Aww nice one for uploading this. I had the video of this years ago and was actually looking for it yesterday, but still can't find it. I loved Damon Hill back in the day, dunno why!
Damon was a real gentleman into the racing tracks .
